so you just park at the beach and stay the night ? i thought its ilegal.

Yes we did and technically it is illegal. We heard about this spot from a local as an area that wasn't really bothered by the police so we took a chance. First two nights I thought for sure we might get a knock on our window but it never happened. By the third day I felt pretty confident we were going to be good and we were. We got lucky for sure. Don't think anyone can count on this being the case every time.

Did you have to get a permit to park by the beach?

We did not get a permit and this particular beach we stayed at was only a day use beach. Technically, it is not allowed to stay overnight in this area (or anywhere in Maui unless it’s a designated campground). We got very lucky and were never asked to leave. We were told this particular area was pretty safe to stay overnight without being kicked out so we took a chance and it worked out for us. The next beach over to us is a designated camping area and does require reservations.

Great job on the video, my wife and I stayed on Maui at a friend's house back in April, next time we visit we want to camp like you did, van life on the island seems to be a great way to see Maui.

Thank you! It was definitely a great way to experience Maui! This was our first time and we discussed it after, asking each other "would we do this again?" The answer is yes! Not every single time, but we would definitely give it another go!
