As a teenager I lived aboard with my parents and we sailed from Maine to Florida and the Bahamas. The first day we set sail heading south and off the coast of MA we had a fire in the forepeak. My dad had me take the helm at age 14 while he went below (a small TV had caught fire that was attached to a battery). I was terrified as we were going into the wind (63 ft mast) and I was dodging lobster pots and at sunset. What a start! But we made it and the five years I lived aboard were the absolute best of my life! Good on ya!

They are wearing some at 17:40. You have to assume during rough conditions they know what they are doing.. Having a PFD on the kiddos when the kiddos are on deck is what they typically have done for other video's.

Agreed, not be an armchair sailor but in any situation like that always have your lifejacket on before going on deck, ideally clipped into jackstays running the length of the deck. 18:50 is a great example of how to get lost at sea. Glad everyone safe and can see how wearing a lifejacket is not only for you but for your other crew members who will then risk their life to try recover you.

Just tie in. You fall off a boat that has that speed potential, or any boat, in heavy weather, even if noticed immediately, your chance of recovery is very low. There must be some electronic solution to help, but just based on human potential, you can't easily find your way back to where they went into the water, and you can't see them for the wave tops. We aren't poolside at a hotel.

I was impressed at how you two, Elayna and Riley, were so composed at the worst times of the trip. A lot of things going wrong, complicated by poor weather. Not having engines was dangererous as you pointed out. Anyhow, everybody seemed to learn a lot on this trip, albeit the hard way at times. Shaking a boat out can be tough work. Once you become intimately familiar with her, life will be better and you will look back on the rough patches fondly and with confidence and pride. What an episode, so important to share things that go wrong so everybody can learn. All in all, a gorgeous sail boat! I guess that's why they call it a shakedown. 😂 You're getting a lot of flack in the comments but cruisers know that waking up to a squall, a) it's disorienting b) it's safer to stop the drum smashing into the boat ASAP. God love you tho, you were lucky. The exit rules of Thailand are downright dangerous to sailors. Doing 16 knots is FAST I guess also a reminder of how fast. They were composed on the film they posted. I doubt they were composed during most of the sail because many moments were truly life or death moments on this passage and safety precautions were not taken. Regardless of what Vietnam's policies are, you don't take a family out on a boat in those conditions and that was their first mistake.

While you're docked having repairs made you could add railings around the deck, and add larger netting so the kids can be safer with more space to play. Add some overhead protection for the person at the helm. The boat needs a few adjustments for safe, fun, and comfortable family living. These are simple things. If this was your house, it would be no big deal to do these things, so I don't think adding these to a boat is a big deal either.

I'm a 44 year old dad from South Africa and know what it's like when the kids are not well ...on land, when a hospital is just a few minutes away. @@sb5064 They really can't. Vietnam is super strict about you sticking to your departure times and their government is fairly unpredictable in how things are enforced. So, it could be anywhere from no big deal, to some government official essentially extorting you in exchange for leniency to them getting deported with no recourse and not being able to return. They basically had to leave, no other real choice. They did have a choice to wear PFD's though, and to test their propulsion, and to wear harnesses, and they did none of this above, which is fairly risky.

Can I suggest that if there are possible conditions like that, you run jack lines and have everyone clipped in? Even with a PFD, if someone had gone over, there was no getting them back. I was in a Newport Bermuda race and we hit a squall like that at night in the Gulf Stream. I was on the bow changing the #2 down to the #3. We had just gotten the 2 down when a wave swept me (and the sail) right under the lifeline and over the port side of the boat. I was clipped in on the starboard jack line, so I just hung there on the port side of the boat. (I was also still holding the foot of the 2 with my left hand as it splayed out behind the boat). It took two people to haul me back on. If I hadn’t been clipped in, I (and the 2) would have been lost

Watching this and everything you went through, one thing became very apparent. When you’re forward, either doing normal work on the foredecks or wrestling with a busted sail, you really are open to all kinds of danger. There is nothing to stop you being thrown off the boat. No.side rails or lines, and as far as I could make out, nobody was wearing a harness attached to an arrester-line. Imagining you guys being out there alone with the kids, being hit by such weather, is scary shit.

Over the past few months I've become a big fan of Lauren Landers' channel. (I don''t want to be impolite so I won't post a link here.) But that prompted me to do a search of "best sailing channels on KZbin," and this was one of the top 3-4 results. Honestly, I did not care for the other "top" channels, but I LOVE this one. Right after Riley pointed out that bird, I saw a box floating in the ocean about 13:04 into the video. Thought that was odd 🫤 Darwin's thumbs up when Riley asked him if he was tired was the greatest! I I even rewound it to watch him again. Made me smile. My grandson is just a few months younger than Darwin. They're so cute to watch at that age. He and Lenny are the best. This was a great video guys. Looked like you really had a crazy night. Looking forward to watching your next adventure! Love you all ♥️

I so agree with you on reefing lines after experiencing 50+ winds for a day in tight waters in the archipelago. It was supposed to be a fine day as it was for awhile until it wasn’t, meteorology is sometimes like buying lottery tickets. And yes we were short handed, me and my 6 month pregnant wife. The baby girl then learned to walk on a long crossing during a storm with 40-50 winds and extremely high and short waves. That wind just stared after sunset after a glassy day with no wind and it came on in minutes. Happy of the jacklines and tethers that night.

