As a teenager in the 80’s the mall was the place to be with so much to do. Food, shopping, arcade, movie theater, roller skating rink, and just hanging out. I feel bad that kids don’t have places like that anymore. Well just like malls killed downtown shopping online shopping is killing malls. There is still something about able to physically see something before you buy it though that can’t be replicated.

I remember all of these stores, the internet age truly destroyed the Shopping Mall, it's a shock that there are still Malls at all. I believe the only reason there are some still surviving, is because you still have enough folks who still like to go and spend money at a physical store in a Mall. It's a shame, I grew up as a Mallrat lol , always the hangout in the winter months and sometimes in the summer of the 80's & 90's with my friends. Good ole days long gone.

We have at least three malls that are still quite popular in my home state of CT. All three mall owners have done an excellent job of bringing in new businesses in order to keep people visiting/shopping. We have at least three malls that are slowly going south with their lack of business. It's just a matter of how well those developers are working those properties to squeeze as many dollars as possible.

If physical stores were able to offer the same prices as online, I think it would be better for malls. But why drive somewhere to pay more? One reason many teachers nowadays teach school like they are going to the gym is because how can you go shopping for an outfit as a woman online? At least at a mall you could go from one store to another and put an entire ensemble together within an hour if you knew what you were looking for. Because that would take too much time and effort nowadays, people just shop at Target/Walmart/Costco. Where are you going to put an entire nice ensemble together today? Macy's, that's about it and the people that work I. The clothing department there also dress like they cannot be bothered.

When i was growing up there were mainly the big stand alone Discount Stores like Gibson's, Wells, Alco and Duckwalls. This was before Wal-Mart came on the scene in our area. And there were what we called shopping centers, lines of stores all with their own outside entrance. When our little town finally got a big fancy Mall in the mid 80's it was a huge deal. Local businesses were furious not only for the competition but the City agreed to give the Mall Owners tax breaks to lure them in. It was anchored with Sears and J.C Penney, along with all the other popular Mall stores. i couldn't believe when Sears finally closed their doors for good.

It’s worth mentioning that Sears was close to closing out years ago. Eddie Lampert and his hedge fund pumped billions into it trying to revive it. This was a win/lose situation. Eddie personally kept Sears going including putting his own money in and loaning money. However, he also became CEO and didn’t run things well. They sold off Craftsman tool line and Kenmore appliances to raise cash to stay afloat but doing so ruined them eventually.

I think it is especially sad for seniors because this was a nice place for families or their adult children to accompany them to do some shopping or find a nice place for them to rest and people watch, maybe take them to a nice restaurant in the mall for lunch or coffee to make them feel special. Growing up, my dad's widowed mom lived in a tiny apartment. It had a living room, a single bedroom, a bathroom and an alcove kitchen. My aunts and uncles lived 90, 60 and 15 minutes away while we lived 6 hours away. We would visit on all the holiday weekends with a family picnic in summer. Then she would come visit us and stay about 3 weeks. We would take her shopping. She LOVED KMart. We lived a mile from there. Back then, the average age of the store employee was about 50-60 !and worked there forever.

I spent the first 15 years of my career traveling the country building chain stores. I built many of them listed in this video. As a young man (mid 20's in the mid 80's) it was glamorous to get to see new cities, eat local food, and meet new people. But, the work was hard too. Very hard, and the deadlines imposed by these chain stores to complete the projects were completely insane. I was in it long enough that I built a Hickory Farms store, and tore it out later in order to build a Walden Books store. That one really hit home. It was fun at the time, but I can't say I miss it. Many mall *landlords* were absolutely brutal, and went out of their way to cause problems for the contractors. When people go to these stores to shop, they have no idea of what took place to make that experience possible.

What about the great Pickwick Books from the 70’s? Also The Wherehouse was a good record store that had a better selection and cheaper prices than Sam Goody or Musicland. I still miss both those stores from my youth. A really good mall also had a UA cinema in it as well.

I remember a mall store called Oshman's Sporting Goods. They sold a variety of sporting goods. I remember that they even had a layaway program. Who even has that anymore.

Anyone remember Spencers Gift Shop in the mid ‘70s? The home of posters, black lights, lava lamps, candles, and bongs.

Yup. My parents hated the stuff I bought...

Both Chess King and Wilson's Leather had stand-alone stores in downtown Boston. And in the 90s, I bought really nice leather jackets, at both.

