Hey guys, thanks for the video. I call you "my Spanish friends". Let me watch my Spanish friends hahaha. Question : For Rosetta Stone...Is it $199 one time or is it a yearly subscription, meaning every year I pay $199?? I just want to be sure before going for it. Please let me know.

My dad is from Kazakhstan and my mum is from Cuba, they met in the 80s and could not communicate in a mutual language, love prevails! Neither country worked for them due to politics, so we ended up in Canada! My folks have been together and in love for 40 years and both speak Spanish Russian and English fluently :) They are now planning for Spanish citizenship and to move to Tenerife, Canary Islands, since my grandma is from Spain :) Have you guys been there?

The key to an international marriage is living in each other's country. I lived in the Dominican Republic for four years before getting married. Understanding culture is key. We just celebrated our 27th anniversary this year.

The biggest challenge I have found is raising kids; balancing living in the moment and structure. I have 4 kids and 2 are very Dominican and two are very American. But they all agree that the Dominican side of the is more fun. I agree too.

Yoli and James: My late wife and I SO enjoyed watching your videos together. If Tam was still with us I have no doubt this one would be her all-time favorite. I'll be taking advantage of the Rosetta Stone offer as I plan to emigrate to Galicia (to be near my daughter and grandson) as soon as the pandemic travel restrictions have ended. We'll see if an old dog can learn a new language. Bless you both!

I relate to this video so much as somebody in an international marriage and an expat. I am American and my wife is from Belarus and we faced a lot of challenges. Many of which you nicely articulated. We lived in the US together for a while and experienced the exact power dynamic that you both did. Now we actually live in Italy so we are both foreigners here and face additional challenges. Though I spoke Italian and have citizenship from before we came here, we are in neutral territory and more or less on an equal playing field. Neither one of us feels like we are actually ourselves here. My wife would love nothing more than to go to Belarus and visit family and friends, but with the pandemic raging combined with widespread protests, it's not on the cards for a while. We had no friends here in common and had to start from scratch. Though having kids made that process easier since we see the same people every day and our kids are the same age. Anyway, just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos and relate to so much of what you are going through there.

100% agree with you guys... I’m Maltese, wife is Spanish. We met in Malta when she was on holiday but we always lived in Spain. What I find interesting is that she grew up in Catalonia but we now live in Seville and I have a better grasp of Andaluz culture more than she does, although I do 100% agree about the feeling of empowerment when you’re in your home country. Maybe we should move to Malta for a few years 😀

I’ve had an international marriage myself and I understand everything you’ve shared. When you mentioned how difficult it was to reveal your true self because of the language barrier, I could relate wholeheartedly. It was hard to reveal my funny side or intellectual side because I didn’t know how to communicate at my optimum best. Equally, it was very difficult to understand context when I first began to learn English. There were times that I felt frustrated and lonely. Having different cultures in a marriage can pose a challenge but, if both people in a partnership remain curious and respectful of the other’s ways, it can be rewarding because it can expand your own world view and understanding. It won’t work if one of the partners remains closed and unwilling to accept something different, but you and Yoly do seem to be a very interactive couple and naturally curious people, so you make it work. In reality, every morning (consciously or unconsciously), you know that your partner is the one for you and willing to meet whatever challenges are in front of you. Happy Anniversary to you both and may your “spanglish” continue to thrive for a lifetime.

As always a great video and this one relates to my wife and I. I am an American and I wanted to see the world without joining the Navy!. I got a contract to be a maintenance director/mechanic in Rio de Janeiro in late 1978. I took a two week holiday in Rio to get the lay of the land before starting up the contract in Jan 79. While in Rio I was invited to a New Year’s Eve party at the apartment of the woman that turned out to be my sister-in-law and I met the love of my life at that party. We started dating until I returned to the USA in January to ferry the helicopter from Louisiana to Rio de Janeiro. We kept dating and got married in April 1980. My wife is Brazilian. We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary in April this year. I speak, read and write English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and I speak Dutch. During my career we lived in Mexico for a year, then ten years in The Netherlands and we moved back to Rio in 2000. I retired in 2015. My wife speaks Spanish, Portuguese, French and some Dutch. People often ask me if my wife speaks English and I always answer “ I do not know, I never asked her”! The reason is that we have always spoken Portuguese. C’est la vie!

Firstly, congratulations on your anniversary. This has to be one of my favorite videos. Partly because it mirrors my own experiences in Spain and in Israel and partly because it shows the love and the genuine spark between you. Of course all couples have their private tensions but both of you look so ... en sintonía (I had to look that one up 😁). Not only do you clearly love each other, you both still look very much 'in love'. It's warming and inspiring in these troubled times. Oh and neither of you look old enough to have been together 14 years. Not fair! 😂😂 Ciao!

