Local triathlons (typically Sprint or Olympic distance), not Ironman-branded, are like $40-100 to enter and you can race on whatever equipment you have available.

Triathlon is spelled incorrectly in the title, sorry for pointing it out. Also, I don't really feel like you talked much about triathlon, more about running. For those who are interested in triathlon, I suggest you look into sprint triathlons. 400 meter swim typically, 12-15 mile bike, 5k run. These events are great whether you're a seasoned triathlete, or just someone who wants to get fit. They're not super expensive, and you're more than welcome to ride your road bike (I do) rather than having to spend money on a tt bike. Or you can put aero bars on your road bike and split the difference. I like the cross training aspect of them. The only drawback is doing one in cold weather. You have to swim first, and getting out of the water and onto the bike can be a bit miserable in the winter. Fortunately I live in Florida, so our cold weather is never too bad and doesn't last long.

Never raced in one, but from my outsider's perspective it seems like triathlon is the only discipline that's more obsessed with gear than cycling. I can't imagine Ironman's commercialization of the sport has helped in that regard.
@shepshape258511 ай бұрын
@@Pellagrah I would say you’re right about that. Of course triathlon is a rather elitist sport, so there’s no shortage of companies trying to grab their share of the money. Special shoes with little loops on the heel that you can rubber band to your bike to make transitions faster. Then of course there’s the whole TT bike, and then the plethora of running shoes. And let’s not forget the $600 you should spend on a watch that will keep track of everything. Oh, and the wet suit if you live somewhere where it’s cold enough for one to be allowed. But as in cycling, there are options. I wear no wet suit, I ride my road bike, and my running shoes are just regular running shoes, not triathlon specific.

Sprint triathlons are the only distance where any time advantage gained by gear superiority (mostly on the bike) can be negated by a poor transition performance. More than likely though, the event is usually won by swimming performance. I’ve done more than my fair share and I always advise people that unless you are in the 75th percentile out of the water, the rest just doesn’t matter-if overall results are your priority.
@shepshape258511 ай бұрын
@@FuriousFilipino It’s been my experience that most sprint triathletes are runners mostly and hate the bike. Being a cyclist first, I usually place near the top on the bike only to give up that time on the run.
@FuriousFilipino11 ай бұрын
@@shepshape2585 that’s an interesting perspective, but how does your running and swimming split compare to the median? If they are within 15% of the median times, it just means you are a faster cyclist and not necessarily that everyone else is a “runner.” If your run pace is faster than 8:00/mile and you’re getting dusted, then most are indeed runners. Global avg pace for sprints tri runs is around 12:00/mile, which is pretty slow (I’m a former XC runner).

Sooooo... why are triathlon fees so damn expensive? Forgive my ignorance, but where does that money go?
@glyndonwakeman742011 ай бұрын
Surprisingly expensive to get public roads closed for a 180km bike leg, and a marathon on the same day. Unlike a bike race the field is spread out over hours with the bike leg typically closing 10 hours after race start or thereabouts. Water safety, police, 'donations' to many community groups to man aid stations, fees to local government. Lots of other expenses. That's Ironman. Local sprint distance races are another story...I'd call them under-rated
@ynie110 ай бұрын
Yep, plus unlike a marathon, which can hold tens of thousands of participants, a triathlon can only hold about 2500 max. Thus, the cost of those road closures gets spread out over a smaller group making each participant WAY more than a marathon.

YOu have to do a race that costs you 700€ (early entry) to qualify for a race that costs you about 1200€ (you have to pay immediately when you take the slot for world champs. you literally have to swipe your credit card next to the stage). That first race may cost you close to 1000 extra depending on travel and accomodation. The world champs will ruin you financially. Still. If i ever were to qualify for kona, i'd take on debt to do it. Triathlon is insane and unreasonable. I just bought a set of aero wheels that might(MIGHT) make me 5 minutes faster over an ironman distance. It doesnt even make sense.

@@davidb.9110 ok but how does that have anything to do with something being overrated. If you aren’t a good swimmer you prob shouldn’t do a sport with swimming. If you’ve never taken sky diving lessons I probably wouldn’t recommend trying that either but it doesn’t mean it’s overrated.

Triathlon and especially the Ironman distance that you were talking about is not overrated. The hardest one day event in the world. Expensive, but amazing. Duathlon is for triathletes who are rubbish at swimming and don't want to put the time in to improve. Parkrun, probably one of the best communities around and can all be done and finished before lunch, whats not to love.
