RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.

Bill Bruford who is a big friend of Phil Collins once said that Phil could do anything, even sound like Billy Cobhan and this is what he was talking about. Phil is a monster of a drummer.

Phil's solo career overshadowed the fact that he's one of THE greatest drummers of all time... Phil always played to serve the song. And to clear up a misconception, Phil did not "Turn" Genesis to be more popular, it was Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks who decided collectively with Phil to go in that more simplified "poppier" direction. Brand X were/are brilliant, they're still together (without Phil) and they still bring the fusion goods.

People confuse Phil’s love of the Beatles and especially Motown with simplifying Genesis. That really lies squarely on Rutherford’s shoulders even more than Banks. Notice how Phil went on tour with Peter when he went solo? If Peter would’ve stuck with anyone it would be Phil.

Cool background story on how Phil ended up on Eno's albums. Gabriel brought in Eno for a listen while Genesis were recording the Lamb and Pete had Eno "ennosify" his vocals here and there. When they asked Eno how much for your services, Eno said...give me that Phil dude in trade in my studio. I guess he knew talent when he saw it.

Ugh! That was SO AWESOME!! OMG! You guys have the best Reaction show! Your choice of music is so fantastic! I've been a fan of Brand X (and, of course, Genesis) since the later part of the '70's, thanks to all the great albums my brothers were listening to! They were into Genesis, King Crimson, Hendrix, Rush, Yes, Brand X, RTF, Gong, Gentile Giant, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Zeppelin and the list goes on! So I was blessed to be turned on to that music pretty early on. My favorite Brand X album is their Live album called "Livestock". It's basically an EP, since it was only a single disc offering, but it gives you a great introduction to the band. Great fusion, you all! Thank you! Hey, also don't forget about Genesis, live, "The Musical Box" (1973, audio only)!

Nick, Same here, always heard of them and a band called "Be Bop Deluxe". I know Phil was on the original line-up (Brand X), and I may have heard 2 tracks (this may be 1 of them?). I LOVE the beginning of this track (this may be the only LP I have of them, but its in "storage" with most of my Lp and CD collection). One of those albums I never got around to. Loving the sound of the keyboards on the solo! Phil can jam, if he can do it live with Chester Thompson, he's capable of anything. (With hands on my hip, wagging my finger) For more Prog Rock/Prog Metal, go listen to the playlists I sent last month. You'll get to know some obscure/underground bands that I KNOW you will enjOy (no, really), and you may want to look into each band a bit more as reaction videos :D.

Andy Latimer is in the same league as Gilomore when it comes to play with feeling. Fun fact, Roger Waters auditioned him for a post-PF tour, but Andy Latimer didn't make it just because he didn't have the vocal range and RW wanted a guitar player who could sing.

Brand X were more of a collective, sort of a night band and day band while working on material. Bill Bruford was part of it as well, though Phil played on most early studio albums, there are live recordings with Bill. I used to have a monthly catch up beer with Robin Lumley when he relocated to Aus before passing away a few years ago. I resupplied Phil with an early studio live recording of the band they thought was lost for good...i think that's available now. Brilliant band, and Robin was great at producing them....and those creamy moog solos with trippy tape-echo...what can i say.

This was actually the first concert that I had been too in 1979. I had just arrived from Germany (from a small village) so no concerts. I made friends with some cool people - good musical taste Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull etc. So my friend literally had to drag me out to his show in Toronto. Very amazing to see Brand X with Phil Collins. My next how was Steve Hackett at the same Venue in 1980 and then Genesis in the summer of 1980. do you see a pattern???

Great reaction! Just to set things clear about Phil Collins and Genesis... He did not take Genesis on the path they went! Both Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks were informel leaders, maybe more Tony... Both were original members. Phil wanted to play more of the "old stuff" at tours but he was voted down. Of course the whole band developed in order to survive punk and later grunge and they really just did songs they wanted to do. Tony would not have it any other way. @@halcyon289 Yep, so many progressive bands attempted to move to more popular songs in the 80's and most failed and then migrated back to a smaller audience in their niche (which does have a good side to it of course). Genesis however discovered they could produce massively popular songs and rode that trip to one of the highest selling bands ever. Some of their concert sellout numbers were mindboggling. Sure, it may not have had the instrumental depth of the original 70's prog but I think for them it was a "we already did that and you can listen those albums all you want, we're onto something new...constantly".

Nick & Lex great job as usual. I want to say something about the Phil Collins critics who blame him for the direction the band took after Steve Hackett left the band. I being a major early Genesis fan (Up to Duke then things get real spotty ) I too became disenchanted with Genesis's direction, but then I heard an interview with Phil about those criticisms. He gave a very good answer that made sense and I've come to terms with the direction they went in. When asked about it he said that when the band was younger they were listening to different music than they listen to today (being older) so the music they now create reflects that. He added that we all listen to different music at different stages of our lives and I and the band members are no different in that respect. So there you go, an answer that I respect even if I don't like the music they have created since 1980. I hope that makes others take his words to heart and come to peace with it, I have. Keep up the great work and keep on loving each other.

Seeing them live with Phil Collins in 1979 was something I'll never forget! I would pay just to see Collins (drums), Jones (bass) and Pert (percussions) play by themselves let alone adding Goodsall on guitar and Lumley on keys. The soundtrack of my life is heavily influenced by Brand X and early Genesis!

brand x played at the glass onion after the rochester war memorial show in -79 ? ( I saw the Genesis but not the Brand X) I think brand x trailed Genesis on tour and Phil would play with them after a Genesis show - what a freking work a holic,

Before this band, guitarist John Goodsall played with Atomic Rooster, after Brand X he formed the group Fire Merchants. I have one of their songs on my list. Once Goodsall had to abandon a tour because he developed tendonitis from playing too fast.

