Our Ducks HATE the New POND - Building a Duck Pond

We're building infrastructure to accomodate future growth such as barns, duck house, 7 coop chicken house, water hydrants, planting an orchard, building a garden etc. Chickens, ducks, geese, mini pigs, rabbits, a bunch of barn cats and two old english sheepdogs make up our team here at the farm. The ducks are being cautious. One laid an egg, because anxious. They need coaxing and will eventually go in. Really nice job, looks so relaxing with the waterfall part. Can't wait to see them enjoying it. I was so happy for the geese!

Everything is scare to critters until they learn it's ok. Don't force it. Maybe give them just a few of their tubs back and every couple of days move them closer to the pond and remove one until your real close to the pond. Maybe then they'll figure it out. It has turned out very nice, I'm loving it!!! Be patient it will happen 🌞😊

If you notice wild ducks can’t leave a lake until the lake is to so many feet in front of them. They can’t lift themselves up to fly. You might want to make a lower area for the duck to walk up and down into the water. Ducks realize they can’t get out of the pond. Some could drown. Ducks have shorter legs than your geese. Place flat stones and pea gravel around pond 5 or 6 ft. away from the water. Then the ducks and geese will keep the water clean and can get in or out. I would check with local wildlife rehabs around your area. They can tell you what to add.😊😊

You might place a small ramp in and out of the pond and cover all of the plastic with the extra dirt and landscaping materials….you did a GREAT JOB building this pond… I’m impressed!

@@ZippedUpKitz I’ve noticed already that if I let them all out at the same time the geese go in first and the ducks wait until the geese are done. But I’ve also seen a few ducks swimming then a goose come in and the ducks just continue swimming. I’ll get some great footage either way though.

On the one side I laid flat stones almost in the water I think it’s about 2” so they can get out easily. Although the ducks can always flutter to get out too.

Add P gravel to the bottom of the pond and around the edges. It should help P gravel. Tiny gravel. It might throw some lava rocks and some other interesting rocks around it as well in the bottom and around the sides. Fill in with the sand, play sand, but Kirk well 21:12

I had the same issue with mine. And like you, I also had water in small pans. I ended up putting their water containers right next to the pond. Our ducks eventually moved to the pond. Cheers

Looks really great! Love the water fall! 😊 Another benefit is that situating the pond next to the vegetable garden will improve the micro climate in the garden. The water holds the varmth from the day in the night.

You can either funnel them in with barriers on both sides or move one of their old pools right up against the pond and fill it up. They'll get figure it out. You did a great job!!

The pond looks fabulous with the border of flat rocks and the plants will fill in nicely. If you can grab a couple of ducks from their pen in the morning (especially if it’s still a little dark) you could plop them in and hopefully get the others to follow. You might want to pile some rocks against the edges inside the water so the ducks can push-off and up. -and for babies. Also - if you put some low fencing next to the black liner they can’t get out at that location. I had ducks for 20 years. 👏🏻🥳💚

We enticed our ducks with a handful of peas, but its not something they can have too much of too often - due to the high niacin content. maybe a trail of peas leading into the pool and drop some into the water for them to dive out. They loved the frozen peas on hot days, my wife compared it to giving kids ice lollies on hot summers days.

If you had seen my goofy looking grin the entire time watching the geese in the pond, you would know this video is not a failure. The ducks will catch on eventually. I just love watching the duck parade going to and from their coop! You did a WONDERFUL job on the pond. It is beautiful!

That pond looks amazing.. I think the ducks were actually waiting to go in the little pools but they were empty, they are so used to the pools they have no clue they can go in the pond. eventually they will and they will love it.

Big Rocks on the unwanted side for entry and exit. The rocks will also protect the liner edge.

I think you need some sort of ramp that goes into the pond. Some animals that may fall in won't be able to get out the way the geese can. Goslings and ducklings probably won't be able to get out either, or struggle at the very least. Otherwise, it's looking good! As for the ducks, they'll get the idea eventually I'm sure.

Well I put those flat type stones on the one side that makes it about 2 inches above the water, that’ll be fine for the birds I can always lay a log in there for other critters to escape.

You may try to disable the pump and see if ducks like it more. Some animals don't like the noise of running water, bc they need to hear predators moving on them.

Chad hey!! The goose and duck pond looks great. You just have to let those birds go at their own pace. I bet you they'll be in there within a couple days cuz they're going to want a bath😅!! I agree with you on covering up the mud dirt part and putting grass or pebbles or giant rocks around that pond. There will be a lot less erosion. Just give it time everything will fall in place.
