Did you know Emu's typically lay one egg every three days, usually at sunset. The male decides where he wants them laid & will tell the female, he won't sit on them until they have enough, sometimes this can be as many as a dozen. The first few tend not to be fertile but those that are can stay fertile for about 5 weeks before they start to lose fertility. How exciting to hear those words at White House On The Hill Farm- the emus have laid eggs! 🎉

As much as I love this channel and find it wholesome, I feel sometimes due diligence isn't done to research certain things like this. I know a lot is trial and error. We have forums and tons of resources for various aspects of farming and whatnot. I don't even farm, ranch, or anything and I frequent these just to learn. It just feels like either they're doing this without research (which is fine, I suppose) or it's to set a tone sometimes. I'm really not sure.... Again, love this channel and I think they're awesome people. It just disappointing sometimes. The videos sometimes make it out like "how were we supposed to know?!" When some basic research might've helped. Either way, I've been subbed since about... late 2018ish? I see them learning, which is the important thing.

I’m also a viewer of The Urban Rescue Ranch, and the channel runner, Ben, keep rheas, emus, and ostriches. He hasn’t ever had good luck with his breeding rhea being able to raise their own eggs either. He says they’re, quite frankly, just dumb. Don’t feel bad about having to collect and raise the eggs yourself, that seems to be quite common for captive ratites. He’s had success in incubating and raising their offspring himself though, and you guys already have experience successfully hatching and raising emus, so I’m super excited to see if these eggs are fertile and capable of hatching!

My suggestion is to take the new egg and eat scrambled eggs...taking care to examine the yolk first to see if fertile. Sacrifice one egg just to see so while you wait, wait and wait with Hope up high and just get rotten eggs. Probably not the popular comment

I don't know much about breeding ratites, but I know parrots can lay too many infertile eggs and start having to pull calcium from their bones. They just keep laying eggs until either laying season ends or you leave some of them in there. If emus are like parrots, you'll want to significantly increase the amount of calcium they are getting and/or put some dummy eggs in so she thinks there's a full nest and stops laying.

When you guys look for another bird to raise, I would like to draw your attention to the "Chukar Partridge". Chukars were imported from Afghanistan, where there is desert and high cold mountains. They were originally introduced into Nevada and Utah, but migrated to Idaho. I had a visit from a one about 5 years ago and I asked my DNR what they were. They informed me it was a Chukar, but there were none in SW North Dakota. I let them know I had coffee with one that morning on my deck. It was very sweet, and not very shy. I left it alone and when I came back it ducked down behind a tuft of grass and hid it's head. It would dress out at about 2 - 2 1/2 pounds. I know partridge is very tasty, but it take many to make a meal. The size of this bird was so much larger, I was surprised it was a partridge. Just a thought. Meyer Hatchery has chicks.
