I used to work in Spitalfields Fruit & veg & Flower market as a salesman from 1984-1989. Best job I ever had.

Does it not break your heart to see what it has become?
@tonyhogwood47375 жыл бұрын
@@garethhanby It sure does, the market moved to Hackney Marshes at the time I left in 1989, I suppose it was better to use the old building for something else rather than demolish it and put up a glass monstrosity.
@garethhanby5 жыл бұрын
@@tonyhogwood4737 I've been to the new market. Yes, it does look like a warehouse from the outside, but inside I'm sure you would feel at home. I'm as guilty as anyone as I use all the old markets, but I would have loved to have seen them in the 70/80s. Progress I suppose.

Sunday is traditionally the casual market day in London, often held in what were wholesale produce markets such as Smithfield ( meat ), Borough Market ( Fruit & Veg ) and Covent Garden ( Flowers & Fruit ) as they only operated Mon - Sat. or Tue - Sat. As a lot of Traders were of Jewish heritage it was the first day of the week. The Sabbath being sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. Brick Lane is noted for it's Bagels and Eel, Pie and Mash cafes, some going back generations of the same Family.

Spiitafield was a fruit and veg market. I worked in Artillery Lane, almost next door and saw it's final closure and it's subsequent develoment into a covered street market. I also witnessed the excavation of the car park and the finding of the mass graves of the plague victims. The meat market was and, as far as I know, still is in Smithfield.
@tonys16365 жыл бұрын
@@frankcurtis6179 Stupid error on my part, somehow had Spittlefield stuck in my head, should take more care in the proof reading. The Supermarkets can take the blame for the demise of the Wholesale markets in general with only three surviving in or close to London these days.

Back info on the channel, how the new strategy is working for channel growth, plans for 2020 etc. Thanks for another lovely video.

If you are ever in the area, check our Leadenhall Market. There isnt a huge amount from a market perspective these days, but it is one of the oldest market places in London (est 1321) and its so pretty. Its not that far from London Bridge, Mansion House, Bank of England, Tower of London etc so plenty of places to walk to afterwards and the architecture in the area is pretty impressive. Closest Tube station is probably Bank

So fun! I love pursuing street markets, as well. When I was in England, I went to the Camden market. That vintage market looks amazing! I founded a vintage company (re-sell) for my mom 7yrs ago, and she takes it on the road regularly to sell at vintage markets around the US. Fun stuff 😊

Backyard Market Brick Lane looks beautiful for an antique market that sells clothes as well as food. It seems to me that the English culture, especially London, has taken a contemporary approach under some circumstances of late.

If you can get up to the Greenwich Market, it’s a small but wonderful one as well. Been to all you showed except the Maltby Street Market so we’ll be hitting it up in May when we visit again. Thanks!

Great video you guys, again lol, but you missed out the Gem of the markets really, and that is in Camden, and better to go when it is quieter like mon-fri even though it will still be relatively busy as such (Camden Market) and shops is a real must do, as it offers a bit of everything in a setting that is just awesome, shed loads of Native Foods of the world outlets all clubbed together, clothes, goods, music, and established Eateries and one in particular for me sticks out like a sore thumb, `Shaka Zulu` is just beyond awesome, it will blow your mind, you get a two for the price of one deal online for a 3 course meal plus if you tell them(sneaky trick) you are on your honeymoon, they will throw in a bottle of champers for you. The deals online for the vouchers are like discount code vouchers, and although it works out at around £50, i promise you will not be disappointed. Enjoy people!!! thanks for the video, stay safe. Chris.

@OfficiallySanctionedKATG5 жыл бұрын
Belgian combo that made its way through places like Holland and the Germanic countries and then out to America about 30/40/50 years ago. Has been available in the UK at least 40/50+ years as it was my Dads favourite when he was younger, in his 20s+, and he would be 85 now if he hadnt passed away.

Why not? It’s made roughly the same way you make pancake batter as long as you do shove a load of sugar in the mix. It can be sweet or savoury depending on what you stick on it.

I was in London in the early 1990s for an extensive time while studying in the UK and it never seemed as dangerous as it does today. Yes, I remember the warnings about the IRA bombings and to be on the lookout for unattended packages or luggage in the London Tube or around pubs that could be a possible bomb, but you never worried about sleeper cell crazy lone wolves attacking you with a knife out of nowhere.
