It’s one I’m so deeply in love with BUT, fair warning, when I first tried it my novice nose didn’t know what to think!! So it’s one you may have to come back to a few times and give it time to speak to you if you’re only familiar with mainstream designers. Amazing video as always, and a lot of food for thought. I decided to play along despite the task being extremely difficult: it's heartbreaking having to only chose 5. Why? Why do we put ourselves into that kind of trauma??? I won't start making honorable mentions because that list alone would go on forever (I'm so sorry for all those fragrances on my shelves that I adore but that didn't make the final cut). But I noticed that we're easily inclined to pick the more expensive fragrances for our Top list. After all, it would be difficult to justify buying bottles worth hundreds of dollars and not preffering them over cheapies. That would make us look like fools and we don't want that, do we? Haha... Oh well... So here is the result of my selection, from number 5 all the way to number 1. The Ultimate Citrus Freshie: This one is like the Marmite of the fragrance world - polarising! You either love it or you hate it (it has an unbelievable rating of 3.25/5 on Fragrantica and many hate it and compare it to a cheap detergent). For me, it’s the olfactory equivalent of a crisp immaculate white bed sheet, freshly laundered and billowing in a summer breeze under a bright sun and a blue sky. It’s my go-to armor against the heat, whenever I'm hot or sweaty I wear this and I instantly feel fresher, cleaner, pure and sharp. And it performs very well too. In fact I like it so much for that "clean" airy angelic feeling that I bought the soap (will definitely buy it again) and the fabric softener (will NOT buy it again). That one is Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis Cologne Forte and it could have been my number 2 if I made this list a few months ago or if I do it again in a few months. Class in a bottle: Choosing a favorite from Parfums de Marly is like picking a favorite child, it’s nearly impossible. I have smelled all of them (except the last one Perseus yet) and loved all of them (those have to be worn to be understood most of the time, on paper they're like "Meh"). Honestly, Herod could have been the number one from the house for me based on the smell only, if only it had the stamina (which it very badly lacks). Layton was also a very VERY close contender too (although it lacks longevity as well). But Carlisle… oh, Carlisle! This one makes me feel like I’ve just stepped out of a James Bond movie - suave, sophisticated, sexy, bold and undeniably SPECIAL. My ‘other’ ultimate freshie, but this time with a fruity twist: It’s like diving into a cool, crystal-clear ocean (or a luxurious swimming pool because to me the ocean smells like fish, seaweed and salt and I don't really want to smell like that, nope), bursting with the vibrant colors of mouth-watering fresh fruits (orange, cedrat, lemon, black currant, apricot, figs, dates...). Fresh and fruity. But super natural smelling and undeniably classy. And the best part? It doesn’t disappear after an hour, which for such a scent profile is a miracle. It’s a quite long-lasting wave of freshness (especially when sprayed on clothes) from which I can get wafts after many hours. That's Louis Vuitton Pacific Chill. The "I'm THE man, I'm a Rock Star". This one is magic and not just a fragrance, it’s a first-class ticket to a sensory journey. It evolves and morphs over hours, revealing new facets and surprises along the way. Starting from the rum mixed with passionfruit, bergamot and geranium, going through the most exquisite patchouli (and I thought I didn't like that note), leather, cinnamon and rose, and finishing up on a bed of caramel, vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood, labdanum, musk and ambergris. It’s my latest ‘coup de cœur’ and I think the brand's masterpiece among many masterpieces, a bottled symphony of class and sophistication under heavy guitar riffing. That's none other than Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special of course. And finally the one that opened the niche doors to me. Yes, it’s popular. Yes the bottle is gorgeous. Yes, it’s "everywhere" (although, let's be real, absolutely nobody around me ever heard about it nor the brand). Yes it's been hyped to death and is super mass appealing. And yes, sadly it doesn't perform too well. But when I first smelled it it was like discovering color TV after years of black and white. It made me understand what I was missing from most designer fragrances and got me to lose a little bit of appreciation for everything else in my collection at the time. It’s so amazing, complex in its simplicity, yet incredibly natural-smelling. It perfectly captures the essence of its name. The only thing it's missing is longevity. I’m eyeing the Parfum Pour Homme version next, hoping it can deliver the same magic with more staying power (apparently they both smell absolutely similar, unlike the Enigma PC vs Parfum). So you guessed it again (how many did you guess before the reveal by the way?), that's Roja Elysium Parfum Cologne. The only expensive bottle I have a backup of. So there you have it, my top 5 fragrances (at this very day) that are as much a part of me as my own skin. Each one tells a story (or has a story attached), each one is a chapter in my relatively new olfactory autobiography (after all I only really started caring about perfumery a year and a half ago). It's all subjective of course and the best fragrance is the one that makes you happy, but I'd be curious to know your thoughts about those. Cheers man!

