Twins named Brandon and Landon is something I'd write in as a joke, but I almost garuntee the author did it 100 percent seriously.

Oh yeah, I couldn't believe it was serious. Landon and Brandon, plus their younger sister Glyndon. Wild.

My notes throughout the video: •The intro made me giggle “everyone is wrong” • I am scared of reading dark romance because what is it with non consensual stuff going on… I hate it 🙂↔️ • It feels like they use dark romance to justify predatory behaviour. • So no plot just vibes? Bad vibes at that • Idk its giving fetishisation to me • This was a great video • confusion, confusion, confusion

I don’t at all want to paint with a broad brush when discussing the dark romance genre (and like I said in the video-I’m actually quite eager to get recommendations of better books in the genre). I think the genre enables unique explorations of complex and complicated feelings and experiences within the safety of fiction. That being said, do I think Kent was writing with the level of care required to engage productively in those kinds of topics (plus the complex issues surrounding being queer)? Nope! So, is “it’s just dark romance” an excuse for the writing in this book? I think to some degree, yes, and I said as much. But I do want to be really careful to not assume that’s why anyone else writes in the genre. Furthermore, regardless of Kent’s intentions and execution, I *really* don’t want readers of the genre is general or God of Fury in particular to walk away from this thinking that I’m attacking them. I have a whole lot of critiques of this book, but who reads it isn’t one of them. I do hope that anyone who read this book and enjoyed could listen to this critique and consider it, though.

@ no I did get that message in your video! I’m just scared to my reaction to a bad Apple if we can say it this way. Since I’ve never read dark romance but I’m curious to do so, however non consensual is something that will trigger me and this book and others I’ve watched reviews about concern me 😭 haven’t found a book yet where I feel safe reading. Hope you’ll get good recs from the videos you’ve posted around

Thank you for the dedicated review, did my whole groceries trip while listening 🙏✨️ I remember that in 2007, when getting into fic writing, a kind gay man had a livejournal with very lengthy descriptions of how to portray mm spicy scenes (back when it was called lemon). Honestly I had no business reading that but it did influence my decision-making both for writing and reading. I believe one of the lengthy post's final comments was "when in doubt, just ask someone with experience". I do see discussions of prep or consequences for no prep appearing more in fiction, perhaps too slowly, but it is very much rising. As for dark romance, most books I've liked were spanish oldies, but I have beef with current english market trends because the dark themes seem to bring diminishing returns to the romance. What's sexy about risking my life for a stupid mafia boss? He should at least be capable, at least be worth going to bed with. Dark romance often comes off as "well... who even is having fun here?"

I really hate the recent string of romance books about gay men, written by female authors, that have a bunch of female characters who are only put there to be catty mean girls and romantic rivals, that I've been discovering lately... like c'mon nobody is going to write positive examples of femininity for us.

Not that the examples of masculinity are particularly worthy of emulation either...

Slowly but surely I’m collecting the infinity stones of people rant reviewing this series and I’m so happy because I’ve seen them all over social media, but refuse to read them. I tried to read Brandon’s cousin’s book (the first one in the never ending RKCU) back in the summer, and I could barely get through the 80 pages I read. So I thank you 😅 this video hilarious and thorough!

To your point on the title, I've always viewed the titles as the MMC is the 'deliverer' of the noun (maline, pain, wrath, ruin) but also the noun normally has some tie in to the kink discovery of the FMC. I think if you look at the literal meaning of Fury it does encompass Nico but doesn't touch into the discovery on Bran's end.

I feel like I could talk about so many thoughts brought up from this video for hours. (Like where is the line between fetishization and representation. What other little nuanced details do I not know as a woman and how is that actually discrediting these books) Literally could go on for hours and I would love to see you do these long form videos about other books or thoughts within the publishing and writing space and future. Also.. maybe this was a me thing but i didn’t realize until halfway through the video that you did have cuts, because it listened and flowed like a podcast and a conversation that isn’t cut up. I genuinely can’t wait to keep up with you on here and on your other socials 🥹

Yep, there’s a lot here - somehow more than I could possibly get to even in 100 minutes. I mostly post on TikTok but this book clearly generated a lot of thoughts that I wanted to get out. I was thinking this might be kind of a one-and-done thing on KZbin, but I kind of enjoyed the process of getting this all together and making it, so maybe there will be more coming! And really appreciate the feedback on the editing/production! I have a lot of experience editing for TikTok, but this is my first big project for YT, so I was hoping it would go at least okay!
@dani51652 күн бұрын
@ I could give so many things on the editing and production that i loved 🥰 I think all your experience has paid off and if you do ever do another big one i’m sure you’ll have some new ways to spice it up or make it easier! (My only tip would be the title. Maybe something like “Reina Kent’s God of Fury or God of Nausea” (which you don’t have to use i promise) I was just very confused when i’d first seen it before finally realizing it was a book review 😂 but that might just be a me thing so you absolutely don’t have to!! 💕 Anyway be proud of yourself for this 💕

Thanks for the video! Love your shorter reviews on TikTok, was fun to have a longer one! For a dark recommendation that has lots of fun 🔪 but an actual plot, have you read any Onley James? Her Necessary Evils series is a completed standalone 7.5 books (ok standalone-ish, but it’s you don’t really need to read the previous ones if you don’t want to). Lots of learning to love your psychopath murdering assassin boyfriend there. If you like the rich mafia angle, Kelly Fox’s “Mobsters and Billionaires” series can also be read apart from the other series (lots of cameos at the end of the series if you have read the 2 Wrecked series though) If you want a violent bloodbath, Cora Rose’s “the Silencer” was so good it made me end up going back and reading the entire related series plus Lark Taylor’s related series that Cora borrowed a character from (thank goodness for KU 😂) I’m not a huge dub con fan, so I don’t read much of that, but if I’m ever in the mood, several of Alessandra Hazard’s “Straight Guys” series (all the titles start “Just a Bit …”) have that, including some billionaire and mafia plots too.

I just realized how odd of a choice it is to make one of the characters in a very non con situation ace ngl. Im asexual myself and ngl the dymamic makes me uncomfortable with stuff being forced on him in the beginning. Im not saying its worse cause hes ace cause its awful regardless, but to me it adds an extra layer of " wow thanks i hate that" to the book thats probably more personal for me.
@carterkalchik2 күн бұрын
Yeah, there's a lot of pretty uncomfortable things that Kent sprinkles magic dust on to make it okay. Bran is forced into sexual situations by Niko even though he's ace... but he's also gay AND demisexual AND he's attracted to Niko (even if he didn't realize it)... so... it's okay! All of the men have horrible, violent thoughts and words towards Clara... but she's a bad, manipulative person... and the men are all diagnosed with violent personality disorders... so... it's okay! 🤷♀️
@obi-wan-pierogi2 күн бұрын
@carterkalchik yeah the way the personality disorders are written is kinda gross too and makes people who actually deal with that stuff and manage it with medication look bad. Hate how alot of dark romance uses outdated psych terminology to push their plots forward. Also the way the women are written just to be enemies or bland side characters is very odd and gross. Like can we not get one good supportive well fleshed female character?
@Adelynoir18 сағат бұрын
I was looking for this comment . As a sex positive ace I gotta be in a relationship awhile before I am okay with anything physical. I can believe Brandon is romantically interested in Nico so would want a relationship even though he is in the closet. But the moment his boundaries got crossed that would be the end of it because that is like the opposite of everything we are. Obs not okay period but... no no no no.
