I not only do applesauce in the crockpot, but also add more spices and keep cooking (took 12 hrs for my last batch) and you have homemade apple butter. I had bought some super discounted applesauce on clearance fir my last batch.

Store your cilantro in a jar with water, cover loosely with a plastic bag (I put an elastic band around it over the jar) this helps the leaves from drying out. It will last 10 days or more this way!! I find leaving it in a bag in the veggie drawer it goes slimy fast...or gets lost...or both!! :)

I menu plan for a month at a time. Dinners only. I make sure to have plenty of eggs, cereal and so forth for breakfasts, and sandwich things for lunches. I’ll look at my calendar and assign a meal for each day depending on our activities for that day. I use what I have and shop when I need.

On the last Saturday of every month I take inventory of everything in my fridge, freezer, and pantry. I make a list of all the recipes I can make from those ingredients and then each week I pick four or five meals from the list to cook. Our grocery budget is $600 a month for five people and three cats. I shop Costco once a month ($100), do Walmart pick up twice a month, and shop Kroger every week to stock up on the sales.
@justicedaicy
@justicedaicy 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you sharing that your monthly budget is $600 per month. I have five people in the family also, and four dogs, and find $600 is our average also. Even with careful planning and budgeting, to get what is needed, the total still ends up somewhere around $600 for the month. Mostly, that is spent shopping the weekly sale items at Kroger and Safeway. With prices rising, I'm hoping to still stay at that amount by planning well and rotating through what we already have. I'm located in central Arizona... prices are jumping.

Such a good plan! I do Costco $100 a month also and it’s usually more paper goods and stuff than food so I don’t include that $100 in my “grocery budget.” Our budget for a family of 4 is $100 a week and works well :) I love meal planning and shopping on sale!

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a "REAL" refrigerator with condiments, sauces, varying sizes stuck where they can go.... seriously when I see some of these fridges where they have literally NO condiments I wonder if they're even human. LOL Everyone has a favorite dressing.... I use different dressigns for different things... we always have leftovers... they never have any of that in theirs.

Or the fridge that has zero leftovers... or the ones that take pictures of how it should look and it’s nothing but cokes and highly processed food ... but it’s organized so pretty. I might be guilty of having one of those 'unreal' fridges. I found that if I don't keep it organised and have a place for everything my food wastage is high - organised and clean most of the time means no food wastage (or very little) . I do have condiments though nicely organised - can't fathom storing mustard or tomato sauce (ketchup) in the fridge though - that's weird to me.

I learned from a 1931 Better Homes and Gardens magazines to plan meals twice a week. I plan out weekend meals and Monday and Tuesday and then I plan again using leftovers to make other meals. Our budget runs about $350 for two, two dogs/1cat, personal care items and cleaning supplies. That also nets us items for our longer term storage.

But then I decided to mix it up: with having a prepper pantry, a basic pantry, & 2 freeezers that's always stocked with any canned/dry goods, meats/cheeses we would ever need to make for the meals we like so I just cook out of the pantry. I can make many different kinds of meals this way & saves a lot of money. I just stock up a bunch on these items when they're on sale to keep my stock going. 😀

So if I know I’m going to be busy with assignment and/or activities with my son I know I need to plan ahead for a week or 2 but if I know I just have student teaching ans I’m out by 2:30 I don’t need to “plan” my meals. From a teenage boy mom...if your boys like chili dogs pour some canned beanless chili in your crockpot and nestle a bunch of cheap hot dogs down in there, after everything is warmed through the hot dogs come out coated in a nice little layer of chili then of course they add more chili and toppings. Not healthy of course but a cheap and easy way to feed hungry boys!! We all know how teenage boys can take down some food when they are hungry!!

Well done on helping others with your food storage. That was really kind of you. x When I was a child my Mum worked, so my Dad cooked the tea. We would have the same things every week -Monday was leftover meat from Sunday’s dinner & chips, Tuesday was toad-in-the-hole, Wednesday was shepherd’s pie & what we called greasy gravy. (He didn’t always drain the fat but it was still lovely) The rest of the week we had liver & a couple of other things which I can’t remember anymore. Doing it this way may sound boring to some people, but it made it so much easier for my Dad. I’m really sorry to hear that your Mum & Dad have had COVID. I hope they are feeling better. x I had the vaccine last Thursday. Have your Mum & Dad had theirs yet?

I make Apple sauce in the Fall. I grab either a bushel or half a bushel of apples that are seconds and the most inexpensive from the local farmers market. I just cut up the apples with skins on and fill up my crockpot. Add about a cup of water. I may add cinnamon and blend once cooled in the blender. Freeze in containers or small freezer bags. I like to use as a snack in the winter months or with pork or give to my dogs as a treat. If I give to my dogs i make sure it's pure apples only since I haven't looked into if dogs can have cinnamon.

I menu plan for the month and budget-wis break it down bi-weekly. I try to shop sales which forces me to inventory whats in my freezer and then make menu from there because meats are usually the most expensive. If its a month with a holiday I plan menu around the holiday.

I used my instant pot to make apple sauce. I can't remember the timing, but I used it to cook apples for canning. 2 bushel's of apples, 2 instant pots, my sister's good food mill, no peeling, no coring and I have about a year's supply of apple sauce, apple butter and apple pie filling for abot $40.

If your printer is compatible try HP instant ink, Costco has a prepaid e-card that is great deal! HP sends you a huge cartridge then the printer advises the service when it's low and they mail out replacements with a recycling pouch.

I don't really meal plan. I have a general idea each week. Just me and hubby. He's retired so it's pretty low key. I cook big a couple times per week and we eat all the leftovers. Other days just something from the freezer. No kids to feed anymore. I stock up on meat when it's on sale so I have lots in the stand up freezer. Veggies as well. Sometimes we might just eat pinto beans and cornbread. Nothing too fancy.

I change up my menu planning a lot too, right now I am doing once a month with a big Sams haul at the beginning of the month and weekly trips at the smaller stores. With my growing teenagers and a small daycare my weekly groceries are only lasting about 5 days lately so need to change things up I think! I like that you addressed your budget being larger because of your channel, I have a base family budget in my head but my daycare makes it larger too. I have struggled to try to do $100/per/month this past year, it worked for us a lot of years but not during this season I guess. Kids eating more plus higher grocery costs really add up!

There are only two of us at home now so I only cook three times a week, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. We have leftovers on Monday, Wednesday, and either Friday or Saturday(on the other day we sometimes eat out). I have a meal planner book from CarrieElle. I pencil in a menu plan for a month. The I will make my grocery list (after I shop my pantry) every week. There are sometimes when we will skip a day or so of cooking if we get an overload of leftovers but this plan works for us. It has saved on our grocery bill. If we have company come, I just cook every day. I usually have plenty of ingredients for meals in my pantry and freezer.

To see your variety of foods you get over there is eye opening!! I love watching grocery hauls and would love to try so much now but unfortunately I live in Ireland but when I lived in New York many years ago I ate pretty much none of what I see in grocery hauls. All of that would have been available to me back then but I ate very simple plain foods now I want to try it all 😂

I was thinking as you packed for the food drive that they must have the most enormous food drives in Utah with all the LDS families and their food storage having so much to contribute! You inspired me to clean out my fridge.... I keep putting it off!! I need to do that with the freezer soon too. I don't meal plan too much in advance because I'm just cooking for myself but I do plan once a week and I typically cook a bunch of stuff on Sunday. I'm trying to organize it better so I'm making a bunch of ingredients for multiple meals. (with cross over ingredients). It seems like no matter what week it is though, there is always some kind of taco. :)
