After re-watching season 4 recently, I realised why they don't put too much of a focus on the previous era drivers (Seb, K-Mag, Alonso, etc). The DTS target market isn't really hardcore F1 fans of old, but rather newer and more casual watchers. And to get the latter more into the sport, it seems more profitable to follow the storylines of young, up and coming drivers as they progress through the seasons rather than documenting the history of an older driver well past their prime. Also, the younger drivers with Lewis and Daniel being the exception, are more relatable to the new audiences of F1.

The thing is newcomers eventually learn of these stories, and when they look to the next drive to survive they'll expect certain shoutouts. I think the issue is not that it has evolved to be for the masses. The problem is that they skip on real storylines which everyone was following through the season and include imaginary storylines. For Eg - pitching two drivers in one episode to have similar or opposing journeys while no fan would ever put those together. Or for Eg Skipping the absolute chaos that was Sochi in 2021 and focusing on Mazepin's amazing P18.

Good: The two middle episodes about Piastri/Mclaren/Alpine/Ricciardo/Gasly. Good interviews with Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz throughout. The Porpoising meeting. Alonso declaring himself a villain! The Haas and Tsunoda episodes. Bad: The Perez episode drilled into us that Checo had a terrible start to 2022, and was in danger of losing his drive when we all know he had a great start and was even a championship contender early on. Christian Horner felt like he was in the season more than all other TPs put together. No Vettel focus in Abu Dhabi. Overuse of Silverstone as a focus race, rather than variety.

I feel that when I first watched DTS I was much more naïve about F1, I’ve watched F1 since I was very young but never been properly into it. DTS was a really good way into F1, it’s allowed me to understand the hierarchies in F1 and the role of money etc. Look, they dramatise a lot (i’ve rewatched it and season 1 is painful. especially the focus on carlos sainz in season 1 where he is ‘opposing’ alonso) its pretty cringe. DTS is ultimately a huge advert for F1. It’s difficult to watch once you know the foundations of the sport but realistically it is a great way for people to get into the sport. People argue it’s introduced new ‘toxic’ fans but i completely disagree. DTS has allowed for a more accessible understanding of the sport. It’s a strange series honestly but it allows for more people to enjoy the sport we all love. very odd but maybe for a beginner and not for an F1 nerd

I have a feeling that they're heavily limited by the number of teams they can follow for each race. As I understand, they follow specific teams during a weekend. Can't get a lot of footage of an amazing race specific storyline like the kmag pole if they're hypothetically following McLaren the whole weekend. Best they can do is cover it with post race and in race footage, but if they want more of a story outside of the race it's gonna be a lot of film teams invested, and that's if the teams would agree having a film crew every race weekend
@GloomGaiGar Жыл бұрын

DTS is fun to watch to get extra access to the paddock, but I don't take any of it seriously. The first few seasons were so full of videos of one race, and then team radio and commentary from another race. Hell, sometimes even 2 or 3 races worth of videos and highlights all in the same clip of one race. So yeah, it's fun and entertaining because I love F1, but I don't take any of it as fact. Just something to hold me over until the season starts. You gotta remember, this isn't for the hardcore fans, we know everything that happens the second it happens and if you're like me, you probably spend a bunch of time researching incidents or storylines the moment they happen. This is more for non-fans or the average fan who probably see a few races a year but don't really get into it like the hardcore fans do. So I always go into the DTS season with that in mind and temper my expectations.

I'm of the opinion DTS producers won't budge with their direction, because honestly, not enough of the fanbase are speaking up ala widely panned first iteration of Sonic in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer. And until the entire F1 fandom collectively make noise to Stefano and DTS, we'd still be getting the same mediocre stuff season after season. I bet most don't realize or forgot how multitudes of fans speaking up can at times create change beneficially. Sonic the Hedgehog movie being one of them, other was *cough* Zack Snyder's Justice League *cough*. If you're a fan of reading this, compare the complaint noise DTS is getting vs the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer, and it would make sense why the former hardly changed how they direct things.

The lack of anything from Brazil was terrible. The KMag pole and the Max "I'm not letting Sergio past" stuff not being on there was bull. I felt it was almost as if Max would only appear if he was shown in a positive light

I'm a little over half way through this season and I'm more in line with Matt on this. I'm really enjoying the show! I like that it's more story based then drama based. I think a 7 is fair but I'll give it more of a 7.5 from what I've seen so far.

Well I watched the first and second seasons while in lockdown, but only cause I was craving F1 content, but then it kinda went meh and I haven't finished season 3 yet nor season 4, and seeing how much thing they missed in this seasons and it was one of the bests, can't say i'm that looking forward to watch the rest

I am shocked but also at the same time not really shocked that they didnt mention for example: Mercedes developing really well and that turned into george’s first win, kmag’s pole at the same race. No red bull drama like the check and max at Brazil and the whole “that shows us who he really is” drama. Nothing on seb retiring, yes he does not take part but noit even some mini montage or whatever. I also feel like they painted Mclaren as the bad guy a little bid for letting Riccardo go but if you look at the standings he was demolish by Norris (7th with 122 points) to Daniel’s 11th with 37 points.