Awesome vid and so relatable for me! I'm an Argentine married to a kiwi, living in NZ for five years now after seven years of living together in Mexico. Met in Aus and by the time we moved back here my husband had spent 20 years abroad. It sounds kinda glammorous but it's actually been incredibly challenging for both! Language barriers, paperwork, visas, work permits, retraining, adjusting, isolation, starting from scratch again and again.. una mano atrás y la otra adelante. But.. it´s also fun as hell. 😂

Happy Anniversary! I will save watching this video for later with my wife. We have our 24th wedding anniversary on Monday! International Couple as well. (She Polish, me EEUU) who lived in Palma de Mallorca for the first 7 years of our relationship. The biggest drawbacks to our international relationship (long term, not the growing pains type) were giving up being so far from family and friends for so long, including my son growing up with little contact with cousins. We were lucky in that my wife has had very rewarding work life here, so it mitigated the sting of being away from her family. We are planning to move back to Europe to reconnect with loved ones when we can make it financially feasible.

I'm going to bookmark this for future reference, when I find myself a Spanish boyfriend hahahaha I'm in a second bachelor's program right now (Spanish for Heritage Speakers) and we've been studying Spanglish a lot, since it's the dominant language those of us Hispanic/Latino Americans grew up speaking. Your story is a beautiful example of how the Spanish and English combine, even just within one relationship!

I totally get you guys, my partner is from Australia and I'm Spanish. We met in London and even though we never had a language barrier there is something lost in translation every now and then due to lack of context. TV shows, history and common history... There was a funny moment when I told my partner that I no longer thought in Spanish and he confessed to me that it had never crossed his mind that I would think in Spanish, even though it's my mother tongue. He's trying to learn Spanish and he's very inquisitive about the country but there's always things that wouldn't cross your mind and that also goes for me about his Aussie roots. It's challenging but enriching, although the litmus test will come when we move from "neutral" territory to either Spain or Oz.

This was a really interesting episode. As an anglophone Canadian married to a francophone Canadian, I can really relate to what you were saying about missing shared history. Even though we both speak each other's mother tongue, the iconic features of our early lives are SO different -- cartoons, candy bars, nursery rhymes, holiday traditions, school systems, foods, books. And these differences seem to jump out and surprise us when we least expect them!

Cool video. My Spanish wife and I met in university in England 24 years ago when I was a mature student and she was completing her PhD . She spoke English and I spoke no Spanish and it's pathetic to admit but there's not been much change. Meeting my in-laws was and being left alone with them was maximum silent cringe. We were adults when we met and we've moved around a lot so the issue of friends wasn't a big deal. In the U.K you need to plan a meeting with old friends 6 months in advance anyway. Shared history was easy as my wife has a PhD in English literature and well versed in British and Irish culture. I've gone completely crazy about Spain and I've travelled all over the country and in that time (although my first visit was in 1982) and my knowledge of the history and politics is pretty epic if I say so myself. You have to throw yourself into it to get the most out of it. I know Brits in Spain that know nothing at all about the history or culture. I know Spaniards that aren't much better either for that matter. At the end of the day I think two is better than one. Falling in love and sharing a life with somebody from another country is an amazing thing to be embraced and enjoyed. In my case it's three cultures - Spain, Britain and Wales (a mystery to most people). By the way Yoli, my father was a politician, MP and Minister, in the U.K government. He was the least corrupt man you could ever know and devoted his life to his constituents and public service. They aren't all the same. WT

So hilarious to know someone AngloSaxon like you, James, adjusting to our Spanish culture/language. Am a Filipino (Philippines with very solid Spanish roots: from religion to food to language), when I met my Chilena girlfriend, I didn’t adjust much at all. By 2021, we’re planning to move there in España from here in Australia. Aussie culture is way much very different than Spanish. If one is just simply exploring life ans touring places, Aus is great! But in the long-term, Spain is clear-cut a winner. No doubt!

I really enjoy your channel and have watched quite a few episodes now. I majored in Spanish in college back in the dark ages and was fortunate to go on a semester program in Madrid (1972). I enjoyed your walking tour of Madrid because I never visited the Royal Palace or most of that neighborhood. This was a good episode, too. My youngest daughter is married to a man from Peru. He is tied to the US thru selfemployment. She spoke good Spanish before they met and is a fast language learner. Myself, I love the bilingual atmosphere when we visit them.

I've only ever watched the movie Grease in Spanish over and over as a kid. When I was a teenager I tried to watch it in English. Just wasn't the same. Funny the things that stick with you 😂

I’m moving to Spain in January and am very excited, yet nervous and a bit intimidated. I’ve been watching your videos to help me prepare. Thank you so much for this channel! It’s helping me a lot. And I think I’ll be doing the Rosetta Stone deal to help improve my terrible Spanglish!

Fascinating! I've been an Xpat most of my adult life, even lived in Spain a little while, and now southern Australia, from UK & USA... It is very interesting all you say about living in another person's world. I love Spain, especially Andalucia - I've not been beyond - and Flamenco! Yoly, it drives me nuts that I don't understand what the Cantaor (?) are saying, cheering, encouraging - is it always the same or varies on dance, mood & situation??? I'm subscribing as I'm fascinated to see where you take us next - gracias... Stay safe.. 👍🐾🦘🥂💃

👍Congrats on your anniversary. I know the feeling. I am American and my darling wife is Brazilian. We have lived in México (one year), The Netherlands (10 years) and I have spent a total of thirty years in Brazil and retired in Brazil. We have spent a lot of time in Spain as well. We were booked to travel from Rio to Miami to Paris and back to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. This was in early March 2019. We had to cancel everything when Covid put it all down the crapper. We have credits with the airlines and hotels. We will try in 2021.
