God Only Knows is also my favorite track of 1966 and of all time. It’s gained even a stronger emotional connection with me due to recent events. My best friend had a wedding in June. His sick mother flew out to see him and danced with him to that song. It brought tears to my eyes watching that moment captured in time. She sadly passed away the following month. He tells me he can’t listen to the song without breaking down now. It’s such a powerful piece of music.

One can agree or disagree with individual picks of albums or songs in every video... but one thing is clear: ALL of you picking "God Only Knows" (including making it your favorite song of all-time for some of you), cements your place in history as: HAVING GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC. Thanks for doing this. Great as usual! ...and yeah: "Secret Agent Man" and "These Boots Are Made For Walking" are so amazing. I'd have to have "Good Vibrations," "Sloop John B," and "You Still Believe In Me" (Beach Boys) on the list... along with "Tomorrow Never Knows," (Beatles) and "A Poem On The Underground Wall" (Simon & Garfunkel)... Close: ""A Simple Desultory Philippic (or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission)" (Simon & Garfunkel), "Eight Miles High" (The Byrds), "Paint It Black" (Rolling Stones), 19th Nervous Breakdown (Rolling Stones), Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles), California Dreaming (Mamas and the Papas), "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (Beach Boys)

1966 was an excellent year for pop. Not only the best year so far in this series, but I probably consider it the deepest year of the 1960s in terms of great singles. All these are Hot 100 charting singles: 1. Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? - The Rolling Stones (#9). My favorite early Stones song, and one I think is maybe a bit underrated due to it being a non-album single. The bass and drums really shine on this, and the horns are awesome. I also dig Mick's dark, cryptic lyrics ("You take your choice at this time, the brave old world or the slide to the depths of decline.") 2. These Boots are Made for Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra (#1). Another great tune where the bass and horns are the star of the show. The grammatically questionable lyrics are also classic ("You keep lyin' when you ought to be truthin'"). 3. Solitary Man - Neil Diamond (#55). Easily one of the more underrated artists of the '60s. Forget Brian Wilson. If you want to hear some A+ songs with great vocal performances and immaculate production, Neil Diamond's Bang Records singles are where it's at. Every part on this sucker is perfect. Never has a trombone sounded so cool. 4. 7 And 7 Is - Love (#33). It's still crazy to me that this song came out and was a hit in 1966. It's a great proto-punk, garage psych-rock freak out. The best choppy tremolo guitar riff until the Smiths' "How Soon is Now?", and I love how it just shifts into the dreamy '50s-style guitar outro. 5. Sloop John B - The Beach Boys (#3). Not a band I'm that crazy about, but I think this really shows off Brian Wilson's best skillset - being an inventive arranger. Easily my favorite Beach Boys song, and probably the only one I'd say I love. I think it's probably the glockenspiel. Plus, since it's a cover, they don't have a chance to ruin it with bad lyrics. Five more from the usual suspects: 6. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan (#2) 7. Sunshine Superman - Donovan (#1) 8. Eight Miles High - The Byrds (#14) 9. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones (#1) 10. Paperback Writer - The Beatles (#1) Hardly any overlap with the listography crew. Kramzer had a couple of my top 10, Jason had one.

"Boots" was released as a single in December of '65 in the US, but didn't chart until January of '66. I probably wouldn't have thought to include "Hey Joe" in '66. It was released as a single in the U.K. in December of '66, but not until May of 1967 in the US. Joe must've been a British person in his past life, or he was just really excited to include a song with his name in the title.

HM - Chris Farlowe - Under My Thumb (at least a hint at the Stones...), Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You, Johnny Rivers - Secret Agent Man, Eddie Floyd - Knock on Wood, Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City 5. Love - Seven and Seven Is (2:15 teeange frustration, no chorus, ending in an explosion, garage rock in a nutshell, covered by everybody who lived in that tradition - and even some that did not...) 4. Monkees - I'm a Believer (written by Neil Diamond, the best version of it was released in 1974 as a single by no other than Robert Wyatt - that version even entered the UK charts...) 3. Sam & Dave - Hold On I'm Coming (As a young girl I wondered if it meant what I thought it meant...anyway, written by Isaac Hayes, backed by Booker T & the MGs and horns from the Mar-Keys, this was Stax at its best.) 2. 13th Floor Elevators - You’re Gonna Miss Me (Roky Erickson's debut, weird but brilliant like everything he recorded, vocals inspired by Little Richard, an amplified jug and garage rock 'n roll, or in one word - psychedelic.) 1. James Brown - It's a Man's World (...but it wouldn't be nothing, nothing/Without a woman or a girl.)

