I was shocked and saddened to realise we'd never had a mighty Suzuki DR650 featured on this channel before. Luke joins us for a tour of the Mary Valley & surrounds, and in usual MVDBR style the ride turns into a real adventure. A great day on the bikes with top company & plenty of laughs.

Love it! Great to see someone putting the big bush pig DR650 through its paces out there. Barry goes through phases when he forgets his European princesses and raves about how good the DR is. Someday I hope to find an XR650L or street-legalized XR650R to use for more dirt-oriented motocamping than what the Versys will do.

@@MVDBR Oh I have a much-modified CRF250L for the small-displacement adventuring when it's necessary to be road legal. It's almost but not quite set up to carry my camping gear. It's just anemic at highway speeds is all. The 650L with some mods would be a nice step up from that. And if road legality isn't an issue, I'm not against using the KDX220 to adventure on.

Sick DR. There's plenty options for a 17. But an aggressive one that size is essentially a rear tire, might be vibe city. I tried a D605 this summer. Both are slightly smaller dimensions than a d606. Marketed towards 250 bikes i think. Awesome dualsport tire. The rear was bald after 6000km. Front is still good for another season. I usually run k270 all round. I'll have to wait for spring to test the d605/k270 combo. That T660 is something you don't see every day👌

How Luke has his dr set up is how I wanna setup my xt660x, keep the sumo rims but add some 50/50 tyres so I can do some fire trails and light off reading. Although it looked like that front wheel was being a pain all day long haha.

Yeah T7 is a fucking great bike I love mine. 8 months I've owned it and in that time the 500EXC has come out of the shed maybe twice :) And the Tenere now has over 8,000kms on it

I have been looking and the DR650 is sold in Colombia new, model 2021. It is strange to see how in other markets this bike is still sold, it is still a great bike. In Europe we haven't seen it for 10 years, I imagine that because of the Euro4 pollution regulations and in 2 days time the Euro5 will come into force which is even more restrictive, it kills the sound of the motorbikes 😣 Luke you're a phenomenon, I keep thinking about lowering the seat of the bike to get to the ground. In my case because I want to go with my wife, and of course, not even thinking about throwing her down because I can't get to the ground properly, makes me regret it for the rest of my life 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Another guest who almost ended up in a visit from our favorite blonde paramedic, has been close 😅 Good video Happy holidays and good new year mates 😃

Luke should look into cutting out some of that foam out of the seat to lower his but and have a firmer reach to the ground. I am 5 foot 3 and know his pain. I have lowered the suspension and trimmed the seat to have a more confident ride. To keep the 21 inch front tyre and have better traction in the dirt he could just slip the forks up into the triple clamps and put in handle bar risers. I also removed the dog bones in the rear suspension and replaced them with adjustable ones that work on a turn buckle set up from an American company called Soupys Performance. It gives 4 inches of drop from stock height so you can have stock clearance when you need it and lower when it doesn't. It costs about $350 and I had my side stand made into an adjustable one for $66 at the engineering workshop in my town. I had a threaded bar welded into the the bottom foot and a nut to suit welded into the top half with a lock nut in between. I could remove three inches from the middle of the stock side stand. It is much better now and I am still able to have full clearance when I need it. Best of both worlds. I also put on a front forks, wheel and triple clamps from a DRz400 and had the clamps engineered to keep the ignition and steering lock so with an Olins rear shock I have a fully modern and adjustable suspension. If I had my time over again I would have got the triple clamps from one of the bike stores and put in the RM upside down forks. These modifications can be done to the 1980's DR suspension technology.

Just watching Luke's DR650.. I think due to the smaller front wheel the bikes trail has changed making the bike over steer causing the rear to loose traction. Weigh bias is no good, I would suggest going back to 21 front and get suspension rods shortened and lower link at rear... Just my thoughts. DR650 are a "go for ever bike".

LUKE!!! Are you running stock suspension on that DR??? I have to say, if you are, that's rough. Those stock shocks are like death pogo sticks. I've got performance suspension on my DR and it really helps the tires "behave" instead of jumping side to side.

Luke has the same issue as me. I'm 5'8" (176.7 c) and my inseam is 29" (73.5c). I can't touch the ground on most off-road bikes, every thing I ride is lowered. I was wondering if there is a narrow 18" front rim or narrow 17" that may make a better tire selection possible.

I'm 5'7", I had a cr125r, crf 250r and now going for a Tenere 700. Never lowered any of my bikes. I fell quite a bit but you get used to tall bikes.

Drop the rear suspension link and drop the front forks on the triple clamp some. He needs that bike a lot lower for him to ride it safely even on the black stuff. He would appreciate it soo much more.

Suzuki makes a kit for the 650 to lower 1.5,” bringing the seat height down from 33.5 to 32.” You should be able to get both feet down comfortably since the bike also sags when you sit on it.

stock front aint bad.. rear is depending on your weight. [drive a t7 as well. with stock suspention, planning on doing the rear soon]

As a lightweight I can easily set proper sag with the stock spring, but blew through & clacked the front a couple times getting aggressive with speed & air time. Cringe worthy. Dialing up the compression damping front & rear has helped some. Still considering an upgrade to the fork internals though if it continues.

Yeah, I must be light enough at 76kg for the rear, with the preload maxed and clickers tweaked it seems fine. The forks are a different story, I gotta be real fuckin careful else I get some humdinger teeth rattling bottom outs. I only just noticed yesterday how much sag there is in the forks even with the bike resting on the sidestand, ridiculous. I'm seriously considering some preload spacers for the forks, as a cheap way to beef it up a little, and I guess re-valving if that gives no joy 🤷‍♂️ I really don't wanna spend a lot on suspension I'd rather just ride it sensibly and use the EXC if I feel like trying to be superman haha.

Ya kinda bites that the front has no external preload to set up the sag & the bottom out resistance is almost non existent. Keeps a guy honest in the trails for sure. Nice to have the enduro rig handy to cut loose on!
