You should always moor facing up stream in flood water Chris and Bex. As the boat is not designed to face currents from the rear. It makes for sometimes uncomfortable moorings and strange gurgling bubbling noises too.

Hi Chris and Bex. Serious safety issues here. You should always wear life jackets on the river, never go into locks with your fenders down, have an anchor ready to use if needed and as others have stated, run your centre line to the stern when cruising(safety and sensible). Happy future cruising, and more singing from Bex (not Chris) 😂😂x

Coupla hints from an old tar who lives off-grid (on-land now that I'm old)... When landing, hook your line around the mooring cleat and use it as a pulley rather than pulling straight from the bow or stern. Easier on your back and less chance of being pulled into the drink. Try turning at the mooring. Let go the stern line, give the bow line some slack, then push out the stern and let the current do the rest. Keep that motor running in the locks whenever you can get away with it. One doesn't want to risk having the engine not start and end up blocking the lock. If it's a long fill or drop, charge the portables? Put on PFDs - both of you! Bex is good, but the way that current was running, if you fell in and conked your head, you'd be long gone before she could get to you. The auto-inflate PFDs are pricey, but you hardly notice wearing them. You MAY find the issue with your batteries has to do with how low you drain them. Flooded (lead-acid) batteries will last 5-10 years if you don't let them drop below 50% charge. I know it sucks, but think of 50% as your floor and size your battery bank accordingly. I think your main panels are hard-mounted, but if you could work out a gimble or a way to quickly attach and release them, try angling your panels toward the south, at least in the winter. In December mine are at 67 degrees and I'm a fair bit south of you. You ought to be able to get quicker solar recharges on your portables if you angle those panels rather than laying them flat. I don't know how much of a brave face you two are sporting in the videos, but you DO appear happy! Bon Voyages!
@TheNomadicCrobotАй бұрын
Thank you so much for the advice, its been so long so iv already forgotten everything 😅 Thats interesting, we have just got in the habit of turning it off...I think narrowboat Will gave us that advice.. but completely see where you are coming from. Yes the batteries have always been in serious need of updating, i think we ruined them a few weeks in owning the narrowboat. We also need a whole new solar set up, the two small ones work well but not enough for full time off grid living. we have enjoyed the adventure though yes probably but a brave face on alot of the time, especially Bex having to put up with me 😂😂

Backing down stream in strong current should be done in forward gear, just reduced throttle or bumping in an out of forward gear, not using reverse. In reverse, you lose rudder control. You are not in control again until you shift in to forward again. That means you go past where you want to be an have to power back an over. But in idle forward gear, the current is still taking you backwards. But your prop is still pushing water over your rudder, giving you the same control as going forward. It gives you the ability to back straight in to a spot somewhere behind you, or move sideways straight in to a spot beside you. While it feels slower, you are going straight to where you want to be, not down an back. Its a little weird to think about as you are going backwards, but you drive like your going forward because you are going forward through the water.

Chris, I'm eagerly awaiting Wombat pulling you into the water... M'boy, when you have a bollard to play with (those metal or wood sticky-up things at some moorings), or a ring or two, take a turn around that with your mooring line and pull against that, rather than digging your heels in. AND Becs did an excellent job turning Wombat BUT you could have turned her at the mooring. Just run the forar'd line around the nearest bollard to hold the bow in, give the boat a kick with the engine and allow the flow to catch her stern and swing her, using the forar'd line/bollard as a pivot.

When you get back sit down and think how you could have done better. In particular the very important point made by 'tinkerbelle', the handling point made by 'Rebelcowboys', also moor with bows against the current to avoid debris damage to your prop and check the weather before setting off. There is an old saying that cowards live longer than heroes but well done eventually.

To live on the water, whether house or boat requires $$$. Though it's been a learning process, common sense seems to be lacking here. You're not off grid if you are dependent on others to bail you out when problems occur, which happens frequently when attempting to live on a rusting boat. Most boaters appear to be suffering from lack of knowledge and most importantly, $$$$$. Yes, you need money to live, who knew! Kudos to your tenacity. You might want to reflect on your future boat life.