Beatles vs Stones. Never more apparent than in 1966. My initial list contained 5 Stones songs, 3 Beatles and 2 Donovan. After repeated plays, this is how it shakes out: Top 100 Charts: 1. Paint it Black - Rolling Stones 2. Sunshine Superman - Donovan 3. 19th Nervous Breakdown - Rolling Stones 4. Last Train to Clarksville - Monkees 5. These Boots are Made for Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra Wildcards 1. Tomorrow Never Knows - Beatles 2. Mother's Little Helper - Rolling Stones 3. Substitute - The Who 4. Season of the Witch - Donovan 5. Rainy Day Women #12 and 35 - Bob Dylan Song of the Year: Tomorrow Never Knows Paint it Black cheated a little. I could not separate the single from the incredible live performance the Stones did in the Steel Wheels tour. It was an unexpected highlight of the show for me, which forever elevated the song in my rankings.

I think from here until the early 70s is my favourite run for music. I'm counting like 100 songs at this point that I would want to give a shoutout to. We're just on the cusp of psychedelia now, and I quite like how it's just bubbling under the surface in a lot of the big songs around this time. Billboard Songs 1. *Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones #1* (The most innovative of their big songs, and among my personal favourites. Gateway song for me to 60s music.) 2. *Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys #1* (One of the most iconic progressive pop songs of all-time. In truth the modular style has never been my preference, but it's undeniable here.) 3. *Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles #11* (More brilliant songwriting from Paul, and the incredible strings!) 4. *I Want You by Bob Dylan (#20)* (Maybe the most poppy Dylan would ever get in his prime, and I love it!) 5. *Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys #8* (Top class melody, vocals, production. The sunshine pop/coming-of age aspects really help bridge the gap between what preceded and the rest of Pet Sounds.) Wildcard Songs 1. *WINNER: God Only Knows by The Beach Boys (#39)* (The guys already have the praise on this covered. For me it's all about that swirling fade which could go for minutes longer and I wouldn't mind one bit.) 2. *Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones* (Surely pushing up against that line with the lyrics, but I'm partial to take it as a character narrative. Cannot resist the marimba. One of their best album cuts.) 3. *Let's Go Away for Awhile by The Beach Boys* (A short journey, but you really get to take in all the beautiful details of the production on this Pet Sounds instrumental.) 4. *Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground & Nico* (A short twinkling lullaby. Eschews going as far down their experiment path while also sounding nothing quite like anything else at the time, which is right up my alley.) 5. *7 and 7 Is by Love (#33)* (Heavy, unrelenting, and just over two minutes! Garage psych with shades of punk and surf rock too.) WORST: The Ballad of the Green Berets by SSgt Barry Sadley #1 Plodding, lame, ridiculously uninteresting, and the biggest seller of the year. To think this held both the Beatles and Rolling Stones off the top spot. At least the Mike Douglas song, another one I considered, kind of sounds like it belongs in some kind of musical of the time. It could have been worse had Johnny Rebel's white supremacist singles charted.

There was so much I ended up leaving off especially trying to stick to one song per artist but nothing wrong with having lots of great songs to listen to while making the list! Many on your lists were serious contenders that just missed ("Reach Out I'll Be There", "Paint It, Black", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or really any song off Pet Sounds honestly, "California Dreaming"). Anyway, here's my list. Hot 100: - Love - 7 and 7 Is - The Byrds - Eight Miles High - Stevie Wonder - Uptight (Everything's Alright) - The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love Wildcard: -Otis Redding - Just One More Day - The Ugly Ducklings - Nothin' - The Beatles - For No One - The Rolling Stones - As Tears Go By - Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Comin' Worst: Gonna go with the obvious one too ("The Ballad of the Green Berets"), checked out a bunch of other crappy songs but nothing was as bad as that. My #1 is also "God Only Knows". What else is there to say?

