You know what’s crazy? Game Sack, as well as a few other KZbin channels, are a part of my gaming memories now. I think your channel is about 8 years old, and I’ve been watching nearly since the beginning. Sometimes I just start up a Game Sack playlist on my Smart TV while I am playing Genesis or some other retro system (but usually Genesis, and definitely not a Nintendo system). In fact, there are probably five different KZbin channels I watch regularly that cover retro games, and I just enjoy having them on as background noise in general - whether I’m doing some kind of work around the house, or doing cardio, or whatever. It sure beats the hell out of listening to the news, or talk radio. It’s pretty nuts to think there are complete strangers in other parts of the country, or even the world, who are now a part of my “gaming memories.” I was listening to a Game Sack episode that was playing on my TV the first time I beat Shadow Dancer, for example (I guess I’m just ADHD like that). That’s a game I had played many many times, for many years, but I’d never beaten it. So now, when I think about Shadow Dancer, I think about being a six year-old kid and swapping the controller with my friends, but then I also think about being a thirty year-old man and watching Game Sack. LOL And of course I can’t ever, ever play Truxton, or MUSHA, or Revenge of Shinobi - without thinking of CGR. And I think tons of people nowadays would say they think of Angry Video Game Nerd whenever they play Castlevania II. It’s like adding new layers of nostalgia on top of older layers of nostalgia. And now I’m starting to ramble sooo I’m done. Yep. Cool episode.

Same here. I actually don't remember how I ran into Game Sack but I am thinking it might have been through Retroware yeeears ago. Also, Joe's name rung a bell back from the OC Remix days but wasn't sure it was him. How ironic I would see him create Game Sack. Nonetheless, I love these guys and they seem to create alot of their stuff with love. Which I feel they truly deserve. Even though I rarely post as often, they know I'm -stalking- I mean lurking around. =)

Similar memory of Pac Man. My aunt and uncle own a grocery store next door to me, and my aunt purchased a Mrs. Pac Man cabinet for the store. She'd never played a game in her life, but she could fly through the levels and get farther than any of the rest of us could. She still has that same cab and can still blaze through the game.

Back in 90 something my friend and I set up a tent in his back yard. In true camping tradition, we ran an extension cord out to the tent where we had a 13" black and white tv and a Super Nintendo. NBA Jam, NHL 94, and super metroid kept us more than entertained that summer

One of my favorite gaming memories takes place when I was working at Walmart in the electronics department when the Sega Saturn was released. A customer had returned their Saturn, so I saw this as a chance to get one a little bit cheaper since it was an open box item. ☺ I purchased Sega Rally Championship as well that day and drove home after work as fast as I could to play. After setting up the Saturn I popped open the disc tray and to my delight a rented copy of Galactic Attack was in it with the rental sticker still on it. Lol. Score! So Galactic Attack was my first shooter for my Saturn, followed quickly by Darius Gaiden. 😊😊😊

This was one of my favorite episodes. I have so many memories of gaming growing up, but there is one that stands out. My best friend at the time who lived next door had just got an NES, and I rushed over to play the pack-in Mario duckhunt. Before long both our parents came in with several new games from the video rental store with Ghostbusters, Mario 2, Top Gun, and a few others. Later on in the day they went back and rented us even more games, all while we just sat in my friends room, probably close to a dozen games in all. Every game was so magical and new compared to my Intelevision. looking back now I don't know why they decided to rent so many games for us, all in one day, I would normally be allowed one a week. I've asked my parents and they don't remember, I suspect they were just happy to shut us up with videogames for the whole day- maybe they were having a party

I had the Dreamcast lighting strike thing happen to me, but with the original Xbox. I was at a friends house and we were doing a Halo lan party, this would have been around 2003 or so, before Halo 2. There was a big lightning strike and the power goes out for a second. When it came back on, we started back up and tried getting everything going again, only I couldn't connect. We kept trying and trying, but finally realized that the power surge fried my modem - and only my modem. Unlike the Dreamcast, it wasn't interchangable, so I was out of luck unless I bought a whole new system (which I didn't). So for the rest of the time, we had to take my younger brother's Xbox over to play. I wasn't able to get Xbox Live until I got an Xbox 360 years later. My friend still hosts an Xbox lan party once a month, and I always go, even if most of the guys from the good old days don't anymore. It's still fun.

