I really miss malls. It was a whole day of shopping, social interactions, walking about, entertainment and surprises. Nowadays people just sit at home all day on their computers. A whole generation of coach potatoes.

@Paul Oakwood, It's couch potatoes, not coach potatoes! If you're going to use a colloquialism that's iconic, you may want to spell it correctly so it doesnt become a different word entirely & change the whole meaning's origin... If the letter "a" was in closer proximity to the letter "u" on a keyboard I probably wouldn't have bother mentioning this, but they're on opposite sides of the keyboard. Just saying, right is right? Hehehe Have a nice day, sorry it wasn't intended to be sarcastic but when I noticed it, it changed the whole concept & would likely confuse someone from a different era who wasnt familiar with the term. For what it's worth, I wholeheartedly agree with your intended point, there are too damn many couch potatoes as it is! 😇

In the 1980's a furniture company named "This End Up" had stores in about 240 malls. Their furniture was very simple crate styled (hence the name) made of sturdy southern yellow pine. The company changed ownership several times and the mall stores were closed due to financial problems despite rising sales. I bought some furniture from a mall store in 1986 and still have it, in great shape to this day. I bought some replacement cusions through their website several months ago, so basically it's new furniture again. 🤠

I loved This End Up and had furniture of theirs in every room except my bedroom. Before I could get that room furnished we got orders for Hawaii. They didn’t have a TEU there but I love the bedroom set I got from the post exchange. Unfortunately we lost our home, then moved in with our kids, then a 20’ travel trailer so I had no use for my furniture and my hub was irritated at me for paying all the money for storage. My kids had some of it but then wanted to get their own stuff. I gave my furniture to a friend indefinitely but I also told her if she ever was in a place where she could get her own stuff she wasn’t allowed to sell it. She had to find someone who was in need and pass it on to them. She also had to tell that person the furniture was not to be sold. Only donated to someone in need. Her son got married and they needed a sofa so when my kids got their stuff her son came and got the sofa and he was told the same thing. No selling! I still have the Parsons table, my grandson has my son’s dresser and the 2 book cases that used to be in my living room. There’s a storage unit in the home office, the corner cabinet is downstairs. All told I still have 6 pieces left and I bought my first piece in 1984 after I graduated from nursing school. When we got ready to leave Hawaii they sent movers over to check out our stuff to see what they needed to bring to pack us up. The guy saw our stuff and thought he just needed one guy to help. My hub told him “You better check that sofa. It isn’t light.” The guy was shocked at how heavy one solid pine sofa could be. I guess the shipping crate appearance was deceiving. It was funny that our “shipping crate” furniture got put in those same shipping crates to be sent across the Pacific Ocean and then 1/2 way across country!! Sorry this is so long. I should have made it a regular comment. Got a little carried away! Amazingly enough you can still get their furniture but as you’d expect, the delivery fee is outrageous! Actually now that I think about it, they may have had a TEU in Hawaii but I couldn’t tell you why I didn’t furnish my bedroom with their product! Oh, and my friend did finally get rid of my furniture and she gave it to someone in need. I really miss my great furniture!

In the small Kansas city that I live in (popul. approx. 45 to 50k), there once were two malls. The oldest one was built in 1970. At it's peak, it had a theater with two screens; about twenty stores; and two video game arcades. It began dying in the mid-'80s. Now the only things left in it, are eight stores. And they are all set along the front of the building. The other mall was built in 1986. At it's peak, it had an eight screen theater; a food court with eight food businesses; two actual restaurants; and about forty stores. Now, it has a theater with six screens; the food court is completely closed; only one of the restaurants is still there; and there are only fifteen stores. And some of them are only open a few hours a week. It's a sad state of affairs, in this senior citizen's opinion.

Such great memories this brings back! I think every Saturday during the 1980's, I spent at the mall and recognize every single brand that was brought up in this video as my stomping grounds for hours and hours at the mall. My friends and I would ride the bus, get to the mall before many of the stores were open, and then - as they started to - peruse every single floorspace they had. Aladdin's Castle was a favorite (while we waited for the move to start in the 4 theatre "Metroplex" they had next door), then lunch in the food court, and then the afternoon perusing clothing, music and just being seen while watching others. I am somewhat surprised that B. Dalton Books (the largest competitor of Waldenbooks) wasn't featured - that was in almost every mall in my town. I never knew what happened to them. It's a shame today that most malls that still exist have either become ghost towns for low-budget, third-rate (or worse) stores, or become havens for gangs, drugs and violence. I remember when I was at that age, the mall was *THE* place to be. It was a highlight and major part of my adolescence.

I loved malls, go to one place and do everything, rain or shine. I can remember before that, department stores and branches. Men shops and womans boutiques, shoe shops, etc etc. I was always facinated how classy it was to go to a small mens shop in my small town, and men would go out of their way to wait on you, help you. My mother had to get me a new suit for a funeral, the man measured this and that and 30 minuets later I had my glad rags. It may still be service like this in cities, but you sure wont find it in Walmart,lol....

When I was 14, or 15 these malls were just coming in being. In Santa Clara where I lived it was around 1960 and we had the "VALLEY FAIR PLAZA". Who would have thought these kind of malls would dissappear. The big enclosed malls had everything. Restaurants, Theaters even Pet Stores and Ice Skating Rinks. It was a place where teens gathered together. Remember "Valley Girl" ? Gone are Stores like BULLOCK'S I. MAGNIN, JOSEPH MAGNIN, SEARS, MONTGOMERY WARD. Today everyone seems to buy online. It's a shame. There are alot of great memories still haunting those malls that are still around.

