Uncover the fascinating world of archaeology in the most unexpected of places - Our Farmyard! Join us as we dig deep into the history buried beneath the soil, revealing the secrets of past generations of those who once called these outbuildings home. With bottles from 1917, charred wood and pottery, this exploration will try to shed light on a side of history often overlooked. Watch now to discover Our Dirty Secret: Archaeology In The Farmyard (We're No Time Team Though).
With more, possible ancient, drainage found in the old farmyard, we are excited to share our discovery as we continue our amateur archaeology dig.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

Our dirty little secret is out! This is just a short video after some secret digging Sunday. We know it might not be everyone's cup of tea so please let us know below if this is something you would like to see updates of, from time to time, should we discover more or make any more progress, but we thought we should at least share this latest find with you all. Or, should we just keep it our Dirty Little Secret?

So many people moaned at Dan on Escape to rural France about him doing more noggings - did Dan stop recording his videos? Nope and now he is giving a Disney land holiday away to the person who correctly states the number of times the word "noggings" appeared in one of his videos 🤣 Your subscriber's decided to subscribe because they enjoy your content and the 2 of you ❤❤

It's your backburner project! Cool. I have to say if you had brought anything in mechanized you would have had a muddy mess there. We owned quite a bit of farm ground and equipment and I've seen what happens when you try to take the "easy" way and wind up with more work than you need. I think this is incredibly interesting. I think you are right and there was some type of drainage system there. We had the same thing. The drainage went out to a ditch and then around the barn and finally into a big pit that we pumped out. It kept everything contained. Just take what people say with a grain of salt. It is your property and the decisions made are yours. Even if they are wrong (and sometimes they will be), you learn in the process. And I like the digging. You find the most interesting things digging. When I see what you have done I am just amazed. You didn't just buy a house to fix up, you also bought neglected outbuildings and grounds. You are doing just fine.
@thecornerhouseproject

Ooh backburner project I love it! You’re right with any machinery, we’ve said so many times that we would have been so gutted if we’d caved and used a digger and destroyed whatever was there without knowing it was there. So we’re very happy with the choice we made. That’s not to say we would never use a digger for anything but it just has its time and place and that wasn’t it for us. Oh I’m sure we have done and will continue to make mistakes but like you say you learn from them and it’s sometimes the best to learn. Trial and error. Thank you for your lovely comment, as always they are a joy to read ❤️

I loved the digging. Am interested in the history of the old farm. I think the Gully's were covered with flat stones to keep the rainwater clean, the soil out and transport all the rainwater that fell off all the roofs. They didn't have gutters hanging under the roofs. This wasxquicjestcan easiest way

Hi Dawn and Ben, thank you for the bonus bit of filming. It is fascinating to see how the drainage gulley was designed all those years ago, absolutely nothing boring about seeing it being uncovered. Up to now, I have enjoyed every aspect of your journey, from the 'catflap' in the door' and the clearing out at the beginning and the horror of the shed roof caving in (after the clearance of the floor, ugh) to the garden clearance and the joy of new blossom. It will be a pleasure to keep following and sharing in the joy of it all. I am just confused that people think they should have any say in what you tackle, when or how. If they only want to see house renovations, there are plenty of other pages to follow which are dedicated to just that. Keep on keeping on, I think most are with you in your excitement, that is the joy of it. xx

Awwww the big cat flat in the door, you remember right back then and yes, the poor roof. Hopefully in the coming month or so we will get to put a roof back on it, that will be a wonder day when that happens. The apple trees are great, well, two out of three are good, the wind swept one isn't looking so great. We are really hoping we can find some more drainage but we are trying not to get too excited, just in case we have found it all already. Thank you so much for always watching and commenting Ellen :-)

I can’t help but think that the previous owners generations past, having had the same drainage issues tried to solve the situation using a series of gullies. Thank you Scottish Tart. We were surprised with what we found when we were just making a path, now we are blown away. Hopefully we can find where it comes from or goes too, but we will see. We always said from the very start that we wanted to keep the house as original as possible to start with. The walls inside the house uncovered, the doors and styles. Sadly the woodworm took a lot of that out of our hands and certain aspects have gone, like the partitions, but rest assured we will still be keeping as much as we can and reproducing things as needed. Hello Dawn, nice to see you in the middle of the week. You can count me among those who are interested in and have an appreciation for history. While I am looking forward to construction and repair projects on the house and outbuildings, I really enjoyed watching you and Ben clear your property and uncover what was hidden by the soil and composted manure. Half my ancestors came to Canada in the 1830s to about 1851 from various regions of Ireland, so I appreciate any insight into how they lived 200 years or more ago.
@thecornerhouseproject

It’s quite fascinating isn’t it? They knew how to make a farmyard work with very little other than what was locally sourced. I have an ancestor from Waterford,Ireland who went over to England in about 1870 I think, he was on my mums side of the family. I haven’t been able to find out much about him and his family in Ireland, only about his life path in England. This week has been more focused on the outbuilding and getting that ready for work on it and that is very exciting too! It’s been a long time coming!

I do make comments & offer suggestions because I think your work is interesting...And I know you have an audience & want to provide content that is liked.... but it is your project, your house, & your land. We don't live there, nor will we ever live there. You need to do what you find interesting & what is best for your situation. A digger might be cool & faster, but it just may not be the best choice for you. I think if you look at the majority of comments, we aren't complaining about these choices. Follow your own needs & passions, not a handfull on "offsite supervisors" who have no interest in your project other than directing actions according to what they think they would do in your situation.

Thank you very much and you’re right and we get too excited about things to not carry on with them lol. There’s lots of mundane in life isn’t there with the usual stuff like washing, housework, food shopping….its nice to have something so completely different to do, things that fire your imagination everyday! I think a digger would be cool to have a go at as well and there are a few things that we might possibly get a digger in for but we are very pleased we didn’t in this incidence. We’d have been gutted if we pulled all of that apart accidentally. We do know that the majority people only provide suggestions and advice with the very best intentions too and we do appreciate each and everyone 😊

Thank you Kathleen. We worked inside last summer as the getting into the house to live and ready for winter was our number one priority but missed the nice weather, all four days of it in between the rain, so hopefully this year we will get a better summer and can enjoy being outside. House stuff will still get done but the order of works isn't just a simple 1,2,3 as we need storage etc to then be able to clear rooms to work in them, so people may expect 1,2,3 but you know us, we have 9,3,6,8,2,4 hahaha. Thank you as always :-)