66 is a big year for my development as a musician because of Freak Out! by the Mothers of Invention. it's also the beginning of my favorite period of the Who. interesting to hear Jason remark how he hates the psychedelic phase of pop music. this is a pretty rich year for psych groups that I still love today. 5. "Mother's Little Helper" - Rolling Stones (those twin 12-strings that sounded like sitar!) 4. "Who Are the Brain Police?" - Mothers of Invention (deeply disturbing, the way I like it!) 3. "Season of the Witch" - Donovan (great song! so many bands covered it in the 60s) 2. "7 and 7 Is" - Love (the energy level of that track is seismic!) 1. "Disguises" - The Who (I've learned to play this and "Happy Jack" on guitar because they're awesome songs) some of the psych groups I love debuted this year like 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Love...this was also the beginning of Jefferson Airplane, and an important psych single by the Byrds ("8 Miles High")

I think we've hit the motherlode here. I think my 11-20 might be stronger than my top 10 of just a couple of years before. As previously these all made the UK Top 50 this year: God Only Knows - The Beach Boys Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles It's a Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown* Eight Miles High - The Byrds Reach Out I'll be There - The 4 Tops California Dreaming - The Mamas and the Papas Paint it, Black - The Rolling Stones** When a Man Loves a Woman _ Percy Sledge River Deep Mountain High - Ike and Tina Turner * Proof that I'm prepared to overlook rather dated lyrical sentiments when the music is fantastic ** Proof that I'm prepared to overlook very bad grammar when the music is fantastic River Deep Mountain High may have only got to number 88 on the Hot 100 but it was number 3 in the UK and got to number 1 in Spain. Generalisimo Francisco Franco's thoughts on the latter are not on record but I know he is still dead.

Am I boring? Maybe, but these are my honest Top 10 songs of 1966. Overall, probably the strongest year of the 60s. Charting songs: 5. The Beach Boys - Sloop John B 4. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations 3. The Beach Boys - Wouldn’t it be Nice 2. Brian Wilson - Caroline, No [Better than the album version, because it doesn’t feature the strange ending with the train.] Wildcards: 5. The Beach Boys - You Still Believe in Me [Listen to the vocals only version of this. Fantastic.] 4. The Beach Boys - Let’s go away for a while [Probably the last instrumental that will be on any of my SOTY lists. As I said before, imo the best instrumental song ever made.] 3. The Beach Boys - I’m Waiting for the Day 2. The Beach Boys - Here Today [I wonder if ‘Eye of the Tiger’ was inspired by this song’s bridge.] 1. The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn’t Made for these Times [Sometimes, I feel very sad as well.] SONG OF THE YEAR 1966: The Beach Boys - God Only Knows [Not my favorite song of all time, but long as there are stars above us…okay just kidding. Top 10 song of all time for me.] If you think I completely ignored other artists, here’s some songs that are also great from 1966, but didn’t make the cut: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby [This song has a special feel to it.] The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows [Such a futuristic song. I love it.] The Beatles - Rain The Mothers of Invention - Motherly Love The Mothers of Invention - Wowie Zowie The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black The Who - Boris the Spider [Really strange song, but also really good.]

An incredible year in which I couldn't even fit a single song from my favorite album of all time. 1) The Beach Boys - "God Only Knows" - Wanted to put this #2, but I just couldn't do that to you all. 2) The Byrds - "Eight Miles High" - Months after "Turn x3," they completely transfigured their sound. Amazing songwriting from Gene, visionary Coltrane-Ravi influence from Dave, amazingly disorienting guitar work from McGuinn, fantastic drumming from the Brian Jones look-alike, and then there's that bass-line. And those ghostly harmonies. Y'all are extreme haters that this wasn't in your lists. One of the most ground-breaking singles of all time. 3) The Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations" - An incredible musical achievement. 4) The Walker Brothers - "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" - Cheers to Bob Gaudio, but this version is beyond definitive. Immortal. 5) The Yardbirds - "Happenings Ten Years' Time Ago" - Another visionary single. The high point of the all-too-brief Beck-Page period. 6) The Four Tops - "Reach Out I'll Be There" - So galvanizing. 7) The Beatles - "Rain" - That guitar sound, that melody, that bass playing, that drumming... 8) The Beach Boys - “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” - Had to edit my list to include this, perhaps Brian’s best arrangement ever. Apologies to Stevie for knocking him out of the top 10... 9) The Association - "Cherish" - I get that people hate this, but it's a fantastic record. 10) The Beatles - "Paperback Writer" - The best Beatles guitar sound in '66, and that's saying something. Honorable mentions - Virtually everything from Revolver, "Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” by Stevie Wonder, “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" by Them, The Leaves' "Hey Joe," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle."

I agree with Joe about Hendrix being underrated as a vocalist. Apparently he hated his voice but I always thought he sounded cool. Songs I would add- Over Under Sideways Down( The Yardbirds) great stinging riff by my favourite guitarist Jeff Beck, Mother's Little Helper (Rolling Stones) but for best of the year Tommorow Never Knows (The Beatles) a groundbreaker that I would say is far more influential than anything else recorded this year.

