The first time I heard this song, I was in Miami, Fl for my Uncle Mike's funeral. I rode to get a prescription with my cousin (Darla) who was REALLY close with her dad. While we were in the drive-thru waiting, this song came on the radio and she turned it up as loud as this would go and said this is for you daddy and she just starting singing the lyrics real loud but at the same time crying... I broke down and we both cried and cried. R.I.P. Uncle Mike & Darla, As she passed away just a few short years after...

Hi Renee, I've got a black female friend who also mainly listens to rock music (she's a huge Steely Dan fan). People many times will gravitate toward styles of music that they were exposed to in childhood by family, friends and community, but I hate when people only listen to one genre of music because they think that's the style they're "expected" to listen to. I've always listened to a wide variety of music since I was a kid, which I think was due to the influence of my brothers and father (he had albums ranging from Stevie Wonder to Stan Kenton big band music) and because I was (and still am) a musician playing in several genres of music.

I'm not really familiar with Hoobastank's other material, but I've loved this song since it was first released. The music is well written and produced and the lyrics are very inspirational. For some reason, I almost get goosebumps whenever he goes up an octave when singing "you" at the end the chorus. I always thought the lead singer, Doug Robb, had a really cool look which I attributed to being part Asian and after a quick Google search, I found out he's half Japanese and half Scottish. I wonder if he likes to have a single malt Scotch when he eats sushi? 😆

This song couldn't mean more to me. My youngest daughter has said that this song is for me. Since the age of 12 she has had a life of drugs and stealing. She's been in and out of jails and prisons. We'd had very hard times dealing with her yet somehow I couldn't give up on her, even when her father, who is now my ex, tried to disown her. Right now she is in prison on a 7 year sentence and we have just begun year 5. My heart breaks every day. We talk quite a bit and she never ceases to thank me for being there for her. She now focuses on me because she knows that she has lost time with me and that my health hasn't been the best lately. So she dedicated this song to me because she says the words fit perfect from her to me. I listen to it all the time. Thank you for liking it to.