I can't, for the life of me figure out how DTS does not do a whole episode about Seb's retirement.
@radamus210 Жыл бұрын
Oh man, so on the fence about this one. I watched the whole 21 season after binging all 3 DtS seasons. It was quite a bit different view as I'd seen it all (2021 F1 season) so I was able to understand why true F1 fans slam it so hard trying to bring in drama that doesn't exist. But the reality is, that's what ALL media does, bring drama into it with mountains of speculation and contrived intrigue off the smallest tweet or Insta post even down to liking a post someone else made - typical stuff. So yeah, Season 4 was a bit drab for me but certainly had my fav episodes while wondering while other segments were made when there was so much to choose from. What DTS did initially, is introduce me back into F1, As a kid watching from early 80s (it was on TV) Through Michael's reign and I faded away. The loss of Senna hit hard, like losing Dale in NASCAR - So DTS was a way of rebirth for me as a fan. It introduced the teams, the drivers, the rules, the new cars but above all, never before known safety - and the personalities. Never before in F1 did you see anything about the drivers, teams to create fans at least not in the US, unless one showed up on Carson or Letterman and the others and it would be the season Champion. We saw a lot of Michael. Everyone in the world knew the name Michael Schumacher and Lewis. That's like saying Andretti, internationally recognized. So now, DTS has put a personality on the players and that's what fans love and hate about their favorites and the ones they respect and despise. Division! OK, now we've got something! HAHA! If I had been 20 again, and a Lewis fan in Abu Dhabi 2021, I would've been rioting throwing beer - but today, not a Lewis fan, only an admirer respectful of his accomplishments, I said to my wife "Well, the race officials just brought a shitstorm down upon their heads for that one and frankly, I think they deserve whatever happens" The way that race was ended was a complete disaster ran by chickens running around with their heads cut off.... It was jaw dropping. But it's not going to change one second of my day so break out the popcorn 😀 And it's been fun ever since and I didn't miss a second of televised F1 in 2022 so I'm ready to go! And hey, People are going to watch DTS, it's in their DNA, they can't not watch it and will lie a lot of of them and say they didn't, fk that.... but they did..... yeah, no matter what you do say about it, I'm going to watch it 😂🤣😂

Im not super mad about them not featuring Vettel. I think he got so much praise, respect, and emotional goodbyes at the end of the season, that anything Netflix tried to do to match that, would have come up flat anyway.

I was actually hoping for a change that they featured Hannah Schmitz, at least for a couple of minutes. Red Bull was an absolute beast in 2022 and she had a LOT to do with that in terms of strategy, and you never hear from her and I think she appears only once and way back in the background of a cameo to Christian. The same goes for Adrian Newey, nothing at all, basically. Everyone with a minimum idea of how the last championship went knows how massive roles they both played in Red Bull success. In the case of Hannah, it was also an absolutely brilliant opportunity to feature a female having an outstanding performance in a practically man-dominated sport (excluding the drivers, of course). In terms of the drama and BS, I think they were better than previous seasons, but I feel there was so much material to feature and exploit... 6 out of 10 is still a bit generous to me... I´d say a 5 is all they get.

I felt that there were a lot of topics that were conspicuously missing, like Seb's retirement, anything about Williams or Alfa or Alpha, or even Haas in Brazil (like Hamilton in Brazil in 2021 overtaking 21 out of 20 cars over the two days).. But I'm glad that Max is back on the chair. He's too important for F1 not to be present in the series. In any case, we all know who the star of the series is: Gunther Steiner!

I'm still not watching DTS... maybe not ever 💀, but I'm glad to hear that it's *trying* to present a more holistic view of Formula 1. It may not be *succeeding*, but I appreciate it for trying.

Vettel's retirement should be more important. They did the same thing when Kimi retired. I don't recall even a single mention of that.
@danimalplanet18 Жыл бұрын
They should expand: drive to survive really is the annual "F1 for beginners" but in deep portraits of the F1 drivers and teams are missing. On top, they clearly have deals with a couple of people to be highlighted more than others, always focusing in on Gunther Steiner, Christian Horner, Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo. Even the private conversations are scripted. The only enjoyable episode was where they followed Szafnauer, when Alpine essentially lost two out of three drivers; it at least had some 'behind closed doors' material.

I'm soooo glad they cut down on some of the BS. It was so disappointing to see season 4 drop the ball on a historically crazy season. They had all the drama they needed, but made up shit for half the season anyway. I'm hoping this new season is a trend starter and not a fluke

After watching season 5, Netflix auto played season 1 and holy shit the cars have paint all over them! The proper Papaya all over the McLaren and the deep gloss red looked great! I think the new Ferrari looks amazing but the disappearing of gloss paint and full bodies of paint of shocking to the eye when watching season one of DTS.

Not having seb covered disappointed me, but also they didn't cover how max didn't want to help Sergio towards the end of the season and that drama could have been a good lead to drama for next season between them.