When the psp came out in the USA there was nowhere AT ALL really that had the games available to rent for the first SEVERAL months after its launch... so I did a lot of try and return with careful shrink-wrap adjusting and somewhat suspicious but also bored and tired, large-store return-counter employees. It was kinda necessary though; that system was good but also felt like a gamble in many ways with bad loading, Sony drm, unclear developer support, and Nintendo dominance. Who's with me?

As a 37 y.o. gamer, watching these episodes of old memories of fellow older gamers like me brings a lot of nostalgia. One of my most vivid memories is of the day i was at my cousin's house and he was waiting for a guy to deliver his recent bought Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Nights Into Dreams and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, all for the Saturn, obviously. We were young, and it was way past bed time (acording to my aunt, but she gave us a free night to play that day, due to our anxiety). The guy arrived about 9pm and suddenly it was 7am, the sun was rising and the house was smelling fresh hot coffee and toasts. Good days.

Now I had to wait all through Xmas with more games but no console, not till next day, I got all replaced and I was very happy.

One of my favorite gaming memories revolves around how I got my copy of Final Fantasy 3. It started with a visit to a video rental store my family would frequent, and I loved the place as it had a huge selection of games. ( They even rented PC-CDROM games ) Anyhow, I had gone in with the intention of re-renting Snatcher for the Sega CD, but it was out. Seriously who the heck else owned a Sega CD in my little rural town and would be interested in that title?!? Jeesh. I didn't have a back up plan and my parents were giving me that "hurry up" look.. Not wanting to leave empty handed I quickly browsed the aisles and picked up Final Fantasy 3 simply because it had an interesting cover, and I had read a good review on it. Well I got hooked on it and played it non-stop for the weekend we had it, and when I went to return it my parents offered to buy it from the store because they knew I had my save game on that cart. The store agreed and not only did I get the cart, but they gave me the box that they had resealed.

You guys are lucky to have friends who share your love of video games. Now that I am a grown adult none of my local friends have any interest in video games whatsoever, and that's too bad because I have an awesome game collection and I also develop games for a living. Oh well, you guys will have to substitute for the nerdy friends I don't have. I have a lot of happy memories from the 8 bit computer era, buying budget games on cassette based solely on the picture on the cover. Back in those days shops used to be sent random assortments of games so every shop had different games, and you never knew what you were going to get. A lot of them were terrible, but we played them anyway. I would also spend a lot of time at the many arcades which existed at the time (all long gone now of course), where I could play some properly good games, and be inspired to go home and try to code my own terrible imitations. My parents hated how much I was into video games, but now making games is my job so some good came of it. Or maybe not. I have a distinct memory of seeing Xevious in the arcade for the first time. This is the first game I saw where I felt like the graphics had real style. The scrolling landscape! Those silvery spaceships! It looked so much better than the other games that were around at the time and it really inspired me a lot. I have memories of seeing a lot of other arcade games for the first time as well, like Final Fight with its huge sprites. I try to hold on to these memories so that when I am feeling burned out by work I can remind myself how much my child self would have been thrilled to be doing what I am doing today. One specific gaming memory: I was traveling home from university, a journey which involved a boring three hour ferry boat trip. However this ferry did at that time have a Metal Slug 2 cabinet on board, so I could pass the time playing that at least. On the same ferry trip was a young dude of about seven I guess, and he had persuaded his parents to give him a single coin so he could enjoy one brief moment of Metal Slug awesomeness to break the monotony. I offered to play co-op so we started a game together. I was pretty damn good at Metal Slug in those days, and I was able to coach him through it, advise him where attacks were going to come from and when to hang back and let me take the lead, and as a result that little dude managed to get through at least the first four missions with his one coin before he finally died, while his parents had to wait, and wait, and wait for him to be done. He had an awesome time and I felt good about it.

The Pat story cracks me up, but at the same time doesn't surprise me a whole lot. I have the same sentiments on a lot of the more well known retro gaming youtubers when it comes to their "undying allegiance" for Nintendo coverage, when it's practically been done to death. That's why I love this damn channel, giving credit (and well deserved criticism) where it's due to all other classic systems. Especially the love Sega gets. Ha ha. Great episode.

My most favorite gaming memory is NES open. My dad was not a gamer at all and I remember renting this game from blockbuster. He came in and watched me play this golf game (he was a avid golfer) and next thing I know he took the controller and fell in love with the game. We took the game back to the rental store and went to the base exchange (Military brat) and he bought it. Up until the day he died we would always get together and play that golf game. I have a tattoo of Mario from the box art of the game as a remembrance of him.