No lifelines (railings) on the boat? With young children, that should be a priority. Even for adults trying to leave the cockpit heading to the bow to address issues in stormy seas, life lines could be a game changer. As a long-time sailor myself, this really surprised me.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they will be adding railings now that they are in their new place? It sounded like they needed to get out of Vietnam. Hopefully they can do something so the kids can move around the boat more, that will make those days at sea more enjoyable for them.

As important as they are, every boat I bought had them present, but not good enough to actually do their job. Fortunately they're pretty easy to fix if you have two people. Or a vice grip and some duct tape and a lot of patience

The boat is a beauty and I am impressed with both of you handling the boat and your children. The one thing I noticed that I think you should consider fixing is the drumming sound as waves hit the Ama's. I would consider foamed in insulation or foam blocks adhered to the inside of the Ama's in locations selected to reduce the drumming from the hollow structure as a wave pounds it. It was very evident listening and watching your video and would add to the fatigue.

Siting in the A/C watching the video reminds me when I bought my catamaran sailboat and thought about sailing the world. Read 7 books by famous sailers and was impressed that only one was still sailing and they now lived far from the water and one said “ I kept the spare oar from the dinghy and walked inland till someone asked what was that in my hand, that’s where I settled” Got it and never sailer more than 2 weeks and 250 miles from the comforts of home.

That’s literally my only caveat; the heat. I’ve never been a fan of hot & humid. I can’t think of anything worse 😂 So being stuck aboard a small vessel with stifling heat is just not my jam.

Now that was a hell of a maiden voyage! The boat is gorgeous and fast, and the crew is tough and game (Darwin looked like he was exhausted, and he just gives a little thumbs up - that KILLED me, what a little trooper). Very exciting. Grub screw! So good you're back on the water!

The staysail is supposedly your "strongest" sail, which was utilized as a kind of storm sail. I was shocked that it broke loose, until seeing that the drum was attached to the deck by a flimsy looking tackline. On my sloop, I had an internal, removable "baby" stay which was stainless steel standing rigging thinner, but similar to the other stays and shrouds on the vessel. It was built to handle stormy conditions. It doesn't appear that your staysail was engineered for that purpose.

An incredible sail indeed, and you wouldn't have it any other way, world class pioneers and legends! as far as your carpet, ( side note) you could drop it off to a dry cleaners, they have drums and or a press that would wash out the sea water out of the carpet. You've had a once in a life time experiences, and with more to come! Hope for all the best for both you and the kids, how exciting! I love the colour combinations and the windows.

I know all about heavy and rough weather,I have been sailing and cruising everywhere for almost 8 years. i think you should have waited it out for a better window weather before you left, my second point is to lock yourself on the rail when you are outside on the deck for safety reasons in those kind of storms and waves. It seemed rather dangerous .

I'm a USAF aviator who has participated in several shakedown flights of heavily refurbished aircraft (new aircraft are very rare!) Save your sanity by GENTLY increasing performance demands upon a new ship. Easy does it! Gently add stresses. In the shakedown cruise, your primary goal is to gain a good feel for your new sailboat. Yes, you'll want to "put her through the paces." That means testing her systems to within specified design limits, not pushing her beyond design failure limits, not either of sailboat or crew. Engineering refinement consists of the slow but steady progression of stressors, stopping and slowing at each failure, fixing and verifying same, before ramping slowly and steadily up to the next point of failure. At this point, I MUST ask: Why are the manufacturers asking you to performance test their sailboats? That's a HUGE risk! THEY should be wringing out their own designs, certifying it thoroughly before relinquishing control over to you.

So glad you made port "largely undamaged". Tris are super powerful, which is great in nice weather, but when all hell is breaking loose, they can be super-duper powerful, and that's "like going downhill with no brakes". My tri can sail at 10 kt with a bare pole in a strong wind. I have noticed that I have a notch, a point of sail where the boat just leaps forward. If your used to it, it's really fun, but if you are unaware, it will come as a big surprise. Good to have a bit of seasoned crew on board when thing get weird (like Mary Poppins crew). Another thing is that when you get going, it's going to be wet on deck, sometimes it's going to be a shower. When you're going fast, your bow spray can land behind your boat. A butt screw, yep, its sometimes the smallest things that can create chaos on board. But with time you will figure all that out. You not only have a new boat but a very fast and very high-tech boat, and that's a lot to master. The idea of an electric and diesel is great, hopefully the electric drives with regen will prove to be enough in the future. Regen will be great on a tri, because you go fast enough to really get power out of it. Boats only running 6 or 8 kt aren't able to go fast enough to get into a regen sweet spot. Nice to know that worked for you. All in all, quite a video, and the adventure is just beginning. Looking forward to your next one.
