Ill keep saying my 2 cents here, I think there should be a Shelf addition in place of a dog bed addition to any coffee table option, this way it doesn't isolate to *only* dog owners, when your prototype is applicable to *many more customers* than dog owners
@ericbrueningsen48772 ай бұрын
^This right here. Modularity is arguable the cornerstone of WW design philosophy (imo at least) so adding that extra versatility would be sweet. I'm not sure if they still plan on having a panel that can slide in and out of the bed opening, but if so, having that in with a shelf would make a nice little area for wide storage.
@xLisranda2 ай бұрын
I feel like a big contributor to the less than stellar performance of the first round of modular desk was that it was competing in purpose against a LOT of generic stuff -- some of which frankly did the job better, though less attractive. The musician's keyboard tray is a first step in opening up the digital audio workstation market, for semi-professionals who would never use just a standard desk but aren't getting their studio furniture custom built for the space. For the large desk, a 19" rack module instead of drawers and a 2U 19" bridge-hutch over the top of the desk that doubles as a monitor stand would crack that market wide open. A drafting-desk/artist package that gives you a large adjustable angled work surface on top could crack a number of specialized markets. I think accessory packages that convert the base desk into the specialized desks used by different professions is the winning ticket. All of Wyrmwoods products target a special interest. MGT targets a special function. Having the desk be a modular system that can target any of several specialized professional product markets breaks it out of competing with IKEA.

I play piano since age 6 (20 years now, 16 of which I had a teacher) and I tried producing music a bit, but for me, a good setup to whip out at random times when a musical thought occurs was important, which is a big reason why it didn't go anywhere. I like the idea of sliding the keyboard under the table and having it available right there without the need of turning away from the screen or shuffling stuff around. Also just in general the space to store stuff that one needs at his desk on the daily like a drawing tablet with stylus, writing utensils, folders of current projects, etc. without having everything clutter and disturb the workspace.

That giant pullout tray is something I just wouldn't want... however! A giant enclosed pullout *_drawer..._* Now that would grab my attention. If you could, design it in such a where where the front and back could be closed up¹ while also using the same parts already being used for the keyboard style drawer, so you won't end up doubling your entire parts list for the drawer(s). The back could be something as simple as a thin MDF panel that slides down into a slot, since it wouldn't really be seen. Making the front aesthetically pleasing while also being easily convertible would be the more challenging aspect. ¹Definitely gotta plug those cable management slots in the back so all your random bits and bobs don't go flying out the back every time you open or close it.

The 90s called and wanted their keyboard drawers back. 😅 They're often not very good for ergonomics since the desk gets too thick. This forces you to raise it (to fit your legs under it), and that makes the desk surface to high for your arms and shoulders.

100% this. They're useless. They were great for very cheap desks, for very cramped spaces like a teen's bedroom. But not good for an adult buying a lifetime desk. I liked the idea when I first encountered it, but later in life, I just removed the things and didn't use them having banged my legs too many times. I feel like almost all the good ideas are in the SecretLab Magnus Pro and the Corsair desk, and Ergotrons pegboards and monitor mounts and so on. First, duplicate those. Second, don't try and innovate. Third, profit.

I can only speak for myself, but I love my keyboard drawer (at a desk I spend 8-10 hours at 5-6 days a week). It keeps the keyboard at the right height and the desk surface available for laptops, notes, papers, etc. Of course it should be an option as some people won't want it, and that's fine.
@jonevansauthor2 ай бұрын
As an addendum - as useful product would be something that mounted over the desk, and held a laptop, or keyboard, or stored one and let you pull it out. They've got that long monitor stand thingy and that could have such a drawer or slide out shelf in it, if it was screwed down/clamped to the desk top.

What percentage of people in this market have dogs in small cramped spaces who ALSO have $1000 to blow on a coffee table? Its gotta be pretty slim. America likes BIG things. @@SirRorando Yeah i just doubt its a sizable amount of customers for wyrmwood. Luxury coffee tables designed for dogs in a small new york, la, or other big city just feels a bit like trying to sell a car salesman a car. No doubt they're out there. If the smaller size creates sku bloat, additional overhead for the business, and a harder time forecasting stock...it feels like they would be far better off designing a lower cost sku that can be sized multiple ways. Its like selling a prophecy table for a NYC apartment. People blowing 10-20 grand on a table dont want it to only sit 6 people.

I have a coffee table with a lift top, and which is beat to hell and needs replacing. But there's a critical check that isn't clear from your videos: Does the top have enough room to do a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle comfortably? That's one of the most common use-cases for my coffee table, and I can't be alone there. If you're looking into niche nerd stuff for the desks, you'd definitely get some interest from me if I could get a mounted 19" server rack cabinet on one side. For me, I've got a bunch of networking gear piled up on/near the desk that I'd love to get more organized, and I know that pro audio editing equipment is often also rack-mounted. Definitely need good power and cable management for that, maybe some soundproofing. Right now I've got an Ikea bookshelf+desk combo that I'd like to replace with something nicer, but haven't come across anything that is as utilitarian in the same footprint.

Make the upper storage a drawer attached to the lid. This would make it more accessible when sitting on the couch.
@Reyn_Roadstorm2 ай бұрын
Probably more arguments to be made against that than their would be for it. The first would be that since it's designed as a dog bed, they would want to keep a solid ceiling in the kennel area so that when it's lifted the dog doesn't poke it's head up into the area where the drawer would nest. This would result in the depth of the drawer needing to be reduced, more hardware parts needing to be milled/ordered/tracked/etc, and the overall weight of the unit increasing. Also, because of the added weight of the drawer itself, as well as the new variable of the weight of whatever you put in the drawer (and you would of course have the weight of whatever is sitting ON the coffee table when it's closed too)... You could run into an issue where if the springs and soft close dampers were kept the same, they weren't strong enough for the added weight. Or if they were beefed up they may be too strong while it's unloaded, keeping the lid raised slightly. And then you get into considerations of stronger hardware costing more... Honestly the lift lid is going to have a downside pretty much no matter what. You can use it as a table to eat on or whatever or you can flip it around so it lifts away from you, giving easier access to the drawer but losing the use of the raised table.

The dampers would need to be calibrated to the topper weight. You can tell it's not closing all the way because the dampers are holding it up. Why not some gas struts instead of the spring loaded ones? They would also need calibration, but you get the spring open combined with dampening.
