Just a tip, anytime your pulling something down like those stairs onto grass or a surface that isn’t flat, lay a couple sheets of ply down next to it and smash it down on top of those sheets. Makes it way easier to shovel up into a barrow because you have a hard flat surface to run the shovel along 👍🏼

MDF is basically a sponge so not a great spot next to the toilet will absorb urine and water and swell with time. Plywood would be more suitable. You can clad it in some plastic/veneer to make it last longer. Nikki needs a ring!

agreed, wood isnt ideal, re-purposing offcut tiles would be much more classy, but you can aquaseal mdf and paint it with exterior wood paint so it will cope with the moisture. best option would have been chasing the pipe into the wall, thats probaby a stud wall anyway

You can also get water-resistant MDFs like Medite that'll offer pretty decent longevity in damp conditions.

Not sure on the boxing so close to the loo. Just seems like if there was distance between the boxing and the loo it would be better. I prefer nothing next to the loo. Though I can see its cosmetic reasons as pipes weren't lower in this case

I’m really impressed with how well you and your team work together and how much you’ve achieved so far. I’ve commented before, but I’m reaching out now for some advice. My wife and I are currently renovating a house, and I must admit, it’s been a challenging process. At the start, it seemed like we were both equally invested, but as the project progressed, we realised that we don’t actually work well together. It turns out my wife wasn’t as interested as I originally thought, which has made things difficult. Looking back, I know I made some significant mistakes. The biggest one was not planning properly from the outset. I’ve learnt that planning is absolutely essential in a project like this, and had I known better, I would have taken charge of the planning myself, as I’m capable of doing most of the jobs. It would be incredibly helpful if you could share more about your approach to renovating. Perhaps you could even create a video explaining your methodology, as I’m sure it would be useful to others in a similar situation. I’m especially interested in how you organise everything, from start to finish. How do you plan out a renovation of this scale? How do you decide which tasks to tackle yourself and which to leave to the professionals? It would also be really helpful to know how many tradespeople you typically work with and, as a percentage, how much of the work you do yourself compared to what you outsource. Any advice you could offer would be much appreciated!
@NickyandHarri
@NickyandHarri 2 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks so much for reaching out and we’re really glad you’re finding our videos useful. We’re really sorry to hear about your situation- and that both people aren’t as interested as you originally thought. I think sometimes we all look at ourselves in the middle of a building site that we’re supposed to be ‘managing’ and think ‘what the hell am I doing here?’. It can all be very stressful and overwhelming and I can’t imagine any added pressure of travelling to full time jobs or kids to add into the mix. We can definitely try delve deeper into the behind the scenes of how we manage the renovations, but it’s super hard to capture all our moments (as ideas/plans and conversations often happen when the lights are out at 10pm! 😂 Send us a DM on Instagram with any specific questions/ what we’d do in your situation type stuff and we’d be happy to offer some advice. Thanks again for watching and best of luck ❤️
@abnwtfwc07
@abnwtfwc07 2 ай бұрын
Chris, one thing I'm telling myself whilst doing my own project is, it has to look a lot worse first to look a lot better. It's sometimes overwhelming looking at a building site in your house but just keep at it and think of the end goal. Don't try doing everything yourself and end up burning yourself out. Good luck.

Great work guys, I love watching your videos and your enthusiams is infectious :). Aren't you afraid of thieves breaking and stealing your tools? I am a security engineer, breaking nowdays is a on a rise. With the project of this scale I would always advise to run alarm cables at the time of electrical rewire. You dont have to spend tons of money for big alarm system but with cables in place you can always expand later on. Simple panel+ keypad and you can even make it hybrid by adding some wireless detectors for tool shed.

I suggest harry changes the way he swings the sledgehammer to save energy and damage to his body. Pick the hammer up with your right hand just below the head and left hand at the bottom of the handle, then throw the head with the right hand and slide the right hand down the handle to meet your left hand on impact of the head. It makes the sledge much lighter to lift and saves so much energy and more power in the hit.

