So we burnt all our wood over winter so it was time to think ahead to next winter and start to prepare. Time to chop down some of our lovely trees.

What's up everyone, we are Naomi and Jack 👋
We are a young married couple who are all about personal growth.
In summer 2020, amidst a global pandemic, we uprooted our lives in Central London and decided to move to Northern Sweden.
We were fed up of living on top of millions of other people in London, living out of one room in a flat shared with Naomi's parents, all whilst studying, working, creating KZbin content and launching our business.
So we bought a car, packed it full of our belongings, and drove nearly 3000km to Sweden with no idea where we were going to live.
So join us as we share and document our journey through film.

Good work! But you should really wear some safety pants and boots, to prevent you from cutting into your self. This is the ultimate first lesson you are given, when you learn how to operate a chain saw. It only takes a second of inattention to make it a really bad day. And please - don't google chainsaw accidents! I wish the both of you really good luck with all the firewood ;)

Hej! Now I come with a comment again. This time I am not writing to help you as I did a long time ago with the wood boiler and to calculate how much wood you need. I also wrote that you should not use more than 20% hardwood as firewood as there may be tar in the chimney. Now I will comment on Jack, the saw and handling of the saw. Jack must wear trousers intended for sawing with a chain saw (if Jack accesses a leg with the chain, the saw stops immediately) Jack will use boots with saw protection. A very nice semi proffesional saw. It is also expensive. One thing that is among the first things you have to learn when handling a chain saw is to always saw close to the motor part of the saw itself. Then the saw cannot be thrown up against the head. The saw is very strong and what is called "throw protection" in Swedish may not hit the hand or the arm. The chain sits on what we in Swedish call swords. I know it has a different name in English but do not remember what. If you have not taken a course in handling a chain saw, it is extremely dangerous to saw with the tip of the sword. The felling of the tree was (apart from the clothes) correct on such a small tree. Cutting down larger trees requires a little more experience. There is a great risk that the tree will fall in the wrong direction. Then you use wedges or special jacks to fell the tree.

fell the birches when the leaves looks like mouse ears. let them lie down in the forrest with the branches still there all summer and they shoud be dry in the fall.

I agree, I know this trick also. Let the birches lie with all branches and twigs, the leaves will develop and then you get a lot of evaporation from the leaves, which sucks water from the trunk and the trunk becomes dry. Recommended.

Almost time to break out the bikinis! 👊🏽 (weather wise) Putting up wood for winter: even if you leave it to dry out before you move it and process it, it’s still the hardest job you’ll ever do. It really makes you appreciate heat when it’s cold-the difference between life and freezing to death.

you get firewood. put the work in the right place. Buy a truck load of 20 - 30 m3 and concentrate on cutting and splitting the wood. otherwise you have no chance of getting well.

Good job! It is an advantage if you can chop up the wood immediately before it is dry, because the liquid inside them makes it much easier for the ax to go through .. in addition, it takes up less space.

I like to have large pvc pipe that I roll the log on and it helps me move my bigger logs when I have to cut them. I only cut the ones that have or are about to fall before they block the road. I use a lot in my woodworking because I have a large amount of soft maple. Good try with the chainsaw Naomi but you had Jack a little worried.

It's safer to make that back cut 5cm above front cut wedge point and not through, leave 3-4cm untouched wood, that will act like a hinge and guide tree to fall safely to direct that way where wedge cut is pointing.

Ok... the learnibg curve can be steep.. I recommend the geothermal route, easier and less work intensive. Solar is also good way to save long term energy.

I also wondered. But the video maybe is some weeks old. The grass is brown and the trees have no leaves. According to SMHI Arvidsjaur should be snow-free now. Naomi, when was it made? How is it now? Is all snow gone? Please show us the place when it is really green! I am sure it is very nice in summer. Here in south Sweden is of course full summer.

Direct heating via electricity is really expensive, especially in cold parts of the country. And it gets really cold up in northern Sweden.

It’s not the most energy efficient but it’s all right. 1700 kWh/m3 compared to 1900 kWh/m3 for birch.