I remember when I got the Genesis in 1989. It came with Altered Beast and I also had enough money left to buy one game so I got Space Harrier II. My sister, my dad and I were all saying there's no way graphics could ever get better than this. We were obviously wrong. Very wrong.

Paul Johnson I think that, for people who did NOT play Altered Beast when the Genesis was new, it is almost impossible to appreciate what that game meant at the time. I was five, and my brother was eighteen. We both were completely blown away when we heard “POWERRR UP!” coming out of our new game system on Christmas morning, and of course the graphics just blew our minds. My mom was not as impressed, though. And she quickly instituted a “No Altered Beast” rule that stayed in effect whenever she was home. The amazing voice samples that impressed me so much really rubbed her the wrong way.

@@davebladegun3009 That's why Altered Beast was the perfect pack in game when the Genesis launched. At the time of it's release it was the best looking console game on the planet. It looked so close to the arcade version that you would need to have both running side by side to notice the differences. (scaling effects on the bosses aside, I was always bummed that they couldn't find a way to pull that off in software.) It was not a great game, but it was 2 player so both controllers could be used out of the box. It did a perfect job of showing off the increased power over the 8-bit consoles, and it fit the image that SEGA wanted of the Genesis being the arcade at home.

Ah, Midnight Wanderers, my favorite Capcom franchise. I love this game more than... okay, I better not say it or I'll be hanged by Capcom fanboys. These aren't the greatest Capcom games, I'll admit, but I played it so many times, both MW and Chariot, than any other Capcom game (with the exception of SFII, of course, everybody played that game more than any other). I love these games so much that I was even making a fangame. This was a time I really wished Capcom would bring it back but that was impossible because they hate the franchise. Back before MvC3 released, they made an announcement that they were NOT going to put the MW duo in that game. Why the heck would they make an announcement like that? Okay, maybe it wasn't an announcement but perhaps an interview, but still, why it even make such an statement? Oh well. At least they gave us two awesome games I'll cherish forever. Thank you old Capcom and screw you new Crapcom.

This was ten or so years ago. I had found this small game store that operated online and they were selling lots of used and new games. I managed to pick up some kinda few PS2 games there. One day I noticed they had listed Mega Man Zero Collection for DS. I had played them on emulator and loved those games. Didn't have DS though, but wanted to support those who had made those games. So I placed an order and waited. One evening I got a phone call. Caller was owner of that game store. He said sadly they didn't have it on stock anymore and apologized. Then one of the best conversations about games I had happened. We talked about Mega Man, older games, our preferences, our video game game history! One fact he told that suprised me was, that he and his friends had played yearly NHL games on Mega Drive in 1998. I was surprised that there was a NHL game on Mge Drive that late. That phone call lasted for almost an hour. Sadly that store doesn't exist anymore. But I still have this memory I treasure.

Hey I'm from Denver as well. Westminster to be exact (next to water world) in the federal heights area. I know about buy back games, and I also remember power play games. And the giant arcade called the boardwalk. My first real job was at the AMC Westminster promenade 24. And my best gaming memory was going to the power play games in Arvada (by the super saver theater) every Saturday morning (because that was their cheap rent days) and renting games. That's where I discovered games like Actraiser and final fantasy 3. They would also let you play a used game for like 15 mins before buying it.

We very crudely swapped the chips out of the rental with Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball. heh, reminds me of copying rental vhs tapes then swapping the spools round so the shop got the shit copy and I got a pristine one. It didnt matter if macrovision messed up the copy because the store would just think the tape was worn out. Worked great until they started gluing the tapes together (very early 90`s iirc) rather than using screws. Still didnt matter though because by that time I had a sync-pulse generator that made perfect copies of macrovisioned tapes.

I *love* episodes like this one. Sharing memories is a great way to keep them alive while getting others to go “Oh, yeah!” when they see a certain game or games. One memory I have is going to Toys ‘R Us in Auburn, MA one day to pick up Street Fighter II Turbo and NFL Football for the SNES. We all know that SFII Turbo was awesome (and expensive because of the bigger cart)... but, after getting psyched up for NFL Football because of previews in video game magazines... that game SUUUUCKED. Oh, sure, it had plenty of Mode 7 tricks, but the underlying gameplay was terrible. For almost every game I own, there’s a special memory or memories that go with it. It’s sure fun to look back on those, and this episode gives us all a reason to do so. :)
