He was given the title of “Godfather of Soul” for a reason. Michael Jackson said his mother used to wake him up as a young kid if James Brown came on the Ed Sullivan Show. That was Mike’s idol. James Brown new how to work the stage!

Not in the ‘50s and 60’s. That “Godfather” name was a 70s/80s thing. In our day, when we old folks were kids , and when JAMES was still lead singer of THE FAMOUS FLAMES, as you can see HERE, WE called him…”MISTER DYNAMITE!!”

Michael later in the early 80s was looking for a copy of this performance.

The TAMI show is the first music concert to be put in theaters nationwide. TAMI stands for Teenage America Music international. He did four songs he came out with "Out of Sight," then went into "Prisoner of love" then "Please Please Please" and ended up with Nigh train. He killed the show the Rolling Stones didn't even want to come out after his performance. watch the DVD The TAMI show for the full concert.

This was from the 1964 concert THE TAMI SHOW. He was 31 here. The Rolling Stones and other acts were on there but James Brown stole the show. This is his famous cape routine, the original song was his first hit released in February 1956. It went up to number six on the Soul charts.

The three Gentlemen backing James here..are his Original singing group, THE FAMOUS FLAMES. James Brown first began his career as a MEMBER of THE FAMOUS FLAMES….not as a solo act. The FLAMES are BOBBY BYRD (yes, THAT Bobby Byrd) , LLOYD STALLWORTH, and BOBBY BENNETT. JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES had many hit records together…but most young people today never knew that JAMES BROWN first began his career as a member of a VOCAL GROUP….So they tend to only credit HIM for videos that He and THE FAMOUS FLAMES performed in TOGETHER. JAMES BROWN was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. THE FAMOUS FLAMES were inducted in 2012. The JAMES BROWN BAND (a SEPARATE ENTITY from The FLAMES,) we’re nominated, but NOT inducted in 2015.

James was a fan of the wrestler "Gorgeous George" who used to come to the ring dressed the way Macho Man Randy Savage did way later--with robes and whatnot--and he had a valet, so James just thought it was a great bit of theatre to add the 'cape over the shoulder' bit to his act. Legend has it the Rolling Stones wouldn't come on for a long time after the performance because JB stole the show and they knew they couldn't get the crowd back fast enough. After this performance, Mick Jagger complete changed his stage style and started dancing on stage more.

Now if you really wanna see some moves because I know you mentioned that early in the video, Please react to NIGHT TRAIN also from THE TAMI SHOW. Many critics consider that the greatest performance in the history of rock/soul or whatever you wanna call it! James Brown has been my favorite entertainer since I was 12 years old in 1968 and I saw him over 100 times in concert, and have all of his records. Thanks for posting this.

He only performed this way because the rolling stones did not want to go on before him. He won over the crowd so it would be hard for the rolling stones to top his performance.

One more thing: in the 1950s and 1960’s , NOBODY CALLED JAMES BROWN THE GODFATHER OF SOUL. That was a 70’s / 80’s thing. Back when this film was made , JAMES BROWN was known as…”MISTER DYNAMITE !!”
