We're no strangers to conventions, and have been regulars at gaming and pop culture events for over a decade, but we've never been to a Lego convention before, so we figured it was time! This is a vlog from the National Brick Events show in Coventry in April 2024, with us hunting for rare and retired Lego sets, in particular retired modular buildings for our Lego city. We didn't plan on a £500 haul going in, but it turns out there was some good stuff at the show...

I watched your recent Brick Fest Live video and clicked on this one just for comparison. Despite wanting Legos as a kid, I've never actually owned any, so I'm not a collector in any way, shape, or form, and I think I still would have had a blast at this convention. The difference between this & BFL is mind-boggling. Thank you for sharing both experiences.

I think the stand with the reasonably priced shrink wrapped sets was Iain’s Bricks. If so, he’s totally transparent about what he paid for sets. He posts KZbin videos about his acquisitions all the time. Highly recommend his YT channel.

Totally agree with the comment that the vendors are hiking up the prices of the retired sets. Just because they are retired doesn’t mean they are rare. Best to look around for preloved sets with a few pieces missing and buy any missing parts needed to complete the set. Much better value for money.

The stall at time 15:01 is Brick Bros the guys run a lovely little market stall full of Lego every Saturday near where I live. They are fab as they raise money for Great Ormond st

Convention prices are notoriously over inflated, you’ll very rarely find a bargain there you won’t find cheaper on eBay or similar - there’s definitely some price gouging going on. Edit: nailed it with the comment about shopping at the end of the day to save money though, also, don’t be afraid to barter, or ask for a deal on a multi buy and offer cash if you can.

Managed to pick up the same droid in GAME for £72. Definitely worth checking your local from time to time as they had a couple of retired sets.

Hi, I just happened across this video after watching your brickfest live video. What a disappointment the brickfest show looked glad I didn’t go. Anyway onto this video… my family and I were in it. We were running the raffle stall with the yellow Liebherr crane on it. I am wondering it you had a go at winning it ? If you see us at another show come over and say hello. We were raising money for the National Autistic Society and did quite well. Thanks.

I will be at Walsall as a trader next week. I used to do Brick Festivals, but they were overbooked and over priced. I only do this as a hobby to fund my Lego addiction, and to clear out any old sets I don't have room for. Some traders are insulting buyers with the prices, you will always pay a little more, but some are ridiculous.

It's bloody expensive to have trade tables at these conventions, that's why prices for sets are so expensive

As a seller at some of these events. I would always look at the smaller stalls for better prices. They have a show in Lincoln in June

If you're planning to build these sets just buy second hand. Most of these high prices will be down to box condition as some people love to keep sets boxed and sealed and any scuff/crease etc will devaule and people will pay a premium for mint boxes. FB marketplace and eBay bundles are your best bet for bargains, especially if you don't mind near complete sets as spares are readily available.

We're on holiday for that one, but we're planning on going to the Peterborough Brick Festival in June and another National Brick Event in Northampton in July. Might even head down to to the Reading Brick Show later this month because that seems like a big one.

i went to a similar convention last year around May in Liverpool. Found the same inflated prices like you did. I have one retired modular. I picked up the Corner Garage from Amazon for about £240. I know I payed over the odds put I've always been a bit afraid to buy off ebay. I did get a retired yellow lego truck from around 2010 off bricklink which worked out okay for me. I have my eye on the Brick Bank and the Downtown Diner to add to my collection at some stage.

You are much better off with the shows organised by LUGs rather than commercial ones. Usually more models and builders based than sellers but they do have sellers that are much more reasonably priced.

You would think they’d be open to offers there too since most things are cheaper on eBay and they’re going to lose money selling online with eBay and PayPal fees.

Good to see you at the convention! I recognised you from KZbin from your FM series! It’s always an interesting thing around pricing at these places. As one of the sellers at these events I tend to set my prices around current online prices since nowadays most people have the technology in their hands to quickly do a price check! Now that I know you are into Lego you tick 2 of my hobbies !

I had the Lego Simpsons house when it first came out, built it then gave it to a friends children. Kicking myself now after hearing the price they’re going for 😢

Yeah, all the Simpsons stuff is worth loads now. Even just the minifigs from that set are probably worth more now than what the set originally retailed for!

It varies. Only one vendor today was cash only, so we just avoided looking at them!

That's a good buy. I think it comes with a BD-1 mini figure that people will be after now that Lego has released a Cal Kestis one with the incoming new Star destroyer set. Enjoying the channel and your city progress. Great stuff! 👍

I went here with my daughter, arrived at 10am. My expectations sadly were not met. Thought all sets were overpriced and have to agree with you in that they’re trying to catch people who don’t know values. For anyone in attendance a quick google search would’ve shown how overpriced the sets were. Disappointing

Just started back with Lego as I stopped some 45 years ago but since my stroke I was looking for something to help with my damaged hand as Lego which is so frustrating but helps with control and pressure. So I don’t have the problem with expensive sets yet otherwise I’d have people complaining I’m wasting benefit cash . So I’m only smaller boxes. I do enjoy the pictures on the boxes from a pop culture point but they have to go . But again there’s no right or wrong. Just been learning about mils plates just in the case of me getting a wish for a city one day.