California Dreamin' is pleasant and obviously made a big impact in America (did well in Canada too), critics love it. Nice mellow sound, the brief break is functional enough. Feels a bit repetitive. But I think there's a strong argument that Monday Monday is actually much better. The melody extends nicely and there's a good livelier section that offers a striking contrast. Overall it's more of a journey.
@billslocum98193 жыл бұрын
Prince seemed to favor "Monday Monday" on his "1999" as a kind of aural footprint, like he did with another 1966 hit, Neil Hefti's "Batman Theme," on "Batdance." On 1999, the famous opening riff follows "Monday Monday" closely. It's an open question whether its intentional homage or not.

I could reasonably put nothing but Beatles and Dylan and Beach Boys songs on my list, and that wouldn't be fun, so, to give myself a challenge, I have come up with a top ten in which no artist can appear more than once (thus, perversely, no "God Only Knows"!). 10 "California Dreamin'," The Mamas and the Papas 9 "Summer Wind," Frank Sinatra 8 "Wild Is the Wind," Nina Simone 7 "When a Man Loves a Woman," Percy Sledge 6 "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," Bob Dylan 5 "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," The Temptations 4 "Summer in the City," The Lovin' Spoonful 3 "Walk Away Renee," The Left Banke 2 "Caroline, No," The Beach Boys 1 "And Your Bird Can Sing," The Beatles

Still surprised that no one even mentioned “I Fought the Law,” the epitome of a great rock and roll single. Replace Joe’s 4 Tops song with The Bobby Fuller 4.

Really enjoy the playlist for listening to all the selections. My only criticism would be too heavy on Stones, Beatles and Beach Boys. I'd slim those picks down and insert equally good songs by Kinks, Hollies and Lovin Spoonful. There is one song on the list I never understood its popularity. That would be "River Deep, Mountain High". By the time this song came out, the Specter wall of sound was losing steam and this just doesn't seem like a recording that matches his earlier recordings.
@NaughtyVampireGod3 жыл бұрын
I think the point is to list your FAVORITE songs - not a representive sampling of what was great for any particular year. There are plenty of music journals you can turn to for such lists. This should be something different.
@ijeff20053 жыл бұрын
@@NaughtyVampireGod Well, all these lists are subjective unless based on actual chart performance and sales. Its hard to argue with the quality of songs on each of their lists. With such a short list it would be difficult to pick a bad song. I'm just surprised at how much they included 3rd or 4th best songs from those groups above songs from other artists.
@NaughtyVampireGod3 жыл бұрын
@@ijeff2005 Sometimes you can address that issue by putting more songs on an honorable mention list. That's what I do. For me it just depends on how I am reacting to the song right now. For 66 I notice that each of my chart top 5 and wildcard top 5 lists have all different artists, yet The Rolling Stones and Simon and Garfunkel appear on both lists. An obvious indication that both bands were really connecting with me.
@ijeff20053 жыл бұрын
@@NaughtyVampireGod I also wonder if my perspective is different because I lived during 1966 and heard all these songs fresh when they were first released. Hence, a song like "Kicks" had a greater impact on me than "Lady Jane" or "Under My Thumb". This doesn't mean Paul Revere and the Raiders is even close to being at the level of the Rolling Stones looking back at 50 years of history. Those 2 RS songs wouldn't even be in my top 20 favorite Stones songs. I'm pretty sure the Listography guys weren't alive back in 1966. I continue to be amazed at the depth of their music knowledge and the thoughtfulness that goes into their analysis. Very refreshing. I also like that they don't just focus on a specific music genre like heavy metal, prog, etc. They just focus on great music.
@NaughtyVampireGod3 жыл бұрын
@@ijeff2005 Possibly age is a factor but not decisive, imo. As long as you actively search for music that you enjoy, when/where you were born really should not be a major factor. I wasn't around in 66, but it's one of my favorite years. I discovered Paul Revere and the Raiders after the fact, but they were a top 10 band for me on one of my earliest lists. Even today (for 1966) I have two of their songs as HM on my charts list and one on the wildcard list, in the #3 position: Kicks, Hungry, and Good Thing, respectively. The Boys, whatever their ages (safe to say they were not here in 1966), are active explorers of good music - that's obvious. Era doesn't really matter it seems.
