Super impressed with how straight the sides came out, hardly any ripples at all. God, between the plastic and the wheel steering, you're going to have the traditionalists in a lather 😂. With all that roof area and low speed requirements, canalboats have to be an absolute sitter for a few kW of solar, and electric propulsion. Ditch diesel (except for heating and maybe a small genset), go with an inverter and induction hob like half the yachties do to get rid of propane, and it'd be 90% energy self-sufficient for the life of the boat.

this might be the answer to a lot of DIY cannel, house boats. Will have to look into the cost of those HDPE sheets

Nice build. For all the negative comments - I'm off the North coast of Scotland in some of the worst water in the country and the salmon farms use HDPE workloads and have been for a number of years. They need to pass MCA workload code as well as deal with the environment they work in. This build is gonna be fine

What is the weight without ballast? I would guess that it's a lot lighter than steel, and would therefore need some ballast to allow passage under bridges etc.

THis material would have high expansion and contraction. I researched using it for roofing and was advised against it .When it expands the sheets start warping, almost impossible to control. This was found out in the early decking attempts. They learned to control this by adding a material to the plastic mix.

Many companies have been making sea going fast work/rescue boats with HDPE for years. So it would appear that it is the design in terms of ribbing/internal supports etc which are critical to avoid the issues you speak of. Tideman Boats is one maker that springs to mind.

Been waiting a long time for launch day ! I can't believe you put a diesel engine in though, I assumed you would have used solar powered motors in keeping with the green recycled ideal. I have nothing against oil burners, been a truck driver for 39 years and my personal cars are diesel for the last 25 years. Thames Solar electric boats have some great canal boats, some video's here on youtube. Good luck with the project, don't keep us waiting too long.

Thank you , This current one was a prototype and we were advised at the time to put the diesel engine in , we are actually in conversations with Thames solar and others in relation to us making a 57ft narrowboat fully electric that will hopefully be at crick 2025 🙂

We are hoping to have a costing done soon. This was originally a side project,a proof of concept. So as you can imagine, the final cost would be hard to pin down.

Way more than timber, but less than steel.

It certainly has potential as the cost should be much lower than a steel barge. I can see it getting damaged easier than a steel one.
