I just recently got quoted between 800 and 1300 for a brake job on my 2001 Subaru Legacy. I spent a little time on KZbin university. Watch a number of videos and managed to do the job myself for 73 dollars. Thank you so much for the informative education on self maintenance and self reliance. Having relied on KZbin for instruction I know how valuable this will be to me and others. Best wishes to both of you. And as always, thank you for let us have a small window into your world.

Tip from someone who deals with oily machinery all the time. Get the good quality medical exam gloves. Cost a bit more but worth every penny as they don't split unless they come into contact with something sharp. If you're going to be dealing with things mucky as well as things you want to keep muck-free (like a computer, phone, getting into a door, etc.), double up and then you can easily take the outer layer off and get a new one on easily without the sweaty hand problem.

Doubling up gloves is essential for every time in the engine! Thanks for the tip about the medical gloves.

@@TheNarrowboatExperience Just remember that under all the fancy switches and electronics, it's just an engine. If you think of the sensors as switches, I find that helps. Just have to think on what it's there for. It's surprisingly easy to find your way around them when you ask yourself what is it doing? Looking at your engine Kath, do you carry spare drive belts and morse cables ? Funny thing is , my middle daughter will quite happily help me service and repair cars whilst my son just thinks its dirty and grimy so call dad 😅

If you can find them, the black gloves are designed for automotive technicians, they stand up a little better than the blue gloves. A bilge mat is a great idea and in a pinch, disposable diapers work to sop up any spillage. Also, if you can find them, (or make them up) a fire extinguisher service tag on each filter lets you note when you changed oil, filters or gearbox oil. because you'll never remember when you did it last.

Well done Kath. Keep the waste oil, it's the best rust protection for your boat or car. Or, use it for lighting the fire. Also if it's a conventional diesel engine (not common rail) it's sometimes a good idea to use a diesel flush. When changing the fuel filter, fill it up with the diesel flush. Start the engine at full throttle, and it will clean the injectors. I've done it regularly on my Clio I've had for 18 years, and no injector problems.

Plan your next service and moor up next to a marina with an oil disposal point then you can get rid of the old oil and used filters etc straight away. The marinas are probably the most expensive place to buy your oils and filters but if you have a usable address for Amazon or eBay you can save money if you plan ahead Good video, well done..

You can cut down on more mess with the spin-on oil filters using the used gloves. With the glove on pick up the oil filter by the open end - like picking up animal waste. Remove the glove over the open end of the filter and slide around. Recycling company won't be too keen probably, but keeps the drippage to a minimum.

I realise there is no alternative on your boat but I hate those oil drain pumps. You never quite get it all and the sludge stays in the bottom of the sump plus you can't check for chips and shavings (which also stay in the sump). May I recommend that every year or so you have a sample of your oil analysed? The oil companies or a large diesel service company can do this for you and it checks for contaminants and traces of bearing metal etc from which you can tell an awful lot about the condition of your engine and possibly head off expensive repairs or at least budget for them before something breaks. Probably already been said down the page but it's a good idea to fill up oil/fuel filters before installing them, in the case of the oil filter it reduces the amount of time the bearings run dry before oil pressure comes up and with the fuel filters it makes bleeding a lot easier. Does that motor have hydraulic tappets or does the valve clearance need to be set at service? PS: Maybe not show draining what looks like red diesel out of your engine filters in future? 😁
