We grew up in a family of 10 with one dairy cow. She got our family through so many years! In Michigan, we had a horrific incident in the 1970s where cattle were unintentionally poisoned via their feed and had to be destroyed. All the cattle, dairy cows, milk and by-products of dairy couldn't be consumed. By the Grace of God, my dad always took special care of our dairy cow's feed and did not use what was being fed to the mass majority - farmers were devastated - it was horrible. Our family was mostly protected during that time. One of the things my father attempted to make was cottage cheese - we did NOT enjoy it at all! Is that something you would try and show us? Thank you!

I actually remember that incident, there was a movie made about that just can't remember the name of it, I was raised on a huge farm here in Kentucky, we had a feeder operation. I can remember asking my dad if we were going to lose our cows as we ran around 200 - 350 head at a time. We made our own feed with what we grew here on the farm. I think I was like 6-7 yrs old at that time.

3 years ago, I had a first calf Jersey heifer and, like you, had to teach her everything. The BIG difference here was it was also MY FIRST DAIRY cow!!!! We were learning together! Her first calf was actually calVES....she had twins her first time! I know what you're talking about with the sound effects of surprise. Brownie would look from one calf to the other, and her moo was like moo(two) with that high note at the end!!! We left both calves on her, separated them at night, and only milked her once a day and still got over 2 gallons a day from her. Unfortunately, it got to be too much for me, by myself (I'm 66), so I sold her to a young family just starting out homesteading. I sure do miss the milk and cream, though! Something I would be interested in seeing is information about the care and maintenance of your milking equipment. That was my biggest struggle...having to figure out how to clean and maintain the equipment. Also, maybe the best and quickest way to strain and chill the milk...and then when and how to skim the cream by hand. These are things I needed help with when I first started milking. I've been following yall for about 4 years now and have learned so much... you both are an inspiration to young (and old) homesteaders! God has truly blessed yall!

Hand milking a high producing dairy cow is tough on the cow. When a cow's oxytocin response (milk let-down) happens, it is best to calmly and quickly harvest the milk to minimize the chance of mastitis. If Sarah already began milking the cow with the machine, she should stick to using the machine for the health of the cow. Much like many videos ago when a lifelong farm gal named Phoebe correctly advised in this channel's comments to use a 4 claw cow milk machine, not a 2 claw goat machine.

I've had dairy goats. I make sure and freeze some colostrum every year. I mainly make cheese, buttermilk, and yogurt. I have friends who love raw milk, so I share with them. I freeze extra, and share with the dogs and cats. For me, making yogurt is easiest using my sous vide to maintain the temperature. I can do several quarts at a time. I mainly make a soft cheese like chevre or neufchatel. I find mozzarella too labor intensive. I think cheese making is a mystery to most people, so showing them how to do it would be great.

Oh I’m so excited for you!!! What a precious little guy!! Our cow is due to have her third calf on our homestead (5th ever), and I learned that she has to be re-trained to the stanchion every time! When she’s used to being milked, I can stand at the stanchion and call her, and she comes running, walks right in, and goes back to her pen after milking. When she’s been dry and hasn’t been milked for four months, I have to lead her in because she is just not interested.

Tex throws some beautiful calves...this little guy's conformation is wonderful! Making different cheeses would be of interest. Aside from making mozzarella, other cheese seem daunting from how much and where to purchase the supplies, to the right environment. I grew up milking our dairy cows, by hand, I would love to do that again but my husband is not so keen on it. Still praying about it...we are in our sixties so that may be pushing it as far as ambition...but i do love those dairy cows. God Bless. 24:01

Whew- I am very glad she had that calf okay- it is a big one for a jersey! You might want to leave that corral system by the barn, you never know when you need to catch up a cow or calf, and that makes it less stressful for everyone. Aalways good to halter train a dairy animal- and she can still learn- just tying them with a halter for a few minutes is a good way to start. Jerseys can be pretty scrappy and stubborn, worked with them for decades. Glad you are back in business!

We started dairy with goats then graduated to cows. We've had several Jersey. We liked them the most. The milk was fabulous for drinking and cheese making. We had a milking machine that was most welcome, and a cheese press for hard cheese and some equipment for soft cheeses. I really miss the milk. We were able to distribute our excess milk to others. That was a big help to keep waste down. She was free of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis so we felt safe to drink it without pasteurizing. We are now too old to mess with these conveniences that sustain a family and cut grocery costs.
