It is a common misconception that Koreans prefer fried chicken for dinner. In reality, they savor fried chicken at pubs, accompanied by beer and in the company of friends. Fried chicken is not typically regarded as a dinner meal in Korean culture.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 24 күн бұрын
The place we went for fried chicken was a pub. We don't have friends in South Korea, but we didn't want that to stop us from trying fried chicken. We can't imagine having it as a second meal after dinner, even as late-night food. It was a fun experience for us, though, but we'd probably try somewhere else next time. I also think that beer might have cut some of the sweetness of the chicken, but we really aren't beer drinkers. Thanks for watching and for the insight. Here's a link to our two episodes from Busan if you're interested in watching them! -Judy 🎥 South Korea 🇰🇷 video series: kzbin.info/aero/PLNT98lWfwdF0f9CUrzAmPwQ8yzyJBHan7&si=vhBQX8rkLlVSJytX

In terms of Korean food, every dish is meant to be shared, except the bowl of rice and individual soup (gukbap) in front of you. Think about when you order Chinese food where everyone takes a litte of everything ordered, or think of Italian food where the main dish is a communal dish, or just think of the Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone doesn't get their own turkey.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 24 күн бұрын
Thanks for this information; it's helpful to know. Restaurant culture doesn't always work the way you are suggesting, though. I guess it depends, but when we used to order Chinese food, each person got their own entree and took home their own leftovers. Others at the table might take a taste of others' food, but communal meals stopped happening a long time ago for us when we ordered from restaurants. When we were in Taiwan, we tried to split meals and it was not okay to do it. While we definitely eat "family style" for home-cooked meals, we aren't used to doing that at restaurants unless we are ordering tapas. But your explanation makes sense when it comes to Korean food for sure! -Judy
@rxlxviii
@rxlxviii 24 күн бұрын
@@FindingGinaMarie I understand why you prefer not to share communal dishes, but you can always ask for an ahp jyuhp shi (literally meaning plate in front), which is an individual plate foreach person and spoon/ladle the communal food for each individual. And due to so many tourists visiting Korea these days, I'm sure that most restaurants will accommodate the request.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 18 күн бұрын
It's not that we don't want to share them, but we didn't understand that's a common thing to do in a restaurant. However, I think that seems best suited when you have more than two people or you can end up with too much food, especially when it's a woman and man who don't need a ton of calories in their day! But this is great information to have! -Judy

Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know we aren't alone on this! The second time we visited Italy we decided we needed to try an appetizer as well as a primi and secondi. No, we didn't! And of course the waiter would always tell us that the pasta portion was small. No it wasn't! We have learned our lesson for the most part. My Italian tutor mentioned that even Italians want to feel like they get plenty of food for the price, but we don't need that much food, especially if we want to have dessert! We felt awful about leaving behind all that fried chicken, but there was no way we could eat it all and we didn't enjoy it enough to take it with us. I'd almost be willing to pay full price for half portions at restaurants or to have restaurants allow you to share a dish (but as we found in Taiwan, they really don't like you to do that!). -Judy

Thank you so much, Dan, we appreciate your perspective! We've been on some fast travel, so apologies for our delayed response. After Seoul, we spent 10 days in the charming Orvieto, then met our daughter in Rome, spent time on the Amalfi Coast, are currently in Florence and doing some day trips, and then a few days with Verona as our home base for some day trips. Our daughter wants to be exposed to as much as possible, which isn't our preferred way to travel, but it has been wonderful to see Italy through her eyes and visit some places we haven't made time for yet. We absolutely want to visit NZ and Melbourne specifically. We visited Sydney in 2019 before we started full-time travel and loved it. It was our hope to get there in February/March this year, but it was so expensive that we had to pivot. The area is definitely on our bucket list (including Fiji!). -Judy

Plastic surgery seems to be much more common in South Korea than in the US, in part due to the K-Pop culture. In fact, I was surprised to read that many students get plastic surgery as a graduation gift. It's often seen as almost an expectation that if you can afford to tweak your looks, you should do it. I don't know how much cheaper it is because I think it somewhat depends on what the surgery is that is being done. However, because of its mainstream popularity, there's some very advanced techniques that are used in South Korea as well. Here's an interesting article: www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/women-and-girls/south-korea-cosmetic-surgery-double-eyelid/ Thanks for watching! -Judy

