That cooked rice thing, in Indonesia, we call it ketupat, from coconut leaves. We make and have them on special occasion, mostly on "lebaran" (when we finish the month of Ramadhan)

History and context matter as the world moves forward in time. Ignorance assures conflict, learning what has happened in the past ( the actors and their schemes) has the promise of avoiding future conflict.
@RidingOnEggshells2 жыл бұрын
Liss: Context is especially important. It is very easy to look at what happened in Timor Leste and think this was due to evil intentions from the outset. But if you try to understand the thinking at the time, you can begin to understand the actions even if you do not agree with them, and even if the outcome is not what anyone hoped for. As they say, the past is another country where they do things differently.

Crazy how all the memorise of my trip are flooding back as i watch yours. Oh the glorious border crossings and the heat haha. The culture, food, people of Timor Leste are the same as in Indonesia. Because in the past Timor Leste was a part of a province in Indonesia but there was a country that wanted to control oil in the province of East Timor (Timor Leste) by means of propaganda, between Indonesia and the people of East Timor for independence from Indonesia.
@RidingOnEggshells2 жыл бұрын
I think that's a complex topic about which it would be hard to be both accurate and confident. The Portuguese colonisation for one, made many East Timorese feel they weren't Indonesian. The people and food are also, I think, quite different too. And they weren't part of Indonesia until Indonesia invaded. While I'm in two minds about whether becoming a part of Indonesia would be good for the people and their local identity and prosperity, I think it's funny to say what you have as if the only reason to disagree is to have read and believed the propaganda, when it looks like you've just read and believed the propaganda from the other side.
@maksumzaifudin58592 жыл бұрын
@@RidingOnEggshells What I learned when I was in school about Timor Leste's independence from the unitary state of the republic of Indonesia was because of the propaganda of a country that wanted to control oil in Timor Leste.Everyone may have a different opinion but we Indonesians believe in this story.

@@maksumzaifudin5859 you would understand once you broaden your horizon, our education system didn't tell the whole truth about the wrongdoing, same thing like Japanese or Dutch education system try to prefer not telling about their wrongdoing history in their education system. Not to mention anti communism still pretty strong in Indonesia since this whole thing started during cold war era under US propaganda to fight communism with CIA role appointed Suharto to overthrown Sukarno to wipe out communism. Then the whole story pretty much like what Liss & Harry said in their videos. There's plenty documents that revealed the truth about it, you might try to read Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins, or watch award winning documentary The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence.
