Humans live on earth like little parasites: they suck nature dry, with fatal consequences. The Indian historian Dipesh Chakrabarty therefore calls for a radical rethinking, away from the human perspective. Yves Bossart talks to him about bacteria, biodiversity and excavators.
Topics in this episode:
00:00 What is the human being for you?
05:14 You call for a "planetary turn" in thinking, a new image of man. What does that look like?
28:24 Air conditioners save lives in India, but on the other hand they continue to heat up the global temperature. How do you resolve the contradiction between the ecological and social question?
49:38 The historian Yuval Harari predicts that we will have descendants in the form of cyber beings. What do you think of this?

The Indian historian Dipesh Chakrabarty prefers to speak of the "habitability of the earth" rather than of "sustainability". He pleads for a decentering of man in nature and for thinking in inhuman time frames. After all, in the "Anthropocene," humans have long since become the determining force of the planet: Every day, about 150 species become extinct - animals, plants and microorganisms. Floods, forest fires and droughts threaten the habitat not only of humans. The consequences are migration, wars, resource shortages.
Chakrabarty argues that climate change has opened a new era in human history, which he calls the "planetary age." His claim: We need to think about humans and nature in a whole new way if we are to have a future as a species. He talks to Yves Bossart about how to do that.

«Sternstunde Philosophie» cultivates an in-depth and critical exchange of ideas and gets to the bottom of the burning questions of our time.
«Sternstunde Philosophie» bridges the gap between current socio-political issues and the fundamental questions of philosophy: Who is responsible for what, what is human freedom, what determines the meaning of our lives? Guests are personalities from science, culture, politics and business - voices that stimulate thought and reflect and classify our current events.

"Our current behaviors will not help us survive..."

I mean at least we lived in a sophisticated culture with more than 8 billion people. it's more than every species in world and maybe in universe reached and if we humans go because of self destruction, we will go proud. In million years if hopefully the earth recovered from nuclear and climate change illness maybe after dino and humans a new species will dominate the earth, maybe scorches who can survive nuclear crisis or some animals or something else. anyway, even without humans there must be another live because without live without soul nobody exists in reality. so many questions. How relative is life, how meanful for one soul, what is point of existence. at the end it doesnt matter, it is just so wonderful, exciting and at same time so grotesk and dreadful that one type mammal could conquer and civilize this world just with pure intelligence (and the new ability to sweat in around 15000BC).

Pretty much this. Though, must there be life for things to exist? Other planets exist now and will continue to do so when or if we are no longer around. Sure, there is the philosophical angle of reality without an observer but from an objective point of view nothing changes.

Minute 11, Europe's achievements are substantial... well it looks to me that Europe's achievements are so substantial, that he is partly European, speaking English, making a living in the USA, a splinter of European culture, and that he speaks freely in a democratic way without fearing a State or a religion in his own country. It looks to me that many Indians are deeply resentful of colonialism while at the same time they forget to recognize that, they are part of colonialism and that their very thought and acts are a result of colonialism. Without colonialism, there would not be an Indian State nowadays with hundreds of languages in the same area but all communicating in English, a language that is 60% Latin and French-Normand, and 35% Anglo-Germanic, the rest being Dutch, Old Norse and Welsh. The thing about colonialism that many individuals from colonized countries forget, is, that they are the product of colonialism, they are colonialists too. If Dr. Dipesh Chakrabarty hates colonialism, then he should abandon English as a method of communication, start lecturing in an Indian language, Hindi or Bengali, start wearing traditional clothing as Gandhi did and go back to year 1600 in terms of thought and way of living, stop using computers and electric light, stop travelling by air, stop taking Western medicines and so on. In all colonized countries of the past there are this type of resentful individuals, in Ireland, where they mostly speak English, they have nothing better but to hate the British; in Mexico, where they mostly speak Spanish, and they begin now to attack the Spanish and so on. We have to recognize the good done by colonialism as well as the evil, but it is useless to concentrate on the evil without incurring in an existential contradiction. The simple fact is that History advances by brute force and that this brute force also carries good in itself. At the end of the day, better to be colonized by cultures that carry with them ideas like individual and social freedom than cultures that carry with them enslaving ideas.

He can't go back in time. Also, only because colonialism brought positive effects with it, it's not morally right per default.
