Hey you guys!!! I’m lovin going in your trip!! I been camping all of my life and have discovered when using an Ice chest, the BEST ICE TO BUY is Block Ice. You can split the block so that the ice only covers the bottom but takes care of EVERYTHING in the chest quite nicely! Just a tip! I just found your channel and intend on watching all ur vids! For those wondering...$140-200 per night to rent the camper van. In addition there is a $3 per day Hawaii Rental Car Surcharge and a 4.166% Sales Tax. There is a 5 day minimum rental. $250 Refundable Damage Deposit due upon booking. Rental Fee due in full upon arrival. If you don't have full coverage, they can provide insurance for you.

The other option in Maui is Walmart for cheap prices. They even have a tourist section for souvenirs where the same brands that you see in shops are at Walmart, including gold jewelry at better prices. The other thing to save money is pack your own dry goods *snacks, pasta etc, in your suit case to bring to Maui. We stayed at little cottages all over the island for about $100 plus per night, moving about every two to three days so that we could experience all of Maui. One bedrooms or more cottages & all had full stocked kitchen pots, pans, dishes to cook in (these types of family cottages on their properties are very common all over the Hawaiian Islands or small cottage hotels = old Hawaiian style hotels some with pools but the beach is across the street from on the property your on an islands to the beaches are within a short drive) this is one of the other options to see all of Maui or any Hawaiian islands. I used Formmers travel guide book & website and also the VRBO website to find these cottages (see both of these companies sites). If it’s off season you can book some in Hawaii but, in season best to book prior to going. You can find great deals on rental cars (we got a car for $17 per day) just look around on all the travel sites vs rental car sites. Be sure to really look over your rental car at the rental agency because most of the cars have a lot of scratches & dents all over them & you need to mark this on the paperwork prior to leaving the rental agency.

Thanks for the tips! The cottages are definitely another great way to see the islands. This is what we did on the Big Island and moved every two days to get a nice feel for the different sides and regions. We enjoyed our time in November/beg of Dec while it was lower season. If you might have noticed, we took some backpacking meals like you made mention of with us from California for dinners and breakfast in the van. There are great ways to be conscious of how you spend while there and make your dollars go the furthest 😊 You don't need to have a fancy place to stay to experience the best of Hawaii.

Going to Maui next March with my daughter! Planning to stay in a hostel instead of a resort, renting ebikes because neither of us drive. I want to do the road to hana on ebikes! I lived in Maui for a year in 2007-2008. Maui No Ka Oi. I lived up LahainaLuna on Paeohi st. Such a gorgeous please to live. It’s very expensive. But worth it. I had a blast and was able to find what I was looking for. Peace .

Sounds like you had a great time on Maui! Don't forget to take a passenger ferry over to the island of Lanai for the day if you ever return to Maui. You'll enjoy the quaint, sparsely inhabited island ... snorkeling at Hulopoe Bay and taking a shuttle up into Lanai City, the only town on the island! Looks like you kids had fun. If you go on TripAdvisor you guys are bucking the trend of what you're not supposed to be able to do on Maui 🌴 Especially the Westie & back road from Hana 😁 Mana Foods is a nice store for sure. When I go to Maui I stay at a B&B for about $140/night, fill up on free breakfast, & quite happy with a chicken salad for dinner. It's all about what you're willing to pay. Also, water doesn't really cost that much there. It's about the convenience of a plastic container vs. a refillable unit. I typically buy one plastic bottle when I arrive & keep refilling it each day. Anyways thanks for sharing your adventure, Aloha, Theo

When my wife and I went to Maui, we stayed at the Westin so that was nice. I made the mistake of renting a large car.....can you believe how tight the curves are?...had to slow down to a near stop and beep the horn to warm anyone coming from the other direction. Scary turns on cliffs are not my favorite things.

The expense is relative to where you live on the mainland. In Maui the early part of last December, gas was cheaper than where I live in the Bay Area of California. Sales tax is about half of what I pay though they tax food, which California doesn't. I did not keep track of our expenses but it seemed to me that Oahu was more expensive than Maui. Our hotel and rental car cost a good bit more on Oahu.

My guess to the special dinner spot is Mama's Fish House in Paia. Maui is where I want to live out my days when my work ends. Just like Linbergh, who is burred just South of Hana in Kipahula. People tell me I'm crazy because of the cost. Well, like you being from California, I'm from New York. The sticker shock is not that strong as someone coming from the Medwest. I don't think I could do the van thing as a retirement home, but will sell my split level house and buy a one bedroom condo. Great series by you two. Oh, and by the large case of Kirkland water at Costco in Kahului next time. I think we got 30 bottles for $5.00, much cheaper than the Glacier water at Safeway! Mama's Fish House was out of our range, but we hear such great things about it. The place we were going to go was Cafe Attitude near Hana. They do a special Sunday evening thing. We know you can get your dream and don't think you're crazy. You are very right about the sticker shock from the midwest compared to the more expensive places on the coasts. I looked at the van price and its Weekly: $1,050. It would have been good to include that in your total price. Maui isn't cheap. Avoid Safeway. Always go to Costco and Walmart

Obviously, You don't know how to shop. You don't go to Safeway to shop unless you're a tourist. Go to Foodland and get a makai card, go to Times, shop around. My favorite place for basic products is Longs.

We rent a camper and every morning ,i juste got up the wood straire and be on the Beach hihihi its not Maui but it very Nice and relaxing ,being on the Beach ,i could ear the ocean when i was at the camper. Absolutely! 🤙 We have traveled all over the world and filled jugs from faucets and taps and saved lots of $$$ versus buying and using plastic jugs. Once you have the receptacle, there is no reason you cant refill them. Those fresh fruits 😋. And spread joy and love 😍

DROP DOWN part of channel will give fuller info on COST of VAN Rental. Basically $140 per day completely outfitted. I noticed several viewers ask and Mr. & Mrs. would not reply. 14 days X $140 = $1960 Added to total. A lot but much cheaper and much more adventure than a hotel or cottage.

Ed, not sure why you thought we wouldn't reply as we answer to all comments on our channel. Actually the cost of the van is $150 per day through Maui Westy and the total with the paddle boards rented is closer to $2400. If you added hotels, rental cars and meals that you would be much more tempted to go out for. It's one heck of a cool experience to be on the island living in a van. 🤙

We had a bit of FOMO not going, but that spot we found along the water was too good to peal away from. It was a place called Cafe Attitude, near Hana. It was a farm that does a special event and open mic on Sunday evenings. 😀

So I would never spend that much money on water. Nor would I waste that much plastic. If there is a local reading this could you please tell me where the fresh water springs are. Is a refill station the best way to go? Way too much plastic buying those.

We drink a gallon of water per person per day and that doesn't include the water for cooking. Water for washing doesn't need to be purified for us. Of course we never like buying water jugs, but are forced to have a receptacle to refill when in new places. Once we had the jugs we did refill them for $0.50 a gallon. Believe us, we are super aware of the issues with plastics and had to gasp at the shelve prices.
