I think the time had came to an end to Indie Rock, the same as happened to Britpop, Grunge, Hard Rock and all rock genres that were mainstream at some point. If stop to think, Last really BIG band was Arctic Monkeys, and their peak of popularity was at 10 years ago. And there's no problem on that. The problem is what you told on the video: there are no Rock scene to suceed the Indie Rock scene, and this created an anomaly where artists that were mainstream at 10 or 20 years ago have to keep on the stage carrying "Rock'n Roll's dead body". This happens much because of social media trending that influences people to listen to only the "local moment genre". Here in Brazil (where i live), this same phenomenon happened praticcally at the late 2000's. At time we just came from two decades of great Alternative Rock artists on 90's and 00's. We had Skank, Los Hermanos, Raimundos, Charlie Brown Jr. that are some of our greatest rock bands of all time. But as the social media exploded (mainly with facebook) young people just stopped to give a chance to new rock bands, and started to listen only to local popular genres as Funk and Sertanejo. The problem wasn't even that we weren't getting new great Rock bands, but that they were being completed ignorated, and being put on an certain "underground status" that wasn't common until then. Also If you look to the USA perspective, we can say that the same happened, and Rock music also had "died" there a long time ago, giving mainstream space only to Rap and Pop artists. I think this phenomenon is happening "just by now" at the UK, only because Rock music is a genre originated on the country, and you had that extra gas as the original factory of the Rock culture. To sum up, I really hope that some day soon, an great UK Rock band appear out there and get to achieve mainstream world-wide sucess again, the same as Arctic monkeys did back then, because, unfortunatelly, that's the only way I see a new scene of Rock artists appearing on the rest of the world, and keeping the Rock'n Roll torch lit.

Very thoughtful piece. Recently saw the Foo Fighters in Boston. They and The Hives were on fire--so was the crowd. They know how to deliver music and excitement and a sense of community to the fans. We need the up and coming artists to hit the road and learn by experience how to dazzle the people. In the past year, there has been so much touring activity from artists older than Dave Grohl--the Rolling Stones, Metallica, U2, Paul McCartney, but looking out for the new groups.

We still have The 1975, they're still young enough. I'm not worried about running out rock bands, there will be new ones. Besides, rock won't sound the same as it used to. That's the point of rock anyway, to break the norm.

Never knew you were from Stockport too. Blossoms are the one export we’ve got in music atm. I’m concerned about the future of there being new bands which really break through. If I clutch at straws, I’d say from the last 10 years we at least have Royal Blood and Nothing But Thieves who are almost if not already at the point of headlining some of these big festivals. As for the EU thing, I have a feeling we’ll end up rejoining anyway in a few years time when the time is right. I agree but I also think covid and the reaction to it doesn’t get enough of the blame. One thing I hate is how most young people now tend to hear music in terms of a ‘track’ or ‘beat’ rather than as a ‘song’. I used to go busking a fair bit and found it really fulfilling to do. I’ve got a good computer and equipment and wanted to start making my own stuff but I don’t know where to begin to be honest. I hate the idea of heavily editing something I recorded. I agree the government should do more but it’s always been the case that the first thing to get cut in a crisis is support for the arts.

Ye man I was born and raised in Offerton - moved to LDN for work after uni - all the best music comes out of Manchester! Not to get too political but yeah I agree tbh - I’m not a fan of ‘protectionism’ - can only be a win being part of a greater power. And yeah I feel like music in general is under threat with the rise of podcasts as there’s now competition for your attention in this space also. I have vids on Logic Pro and getting started with music production on my channel if you fancy a watch - could be helpful! I’ll be making more stuff on getting started at home so look out for those!

@@jonathanmarkham1998 With track and beat music do you think with the increase in TikTok’s popularity, ‘catchy’ songs have become the norm decreasing the demand for indie riffs and baselines.

@@donnyboi4743 Not sure I buy into this idea that the general public are anymore a fan of catchiness now than they always were. In fact if anything I find the choruses of most pop songs I hear now less catchy than those of even 10 years ago. At least growing up in the late 2000s and early 2010s, songs would still get stuck in my head, even if I didn’t really like them much.

@@donnyboi4743 this is true they are all great bands but given the way things are both in the industry and financially for musicians and bands these days, I’m quite pessimistic about the future of bands… I really want to be more optimistic about it but I think atm the odds are stacked against up and coming bands

@@sanjaypanchalmusicLike Alex Turner said in his Brits speech Rock and Roll always returns from the sludge. Music like all things follows trends and although changes such as brexit restrictions has made it more difficult to go abroad, many bands such as oasis and AM made their names in England before tapping into the other market. I feel rock has more longevity and it’s just a matter of time before a killer act appears from the sludge.

@@jonathanmarkham1998I agree that these aren’t the star studded names of old. However Wunderhorse and Fontaines experimentation with newer sounds opens the doors for a larger group to fill in. I enjoyed the Royston Club when I saw them in London earlier this year and though their album to be consistent, it comes down to a matter of opinion.