The mall closest to me still has a JCPenney. We’ve all wondered how it’s still open. A Hickory Farms pops up in a storefront in a strip mall across from our mall every Christmas. I miss Dillard’s store for sure. But overall, I miss malls and the way they used to be. ❤️

I grew up in iowa in 80s and 90s. Between small mall in Iowa falls, and malls in Marshalltown, Ames, Cedar Falls, Fort Dodge and Des Moines i went to plus early 2000s in Fayetteville, AR, Penneys, and Gadzooks and maybe B.Daulton books are all I ever remember seeing. I bought some hawaiian shirts at gadzooks around 2000. Growing up in iowa mom and sister would shop in pennys and try on clothes while i wondered the rest of the mall or played video games in sears, hung out in baseball card shop, looked at toys and model railroad stuff in KB toys, movies in suncoast or casettes or cds in musicland or just speed walked laps in the mall. going to the mall in another city was our vacation for the month. after shopping in the mall, kmart, walmart, target for the day we get supper at mcdonalds or bonanza buffet. our town didnt have any fast food chains.

I remember a men's store called Richman Brothers. They were in malls in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Their ad was "Richman Brothers' 700 fussy tailors make you know that you look great!" Also every mall seemed to have a Singer Sewing Center.

I miss malls and I want them back. Buying clothes online just doesn't do it. If I can't try it on, I'll do without.

Here in Texas every mall had a guitar shop or general musical instrument shop, but for some reason they all disappeared pretty much all at once around 1989/1990. I also miss Kay-Bee toys and Toy-Box. Plus Tape World. They carried a lot (but not all) of the early thrash-metal bands that the big-brand music stores would not touch. So you could find Metallica, Voivod, Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus, and others before mainstream stores would even think about touching that kind of music.

The same applies to Germany as well, but we never had huge malls. It's on us to decide to go a different way more and more. Right now, photo stores are coming back, local coffee roasteries are complete new, new production methods allows tailor made clothing, and you decide the fabrics, grocery stores are most local behind a cooperative and with local products.

I remember Petite Sophisticate. Back when I had to get all dressed up for an office job it was my go-to to find blazers and dress pants that actually fit my 5' frame. I miss that. It's becoming increasingly rare to be able to find any petite size clothing in stores at all. And what's there are styles that even my 84 year old mom would call frumpy. It's such a bummer that everything is going online because I hate shopping for things to wear online. Super inconvenient having to guess what size to get, order it, have it shipped and 9 times out of 10 having to return the damn thing and order a different size.
So many iconic brands and stores gone. From our childhood and younger years. Somethings missing from life these last several years. Seems a lifetime ago. I guess just a pert of getting old or older 🤷

As a teenager in the 1970s i used to go in the girly magazine section of the book store and look through the pages before the clerk came over to tell me I'm too young to be in that section. 😇

Looking back at the regional mall, which seems to be on the "death spiral"... there's still a few mall stores that have disappeared over time... * K.B. Toys (Toys) * Software Ect. (PC / Console gaming -- eventually became Gamestop) * Aladdin's Castle (Arcade) * Payless Shoes (Budget Shoes) * Radio Shack (Tech / Parts) * Yonkers (Department / Clothing) * Sears There's likely others that have vanished as well (beyond the ones covered in the video)... but I've likely forgotten about them over the decades.

Early-mid 1970’s I bought a lot of my clothes at Chess King. I was the sharpest hippie in town. Hickory Farms was a good place to Holiday shop. Their cheese and sausage platters or cheese balls made great gifts. I’d always buy an extra for myself

We still have South- West Mall in Cleveland. They are doing pretty well. Macy's, Dillards. JCPenney are still there, a lot of young adults clothing stores, not expensive, some kind of game stores, movie theater, food court, kids train, pictures with Santa etc. People need mall entertaiment more then mall shopping these days.

I loved novelty stores as a kid and one of my favorites was Norney's. They had stuff for any age to play with. Another store I appreciated that is still around today is Spencer Gifts, although they have shortened the name to Spencer's. Back then it was a lot more kid friendly than it is now. Nowadays, there are still a few good malls out there. I find they commonly have Target as at least one of their anchor stores, as well as a modern movie theater with reserved plush and heated seats. People still like to watch the big screen and shop afterward!
