Electric winches do not make you less of a sailor! Especially as world cruisers and live-aboards, it's all about function and keeping it as easy as possible (in my opinion). If hardened sailors are against this, then let's hope they are sailing with charts, compass and sextant, instead of those pesky chart plotters, automatic pilots, radios, internet, wind generators, solar panels etc. This is the 21st century and sailing has matured and to be honest, become a lot safer, so let the luddites bleat all they want guys. I'm with you!

I believe that virtually all southerlys have lifting keels. I was involved with making a plug/mould/first few of a yacht, that were later renamed as a southerly range boat, these were slightly unusual as they had long deep keels.

I agree fully with Nick on needing a larger boat for the Pacific and Asia. If I could manage the cost, I'd purchase a Southerly 540 (by Discovery), mainly due to the swing keel. I also love its nav station high on the starboard side. I would change the helm station to just one at the port side companionway bulkhead under a large hard bimini, the main mast to one with roller furling, a self tacking jib and two side by side genoa staysail roller furlers. The two staysails would be used separately depending on wind direction and also for downwind wing on wing with swing-out whisker poles attached at the beam rail on each side.

I'm with you on the importance of the cockpit, since it really is where sailors want to be most of the time. It drives me crazy looking at boat porn - er, online boat ads - and they show the salon and cabins, but very little about the cockpit and rigging. Thanks for the tour.
@tbonemc21186 жыл бұрын
For a first impression the most noticeable aspect of your boat is the design layout. For an aft cockpit boat I can't think of another at anything like the size of yours with such an amazing aft cabin and still find room for two heads. Innovative design is rare but surely everything isn't built for the charter market. I really like the Sirius 40DS for its design but only for cooler climates and like yours I can't afford that either. Maybe I can win the lottery twice. I never realized how tiny Terysa was so you'd better look after her well. Thanks for the walk through.

Hi Nick. I agree with most of what you say, and when you study the design details and standards that Southerlys conform to, they're better than their famous aluminium French counterparts that can't classify to RCD offshore requirements even after Jimmy Cornell's endorsements. However, it always makes me wonder how much designers really understand about the sea when so many boats are built with open racing cockpits, and then as a cruiser you have to spend your ownership period on the boat living under a cockpit tent/sprayhood combo that has to be renewed at astonishing cost every four years. Sailing SV Bora Bora has a decent setup, although it's an old Van de Stadt Trintel, and the Moody Halberdier is a great one, and, at Southerly end of the budget, the Amels (as per Delos), which have some canvas but a solid sprayhood. There is no way that professional mariners would ever put up with having to operate in exposed conditions without recourse to a sheltered watch position, so why aren't they included in cruising designs? My own philosophy on cruising is that the boat and gear that's on it are going to have to keep me going for the longest possible time as I'm usually alone, and they're going to have to keep functioning, at least at a basic level, when I can't. One thing that will reduce a humans performance at a staggering speed is cold and exposure, both of which are guaranteed by the inadequate designs of modern sailing cruisers. I'm not sure how we get designers and builders to remedy that, but it certainly comes into play when I look for a boat.
@bophoto5 жыл бұрын
Ted, ive beating down that path, exact same questions, at this point my take-away is "looks" Most pleasure boats are sailed on beautiful sunny days with a soft breeze, or raced on days with more wind hopefully. Bottom line is that look beautiful, sleek etc, trawlers and containership are commercial rigs, and are ugly at best. At this point Im kinda resigned to buy the boat I think I want, slightly used, and turn around and put a hard top dog-house on the cockpit by the stairs, kinda style AMEL, you can then zip sides on for more protection. just my thoughts.

Hi Nick and Terysa. This really is a beautiful boat! Why not move into a larger Southerly rather than a Cat? For the same money (or less,) you can move up to a larger Southerly, like a 47' with a 15' beam and a 3' draft? I'm sure it sails better than a 45' Cat, and it seems like you are really into "the feel" of sailing.
@thebentley715 жыл бұрын
One of the most beautiful sailboats I have ever seen. I really like the lift keel & being able to go into shallow areas. I'm a fan of wood & laminated composite wood boats. Could this boat make a voyage to Antarctica or the Artic areas. Is the hull fairly strong & able to resist an iceberg rub or slow speed strike. I was wondering what a used smaller Southerly sailboat would cost, & what is their smallest version. Thanks for the video it was very interesting with lots of good info. May peace, love, happiness, & health be abundant in your lives. Bentley.

@Blazerade136 жыл бұрын
Great video. I currently own a cat but still appreciate the feeling of sailing a mono. I am impressed with your boat, especially the lifting keel. I would agree it leads the pack under 40 feet. I could be tempted back to monos if the designers adopted some of the liveability principles which are now commonplace on catamarans. For example ALL sheets, clutches, winches etc should be aft near the wheels, leaving the forward part of the cockpit and the coamings clear for living. Not just electronics etc. Coachroof winches are a pain if you have guests. The Hanses are now doing this. Also it should be easy to transition between cockpit and saloon. Without descending Mt Everest with near vertical steps and a 5 foot drop. Beneteau now have 45 degree steps and no cockpit 'aft cabin headroom bulge' and the Sense range do this particularly well. Anyway, just my thoughts. So when all this comes together with a lifting keel, as I am sure it will, who knows?
@sailingrubyrose6 жыл бұрын
Hey David- YES, I definitely don't like all the lines, clutches, etc within the actual cockpit. I'd prefer to have a clear 'living' space and a separate 'sailing' space. But that doesn't seem very commonplace in monos, you're right.