Oh yessss I can’t wait to see your selections!! I feel your pain, it was super tough to narrow it down to just 5! Wowwwwww MFK Aqua Universalis Forte is a wonderful scent! I sampled it and I love it but it doesn’t perform very well on me. That’s why I rock with Gentle Fluidity Silver in the summer, it works a lot better on my skin and the scent is heavenly! I’ll have to give AUF another try tho cuz it is great. Idc if people call it a detergent scent, it’s pure loveliness in a bottle, Cap’n Kurk don’t mess around!!! Had to have a PDM too, I love Layton to bits but man, so many could've ended up on my list! Oh wow I’ve never had longevity problems with Layton or Herod but woahhhhh mama, I agree, Carlisle not only is one of the best blends of all time but also TURBO NUCLEAR on performance ☢️ !! Hmmm I’ll have to dive into more of the LV stuff, I’ve smelled afternoon swim and it’s a banger but I will absolutely try Pacific Chill. I wish they sold their bottles in 50ml 😠!!! No wayyyyy you got the Tony Iommi??! Well… good news… I just got that one too 😆! I’ll be unboxing and reviewing it soon 🎉! Never smelled it but I had to get it, it just sounds way too perfect for me and hearing your praises is even more reassuring. Oh, John loves Elysium Parfum Cologne, he brought it to the house actually and showed it to me. I love it but WOOF those Roja’s can cost a pretty penny 😬! One of my most worn fragrances last fall and winter was Rochas Moustache, which parallels John’s #5 pick and your comparison. I have Xerjoff Don in my collection, and just this week I was looking at the bottle and wondering how I didn’t wear it more last winter because it’s incredibly good. Then John picks Encelade at #4 which I also own, and my mind was blown. I was just wearing it a couple weeks ago! I have a sample of Nishane Ani and it’s on my short list, so through the first couple rounds I was excitedly pumping my fist in the air. Then you said PDM Layton which I own and wear often. I was cheering out loud at that point! There was a nod to Intense Cafe, which I also own. It went off the rails (my rails) after that, because I haven’t had the pleasure to get my nose on any of the rest of the fragrances you mentioned. I can only imagine how great they are. This was such a fun video! My top 5 (based on my more limited collection) would be different, but a few of the ones in your video would be up for consideration for sure.

@@dr.magnifiscent 1. Zaharoff - Signature Rosé 2. Dior - Homme Parfum 3. Tom Ford - Black Orchid EDP 4. Nishane - Nefs 5. PDM - Layton There were several that I could have picked at number 5 which I find equally good. Creed - Green Irish Tweed, The Dua Brand - Fougere De Agar and Marc Antoine Barrois - Ganymede to name a few, although I find myself reaching for Essential Parfums - Bois Imperial far more often than Ganymede. Both are by Quentin Bisch, and in the same ballpark, but I find Bois Imperial to be a little fresher and more accessible to a novice nostril. But this isn’t really a list about what I reach for most often. Those top 5 (with 5 being a bit interchangeable) are the best of my collection to my nose. Black Orchid EDP will always rank highly for me as there is nothing like it in my collection, and it was the first designer fragrance I ever bought years ago. It opened my eyes, and more importantly my nose, to a whole new world. And honestly, it punches well above its price range even to this day.

What’s up doc. This selection is definitely eclectic but for me I think the brand selection is rather… pedestrian? I don’t mean to say this in a bad way just that the brands I enjoy are slightly more off the beaten path than these. Don’t let it stop you from enjoying them at all god no. My grails are Les Indemodables ambre supreme (superb ambergris), a 10ml decant of of bortnikoff’s Tabac Doré (fruity chocolate tobacco that uses the real tobacco material, a rarity in today’s day and age), and TWO vintage bottles of guerlain’s samsara edt (the milkiest floral sandalwood you’ll ever smell, almost bubble-bath-like)

Ombré leather is very meh to me. It smells like a good leather designer but it’s very linear and I get bored within minutes after spraying it…Tuscan leather has the magic. Also, if you’re looking for a unique leather fragrance try Tumi’s 19 degree. It’s has a very unique smell and it’s addictive.
