Just FYI guys, where you went was the Hanoi old quarter where high rises are not allowed, which is why the area looks a bit provincial and backwards. Hanoi is actually the most developed city in Vietnam with many skyscrapers, malls and modern roads, but these are located in other newer districts. These areas are of course of little interest to tourists so no one really goes there, hence why most Vlogs of Hanoi are shot in the old quarter giving the impression of Hanoi being quite under-developed, which is actually not the case at all.
@livingthejolife

Thank you for watching and for the information. We actually got out on bikes and explored outside the old quarter. It was interesting to see the more modern side. I do love the old quarter of Hanoi. I hope it never changes. It so beautiful and unique! Hanoi has a special place in our heart for sure!

It has been 2 years since I left Hanoi to move to HCM city. At heart, I seemingly prefer to live at Hanoi because a bunch of reasons. When it comes to culture, from my perspective, Hanoi is somewhere the mixture of both ancient costumes and cutting-edge lives still exists. I am struggling to find peace in HCM city which I can easily seek out in the northern Vietnam! In conclusion, busy and bustling lives are prevalent among HCM city.

A pro tip… Hoan Kiem lake is so much fun… it’s school holidays here so more than normal crowds of local families like to get out at night. Having said that Friday evenings are the worst time also Saturday & Sundays the whole precinct is closed by fences and it becomes a walking street(Zone) so you be in the thick of the hustle and bustle normal!😆😆 As a local we know the places to go and not go. Train Street was closed because of the very nature it’s dangerous and tourists have been injured badly! Govt decided to close it off thank goodness! Many tubers have posted videos, but there are way more train 🚂 places to see for eg Long Biên Bridge!! Much safer and better outlook for those great shots . Enjoy our City it’s done me well for 4 years so far 😉🙏🏻

Ha! You video'd my apartment on your swan boat ride...its one of the lovely buildings with great views of Truc Bach Lake, famed for being the location where US pilot John McCain dropped when shot down in 1967. The neighborhood has just been turned into a walking street, and far less insane than the Old Quarter. It is delightful to watch other Westerners discover and beome enamored with my adopted city. It's been endlessly fascinating me for a decade and a half.

Burning paper money is to send them to your loved ones in the afterlife to use (yes you are still in the rat race even in the afterlife XD). In Asia the bikes honk just to let others know they are there/coming up from behind/passing. Same as using a bicycle bell. They're not trying to be rude or road raging.

5:04 It’s not real notes he’s burning, but Vietnamese people are incredibly superstitious and believe the after life resembles a life much like the living, so it’s to wish their ascendants are prosperous in the afterlife. I heard it stems from imperial Chinese times.

Very cool adventure you had there! From the look of your and people's outfits, I supposed it was around Dec-Jan when it was a little chilly? I'm a Hanoian so probably I have a few things to add FYI: :D - The man you saw in the temple was burning joss/ghost money (the yellow things represent gold leaves) as offerings to some god/goddess or his ancestors. - The Old Quarters where you're visiting in this episode is a mix between low-rise and mid-rise buildings, between ancient, colonial-styled and slightly more modern boutique buildings. It is intentionally kept so to keep an "ancient" vibe. Hence the name. You'll find more modern highrises in the outlying / suburb areas of Hanoi (few tourists/vloggers feature those parts so that may be a good idea to film in those areas if you're looking to provide "more unique" contents or seek a more off the beaten track experience). - The dark, narrow alley that you were half-way through may be a dead end (leading to a communal space / courtyard shared by a few families), or to the street on the other side, it really depends. So it can be a fun adventure if there's no risk in sight (e.g. the dogs). The inhabitants are used to people "adventuring" past their alleys so most won't complain, and what's better is that there's no mugger/robber. - The low chairs/stools and low tables are used to maximize space use, and to "force" people to be in a more relaxed mode (mentally, not necessarily physically for some!), as it's difficult to look or act serious/uptight in those ridiculous furniture pieces. Many foreign dignitaries, diplomats and heads of state, President Obama and PM Albanese included, were invited to use exactly that kind of tiny stools on their street visits. Anyhow, you can ask the owners to pile up additional stools if they are too tiny for you.

04:48 It is for the ancestor and recent love one who have passed. Most Vietnamese practice Buddhism and the people believe in after life/recarnation. While their passed love ones wait for the next life, people who are still alive burn money (a form to send to their love ones). BTW... If you have been to Hollywood or Los Angeles in United State, Ha Noi and Sai Gon are equivalent to that in Vietnam. In other words, there are much better cities. You should check out Ha Long, Da Lat, Da Nang, Ninh Binh, etc... I used to love Ha Noi but through the last few years, I find that Ha Noi and Sai Gon are so congested, polluted, traffic, etc... I have always recommend to friends that keep Ha Noi and Sai Gon to the end of the trip. But that is from personal experience. You would enjoy the trip so much more if you buddy up with someone who can speak both English/Vietnamese or you can hire a 1-2 hour tour guide for the city. Staying a day or two per city in Vietnam does not do wonders for the experience. There are lots more beneath the eyes. I wish you a safe trip.

IMO... The best time to travel Vietnam is starting November to April. June to August are extremely hot months in the North.