I went to a concert of the George Duke Billy Cobham Band, with Brand X as the support band. I saw Phil Collins outside standing on his own, so I walked up to him and said, how come you're not on stage, as the concert started five minutes ago? He told me that he was only producing Brand X now, and that he had now replaced himself with Rick Parmell. Parnell became best known for playing the part of Mick Shrimpton, the drummer in the film of Spinal Tap.

Yes, yes yes!!! Brand X! Phil has developed his skills grace to Brand X. He used to call BrandX as his mistress compared to Genesis, his "regular" ;-) He was far more free to experiment and have fun with Brand X in a more loose concept ;-) John Goodsal : Guitars Phil Collins : Drums, percussions Percy Jones : Bass Robin Lumley : keyboards Now you're fan of jazz-rock-fusion from Brand X, you have plenty of jewels to enjoy, try all the albums from the first to "Is There Anything About?" (1982) One track I hugely suggest to you is "And so f…", from Phil mostly (he used to play it live on his first solo tours) And try "Livestock", a live album that gathers all the best first songs of Brand X in the live context which is AWESOME!

Very cool music! Reminiscent of some of the Chick Corea/Return to Forever, John McLaughlin, or Al DiMeola that I loved to listen to in the 70s, but I'd never heard this before. It's as if we discovered it together! I might recommend you look for an album with Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola for some virtuosity that is just . . . OUT THERE!

Phil Collins - Drums, John Goodsall - Guitar, Perc Jones - Fretless Bass, Robin Lumley - Keyboards. I pretty much have all their albums. "Do they Hurt" is fabulous, especially "Voidarama", "Cambodia", "Triumphant Limp" and "D.M.Z." One of my favourite Brand X songs is "Operation Hearts and Minds" from their last album "Manifest Destiny". John Goodsall is a great guitarist.

Yeah, I felt like I was transported by that. I think it's my first listen although I've heard Brand X before. That time period had such creativity zooming about. Speaking of Genesis have you listened to their piece Firth of Fifth yet? It's nothing like Brand X except for Phil Collins, but it has some extraordinary musicianship in progressive fashion. Cheers!

You can hear this fusion style drumming influencing Phil's work on Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Phil can play any style, anything really. (oh, Genesis was in big debt when Peter abandoned ship) Their first real hit (and money) came in 1978 with 'Follow You, Follow Me'. Debt gone!

Yeah, Phil and the bass player, Percy Jones played on Brian Eno's Another Green World. A very unique sounding record. Some of the pieces are like paintings with music. "Over Fire Island" is a good instrumental with the two of them. It really is a must hear album. Brand X had a couple different drummers cover for Phil Collins' commitment to Genesis, including Bill Bruford, who also provided percussion with Phil on an early tour (!). Brand X and Genesis had the same manager, Tony Smith. Collins left in 1980, busy with Genesis and his solo career. That same year Brand X and the band Bruford toured together. Percy Jones left the band in 2020, leaving John Goodsall the only remaining founding member.

Hi, you're playing some great tunes on your channel, particularly the 70s fusion. My all time favourite jazz rock band is Colosseum II. They are the ultimate instrumental band, members Inc Jon hiseman on drums and the fantastic Gary Moore on guitar. Please check out the wardance album from '77

Brand X is one of my favorite fusion bands from the 70s, if not my favorite. The band on this album was Phil Collins - Drums, Morris Pert - percussion, Percy Jones - bass, Robin Lumely - keys, John Goodsall - guitars. Malaga Virgin still one of my favorite tracks from them, they just burn on it. Some other prog/fusion/Jazz bands to check out: National Health Hatfield and the North Gong Aquarium Rescue Unit Tribal Tech Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express Chick Corea Elektric Band Jing Chi Happy The Man Michael Manring Oregon Project Z Steps Ahead The Dixie Dregs The Yellowjackets I guess I just need to copy and send you my entire contents of my 95 gig music folder from my hard drive.

Hi well what can I say - after all these years since being in my teens in the 70's loving prog rock with "Yes" "Genesis" & "Pink Floyd" along with rock groups like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath I never got into Brand X despite having albums by Al Di Meola & Billy Cobham......Till now....Yep, 3 months ago I bought my first ever Brand X cd and it's "Unorthodox Behaviour" would you believe ? & I love it ! - I have since bought "Livestock" but that's all I have at the moment....I intend to get more. I can't believe what I've been missing all these years while loving it now. Never too late eh ?

Now you are talking! This was an astonishing group that allowed Phil the ability to show his incredible drumming ability, and the rest of the band are insanely good also, with John Goodsall on guitar showing what a unique voice he had on the instrument! Got to say though, Goodsall does not sound like DiMeola or McLaughlin, he is literally one of a kind?! Over the years they have had many drummers, including Pierre Moerlen from Gong (who I saw live with them). Just check out their live album Livestock, although the drummer on that is Kenwood Dennard. The next track to listen to on this album is Running on Three, the guitar solo will melt your face!

Brand X did for some time have Pierre Moerlen as a drummer. He was incredible but sadly die May 3rd 2005 (so almost exactly 16 years ago). He was the drummer of Gong, a highly original progressive rock band that you should definitely check out. As a starter I recommend "Isle of Everywhere/You Never Blow Yr Trip Forever" (actually two songs played as one) from their 1974 album "You". Great rhythm section with Pierre on drums and Mike Howlett on bass, and Didier Malherbe on saxes and flute and Steve Hillage on guitar are fantastic too. Here a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoDLXq2spLhkqNk Pierre and Mike start simply but gradually complicate the stuff they play.
