Our First 5990! But is the Market Crashing? | CRM Life #13

We're a bit worried about the watch market. Are we seeing the calm before the storm? There definitely appears to be something cooking! But...
The good news is that we finally got our first one. Yes, our first Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990, the Jefe of Jefes! During CRM Life #12, you saw Charlie make this deal happen when he set up between Boston watch dealer Danny Prenda and his dad in Bimini. Yes, we traded our Richard Mille RM67-02 Alexander Zverev edition, but the reality is that the watch had been stuck in our inventory for over a month with no takers. While in a market environment that appears to be slowing down, overloading on RMs that don't sell might not be the best plan of attack.
Watch Charlie give you a close up tour of the 5990 from his desk. Even Dan gets to nervously try it on!
Some unboxings, client deals, and interesting phone calls like always, as well as a cameo appearance from our next CRM team member, Sandy! She's Dan's wife and plans to join the team soon to launch our new e-commerce website. Charlie allows Sandy to shadow him during some calls.

First off that 5990 is the absolute best watch hands down in my humble opinion. Now for the funny part you got people calling in trying to sell their watches retail to retail lol. It’s looking like 2007-08 real estate market correction but in the watch market now. The bubble has burst it seems and it’s about time for a correction. Now it’s time to see what dealers are still going to be around after the bottom drops out. It’s obvious you guys are here to stay especially in my own backyard. I have to be honest though JR Dunn is my AD and has been for many many years. The industry lost a very well respected guy RIP Jim your truly going to be missed. Keep up the great videos by the way.

Another question...Do you think that a Rolex 3230 movement (one year old) should gain +5 seconds one day after winding? Or is that cause for concern based on the -2/+2 per second spec for this movement?

I think I figured it out. If I don't wind the watch it keeps time within about 1 second per day which is awesome. However if I wind the watch it throws it off by about +5 seconds. Intersting. I never knew that winding would have an effect like that. Thoughts?

Backpack watch dealers must be sweating right now! The watch market is starting to have a correction for a few reason 1. No more PPP and Stimulis money 2. Rolex has started delivering more Inventory. So probably a 10-20% correction on pricing is coming

Same plan as when it tanked in 2008 (even though we weren't around at that time), same time as when it tanked during the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, etc. What many people seem to not realize is that the period we're going through has some unique characteristics. What the Fed and other central banks have done and continue to do is something new. That is the main culprit behind abnormal prices in many commodities and assets. It's new territory. Many people were calling for the destruction of the luxury watch market during the first quarter of 2020. Look at what actually happened.

I think some of these flippers getting burned buying watches they can’t move will help soften the market and help dealer margins again. Grey dealers are rarely buying stock from ADs, it’s flippers who want to buy a sea dweller and flip it right away. Let a few guys get stuck with a watch they don’t want and the whole market will start to settle down. If a dealer has to pay $12k on a sub to make $1k but used to be able to make that same $1k on an $9k investment, their margins have gotten squeezed. Good luck CRM.

As I said this to you before the inflation in the Watch market was linked a lot to crypto and now crypto has had a huge retrace watches start to flatten off and even reduce prices .. the correlation is there to be seen!... I’ve spoke to many watch dealers during the surge in prices and all said the clientele was of a younger demographic hence Crypto 🤷‍♂️

Even if they would use stablecoins to pay, which we accept, we would count that as a crypto transaction, but the reality is that crypto transactions still make up a very small fraction of our entire orders.

Guy invested close to 90K (or whatever retail is) to make some profit, what’s wrong with shopping around to maximize on it? It’s not like he got business/personal relationship with either one of them. Or if he would commit to one of them and then try to back out of the deal for more money that’s wrong but initially doing your homework trying to get top dollar seems normal. Same as you or me as an end consumer shopping around before the purchase to get best deal

@@stevenlin1615 Not even close, first off the guy doesn't have the watch. He didn't "invest anything" 99% of the snakes trying to play the watch game the last couple yrs don't own anything. Listen closely, "Its going to come". He doesn't have the watch in hand and why do you think CRM won't quote prices anymore? You think they stopped because a bunch of "good businessmen" are trying to do honest business with them? Obviously you've never dealt with watch snakes before. They're one tier above selling snake oil. Trust me, the CRM Fam know what I'm talking about, they won't say it because they're in the biz but I'll say it for them.

@@autismawareness8912 whether he purchased the watch already or will once he “pre sells” it still means he will invest money at some point in order to complete the transaction because obviously he won’t get funded upfront. Going back on what he’s doing, yes 1000% it’s annoying to deal with stuff like that but you can ask CRM or any other business owner it’s PART OF DOING BUSINESS. Same happens in my business (automotive), I’m not sure why people have expectations that clients (especially first time without any prior relationship) should be loyal, understand etc…they have no feelings/connections to the business same as you as a business owner have none for them. I own used car dealerships and clients call us all the time while shopping with 5,10 places for $500, but it is what it is. Only thing you can do as a business owner either tell your staff fight for each deal or take position like CRM where you can let them go. Neither one approach is wrong, they’re just different and of course depends how well the business is doing. I can almost guarantee any starting business will fight or at least should fight for each client until they grow to the point when they can pass on “annoying” deals without hurting their button line. Now looks like CRM is in a great position so they can afford to do that and good job to them and best of luck!!!