Another great video guy’s! Your making so much progress & it’s fantastic to be on this journey with you both. Nicky you said that you & Harri are the most inpatient people we’d ever meet & yet u’ve waited 10yrs for a proposal. I’d say that’s very patient!! It took my husband 5yrs to propose & I thought that was bad enough 😂😂 Seriously you are a lovely couple which I think I’ve said to you before in my comments. You work so well as a team, you clearly have fun together & I’m sure you have arguments from time to time like everyone but there’s so much love there you can see it. I think you definitely have the foundations(no pun intended) of a great marriage so "Harri" you most definitely! need to propose to Nicky. And I hope you get her a lovely sparkly ring to match her wonderful sparkling personality. Have a great week & I look forward to next Sunday’s video. xx

Tip with the scrap metal, divide it up in to smaller batches, stick it in a plastic box and leave it in the van for the runs to the tip. If you’re ever dumping materials that your recycling centre make you pay for, a nice box of copper cable and pipe as a bargaining chip has gotten me off of a fair few bills, probably more than I’d have been given from the scrap yard.

Great progress guys. Couple of things. Make sure you cut all of the fittings off of the copper. Bare copper will be worth a lot more than if they weigh it all in as brazing. It’s worth hundreds of ££ so keep it all safe. A4 Metal Recycling is the place to take it. Also, you need to fill in a CIL form. I expect your architect has done that but it’s down to the homeowner to check it’s right or you will get clobbered.

I know you are on a limited budget but i think you should seriously consider removing the entire second story and rebuilding to the limits of the pre-extension first level. Then you could add an attic above the second level and add so much more value than just adding dormers to the existing structure which is already not easy or cheap. Remember cheaper doesnt mean easier or more value! It just means cheaper, thats it and nothing else. Also given the size of the property the extension is really small. If you extended along the length of the existing building not only would it be bigger it would flow more naturally towards the rest of the property. Dont underestimate the value of indoor/outdoor flow!
@NickyandHarri
@NickyandHarri 2 ай бұрын
Honestly, we’ve thought of it and we’ve thought of a double story side extension- but money right now really isn’t available for all of that work. We don’t want to try running before we can walk, so wanted to just add a single story extension to dip our toe into the construction world.
@john_smith1471
@john_smith1471 2 ай бұрын
I think upstairs was added later, which is why the stairs were shoe horned into the lounge, it’s a room in the roof, not a proper storey, and of that era likely no proper insulation, those rooms leak heat in the winter and are ovens in the summer, I doubt nowadays planning would permit such a large glazed area, but they have to work with what they’ve got.

progress looks epic, 15:37 but i would put the stop cock in the vanity unit. also that looks like a *lead* water main pipe 🚰, i would give the water board a call asap and get that upgraded _for free_ under the _lead pipe replacement scheme_

When doing the time lapses could you add a small timer too so you get an idea of how long a particular job takes/took you?

Great idea Henry- would defo be useful for other renovators. Can maybe add a ‘multiplier’ in the bottom corner so you know how fast it’s sped up!!

Wouldn't it be better for the kitchen extension to be same level with the rest of the house, for rest of mind with regards damp and drainage

Hi guys. Really the highlights now of my Sunday! I have a quick question... Do you guys worry about asbestos when you do all the DIY. I looking at a bungalow in Kent and have been told it has asbestos.... Any insight much appreciated and keep up the great work.
@NickyandHarri
@NickyandHarri 2 ай бұрын
We defo do worry about it - but usually we look it up before touching anything! If it’s likely asbestos - we won’t touch it! In an ideal world we would have an asbestos survey done

@@NickyandHarri ah that great to hear. At least you guys know what to look for... I'm not super sure what it looks like as it comes in different shapes and forms I think... So anytime I see dusst.... I get hyper worried lol. Maybe a survey will give me more confidence to get stuck in. Really love what you guys are doing! Family and friends have tried to talk us out of a bungalow purchase, but something about them right??? Once your in one... A 3 bed semi/teracced just simply won't do 😜
