Josh: Let me take a crack at the slash question. A homesteading perm culturist can totally use the fiber as he is the harvester and end user. Rough milled timber can be used for farm structures pole barns, stalls, corrals, chicken coups, pig goat and sheep enclosures, raised garden beds, other garden structures, furniture, siding, etc. But you will have to mill it 2-3 years in advance for natural air drying and have the right climate. The small wood can be double chipped as a soil amendment; branches with leaves or needles partial feed for goats and pigs, the carbon portion of a compost pile or Hugelculture bed, some animal bedding, and control of mud in high traffic areas and paths for your animals. Now a residence is a different story. In modern society wood framing must be with graded wood and have been approved for the purpose as are all materials for shear application, ply wood, OSB, gyprock etc. These structural and safety tests have developed into a building code over the years to simplify general construction. All others must be signed off by Architects and engineers who assume responsibility for the structure, safety and INSURABILITY as required by the insurance companies. Most of the materials in a residence must have passed a multitude of tests assuring their suitability and have been approved by a variety of control bodies before approval of use in a building code. All these standards and substituent approvals are impossible to be met by an individual. No use of approved, tested materials and application; no passing inspection, no occupancy permit, no insurability, no resale value. But as Josh stated these non graded wood products can be be used in the non structural components of the residence. Siding if shear is otherwise provided for, decoration interior and exterior. In most cases you can use your home milled material after the framing with graded, approved materials; has passed inspection. The dry-in stage. Now lets give it some class to suit the end users taste. the old guy Bert

Bert, I agree with most of what you said but tell me where in North Idaho I spend a dollar to make wood chips and sell them for two dollars? 💵

Well said Josh, you have to do what is the most cost-effective way to get the job done unless someone else is footing the bill. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

It’s crazy how people romanticize gathering and processing fire wood. If you have the tools and equipment and manpower then sure it’s super easy. But if you don’t… It’s back breaking work gathering enough wood for winter in the northern states.

How are the lot sales? I haven't been caught up on you're videos. Hope diesel fuel costs are not rising, like here in my neck of the woods.

Slash and burn, burn and turn. No time or money to have those piles hanging around. We're going to have a nice bonfire next month. 😁

Utopianism is at epidemic proportions these days. Ppl can always figure out how you can add extra hours to your day. Just work 48 hrs a day Josh. Armchair quarterbacks abound. Heh, believe me...everyone on the interwebs knows more about farming than me. I'm a 40 yr rookie farmer. Tell the wood chip advocates that wood ash produces pure minerals, as a byproduct. Ash is much better than wood chips, as the nutrients are immediately available.