Of course it was meant to feed a crowd! 🤦‍♀️ Seoul was an unexpected gem for us. We thought it would be like Tokyo, which was worth seeing, but far from our favorite city. On the other hand, Seoul was incredible. It was too expensive for a month, but we will be back and give it more time. Thanks as always for watching! -Judy

We typically are too much of wimps to be out much past 8 or 9pm! 😂 Although it sounds like Seoul is lively around the clock, we found it a much milder and pleasanter city compared to Tokyo. It was such an unexpected surprise compared to what we had read about it. We definitely want to return and explore more! We loved Busan as well and are glad we made time for both! -Judy 🎥 South Korea 🇰🇷 video series: kzbin.info/aero/PLNT98lWfwdF0f9CUrzAmPwQ8yzyJBHan7&si=vhBQX8rkLlVSJytX

13:50 If you are a traveler, you should eat the food of the country you visit. To eat Chinese food in Korea is to go to Italy and go to a Spanish restaurant.

Sorry, Kent, but we were in South Korea for a full month and ate at many South Korean restaurants. THIS restaurant specifically mentioned that they were KOREAN noodles. Our first choice restaurant was closed when we arrived (by only a few minutes) and we had been walking along the stream for a while. We stopped into a place that looked very local and did our best. -Judy 🎥 South Korea 🇰🇷 video series: kzbin.info/aero/PLNT98lWfwdF0f9CUrzAmPwQ8yzyJBHan7&si=vhBQX8rkLlVSJytX

As our "First time in South Korea" video from Busan shows, we spent time with a local family in Busan and I read some books to help us prepare for our time in South Korea. Sure there are political issues and nationalism, but there is some degree of economic interdependence, and cultural exchange (K-pop, Japanese anime, and Chinese cinema). Also, Japanese and Chinese food was EVERYWHERE. -Judy 🎥 South Korea 🇰🇷 video series: kzbin.info/aero/PLNT98lWfwdF0f9CUrzAmPwQ8yzyJBHan7&si=vhBQX8rkLlVSJytX

Maybe so, but the restaurant specifically called them Korean noodles. It was a local restaurant and we were tired after our long walk along the stream. We had tried to get into a different restaurant, but it closed before we got there. This looked like a nice, unpretentious place to eat and the food was really good. -Judy

During your travels, I bet no one native to the countries complained about cultural appropriation. In fact, people like it when they are able to share their culture and you participate in their culture. What people don't like is if you disrespect their culture which is usually done by the people who complain about cultural appropriation. They would say things like, "well, we do it this way where I'm from" without even trying to understand why things are being done a certain way.

Glad you did Seoul before leaving Asia! When visiting S.Korea, one must spend equal time in both Seoul and Busan, they are special in their own way. Wish you both a safe journey to Europe! But if you can, please go back to Asia and visit China. I am sure Kevin would be so surprised to see how modern/futuristic China has become!

Thanks so much. We definitely would like to return to Seoul to spend more time there. It's tricky for us to visit Mainland China. We've been warned that our tech can be compromised there (I worked in cybersecurity for several years), so it's a risk we are very cautious about taking. -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie I think Europe is definitely worth A visit. After you live there and visit there many times, your "Polly Anna" point of view couldn't be more incorrect. You might want to study the TRUE history or Europe.

We've spent a significant time in Europe, so we aren't ignorant travelers. There's a lot of unpleasant history, politics, and wrongdoing scattered throughout the WORLD, but we try to learn about the history and culture of everyplace we visit so we can be global learners and travelers. And quite frankly, we've found that people everywhere are all the same-super kind people and bad apples can be found anyplace you visit. -Judy

This is good information. I can't imagine eating fried chicken *after* dinner, even if it's a late-night bite. Well, maybe I can ;) We aren't beer drinkers, but we still wanted to try a pub and have some of their chicken (the place we went definitely had a pub vibe and had locals, even though it was only around 4pm). We saw the table next to us get ONE of our dishes and share it amongst three grown men, so we definitely goofed. We should have realized from the price that we would be getting a huge meal. Thanks for watching! -Judy