Sears was our family's go-to store. Everything from the washing machine to the console stereo had the Kenmore brand and back-to-school shopping at Sears was a family ritual. I still shake my head that a store that established could go under. You'd think, since they were the original shop from home outlet with their catalog in every house that they would have seen the potential of the Internet and been an innovator instead of letting other's take the lead there. As for Thom Mcan, there was a Thom Mcan store in our neighborhood shopping area. That was where we went for shoes and I still remember getting my first and only pair of penny loafers there. Seeing that fountain at the start reminded me of how I got my job working as a floor sweeper at the mall. The money used to go to charity but one Friday night the guy I replaced got it in his head to go fishing in the fountain for beer money. I guess he rolled up his pantlegs and was in the process of pulling the nickels, dimes, and quarters out when Alfred Taubman, the guy who owned the mall, happened to come through on an unexpected, after-hours visit. Anyway, the first thing he saw as he emerged from the back halls was this guy in the fountain and well, my buddy told me the next day there was an opening if I wanted it. I swept the floors for a few months. It was fun. I was 19 and hanging out at the mall wasn't a bad way to make a buck. I still have fond memories of Pat and Opal, the sister and sister-in-law duo who worked with us. They were in their early fifties. Really nice ladies who smoked Pall-Malls. I used to tease them about the manly cigarettes they smoked. I imagine they are long gone now. That mall is still around but I haven't been there in years. Still, my memories are fond ones. It was fun while it lasted.

When I grew up in late 60's to the early 80's on the outskirts of Houston there were very few retail stores. The local Sears catalog store was our go-to shopping location. The Sears Catalog store was very small with some large appliances, lawn mowers, and tools on display, but my mother would order Toughskin jeans and everything else at the counter. Then, in a week or so she would get a phone call the order was ready for pick-up. My father ordered one lawn mower that Sears Catalog store didn't have in stock. Sears called that my father could pick up the two lawn mowers. I went down to Sears with my father and he explained, over and over, he only ordered one lawn mower and even showed the receipt he only paid for one mower. Sears said the two lawn mowers were his. My father paid for one Craftsman lawn mower and got two. 🤣 The last photo of a KMart in a mall is something I had never seen before.

That and the fact that a lot of fast fashion factories were located in a completely lockdown area of China. Most people were working from home so they wore loungewear all day, erryday. I agree, no point in trying to shop for a new outfit these days, because the fashion is frumpy and grunge has apparently made a comeback with the kids.

Aladdin's Castle was bought out by pinball manufacturer Bally in the 1970s before being sold to Namco in the 90s. Namco had a chain of arcades of their own; Time Out Tunnel (they dropped "tunnel" by the end of the 80s). When Namco bought their rival Aladdin's Castle it created the largest arcade chain in the US. The decline in small arcades was less about home consoles (which, if anything, saved the game industry) and more about a boom in the Amusements Industry in the 90s. They were building little Amusement Parks in the malls. And some went Boom (Dave and Busters) and Bust (Jeepers). Amusement Centers evolved beyond just offering games and selling machines. Now they offer food and some other entertainment like bowling or billiards to pad their profits. Namco still runs an Arcade/Amusement Chain in the US. It's called Round 1, now.

Sears and Aladdin's Castle hold some great memories for me. My first real part time job was at Sears as a 16 year old. When my shift was over I would walk across the parking lot to Aladdin's Castle and usually stay a half hour or so before the bus came and stopped right out front to take me home. And yeah, there were occasions when I missed it when i was really into whatever game i was playing, , but the second one came after another 40 minutes and I never missed the second bus. Unfortunately I never got particularly good at any one single game, so the place really did eat a lot of my quarters. But I enjoyed watching others play who were good, as much as playing myself, so thankfully I didn't spend my whole paycheck at the place!

Everyone that has grown up and missed the mall scene you missed out big time, it was always packed and on the weekends as teens we'd go there to meet the opposite sex and mingle or just people watch. It was the town square of America for decades.

Not sire where you are on the west coast, but every single one of these were in the California malls I worked at.

I was very purposeful when I went to the mall on my own but loved the family trips. My father & I would hit Radio Shack, & the Sears electronics and watches departments. My mother and sister did their own thing and we’d meet up at the food court or in front of Penny’s. And don’t forget the DQ milkshake! The first mall I remember was in Washington PA around 1970. Then a huge one in Cleveland suburbs, then Youngstown and Hanes Mall in Winston Salem. Even during later family holiday visits, heading to the local mall was the thing to do.

What wonderful memories - I remember almost all of these stores and still miss them. The history behind each store was fascinating. Thank you so much!

I remember our local mall had a Swiss Colony and Paul Harris, at which I worked for a short time.

Electronics Boutique, the first computer games / console games store I remember until GameSpot bought them out I think. Spent my paper route money there many times in the 90s.

Nearly 60 years have passed since Malls became a part of suburban shopping.... now like the downtowns stores of the previous generation the malls are on the way to near extinction. Change is part of life. Thanks for remembering these stores.

Goes hand in hand, I feel, with Walden Books. B.Dalton Books. Loved both as a kid.

I can still flip through vinyl records at a good pace. So many of us also spent time with our mom's Christmas shopping, getting winter clothes etc. Seems like a much more innocent happy time. 🙂
