The spice is called Berbre. Berbre is a blend of 12 to 22 different spices. Dark red chile, coriander, black and white cumin, ginger, garlic, cloves, rue, Sweet basil, rosemary, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, black paper..etc. each family in Ethiopia they have their own Berbre blend. We use Berbre for most of our stew, like Doro wet, Lentil stew, lamb tibes. Enjoy Ethiopian food.

@singdancelive1995 3 жыл бұрын
@@annaliebert5529 Yes Dawit is right doro wet and tibs are the must haves. My fam also always has shiro which i think is a chick pea sauce and depending on what you like there are different spice levels and meats. I prefer yegeb tibs and the spicier flavors. Also I suggest just putting all of it directly on the injera makes it easier to mix things together and eat and the injera underneath when you finish just soaks up all the flavors and its delicious :))
@singdancelive1995
@singdancelive1995 3 жыл бұрын
@@PackOfWolves Definitely doro wet and tibs to start. There are different meat options to choose from. I prefer lamb. Also if you really want I suggest trying pan fried fish. I'm sure most Ethiopian restaurants serve that and its crispy and light and always good in my opinion but that depends on how much you like fish hahah

Not sure how big the Ethiopian community in Melbourne is, but you missed some key things about the dining experience, if available: 1) For coffee drinkers, Ethiopia is the motherland of Coffee - No visit to an Ethiopian home or restaurant is compleat without finishing off with coffee, especially if you can get the Coffee Ceremony (roasting coffee at tableside for example) 2) Ethiopia makes very good honey wine, most common type called T’ej (has some roots added during ferment to flavour) 3) There are many meat dishes, most notably Kitfo - typically a seasoned minced raw beef, though western restaurants will cook it on request. Also, lamb or goat?, is served this way too. 4) Ethiopian beer is very good too, and if you can get it, Ethiopian Guinness has one of the strongest ABV% of any country. FYI: The main ingredient for their seasoning blends is a unique chilli pepper called Berbere - It is not hot by any means, but adds a very unique flavour. The pepper itself is very small, like peppercorns.

Yay trying different types of food is like exploring other cultures without having to travel! The soft flatbread is my favorite part of an Ethiopian meal! You should try Afghan food next. Also, how about native Australian food? When we were in Australia 15 years ago, there was a chain called Red Ochre that focused on serving native Australian fruit, veg, meat and seafood. The food was so interesting and different from anything we've had before. Yes, we tried the kangaroo. Don't judge, just try.

1. African food is great period. My sister married a Nigerian so I've tasted a lot of their cuisines I'm sometimes asked which West African food I like best - and it's all good. I don't want to diss Ethiopian or Kenyan food, but I recommend it all. 2. Jeera is cumin. How can you not have had experience eating it? It's all over Mexican and Indian food and if nothing else you must have been to a Holi celebration. If not I recommend it just for the food. Even if it's over for this year (March 28-29). Ethiopian food is great. It does pay to read about it.

I love Ethiopian food. Their dishes were pretty soupy. All the places I've been to have all of the dishes in individual piles on the injera no need for a bowl. Since they're not soupy you don't have to worry about things getting soft. Also, most places serve injera rolled up on the side. Everyone grab a roll & go at it. The injera on the plate is usually extra when you run out of the rolled up rolls.
