Synopsis_En:
"In Zuid-Scharwoude in the province of Noord-Holland, there is a special place: an island that invites you to go on adventure. This is the favorite place for teenage sisters Shanna (11) and Mirte (14). They make campfires, spot buzzards, fish, sail on a rowing boat and climb trees.
Mirte has Down syndrome and lives most of the time in her own fantasy-world, where Shanna can no longer find herself in. She is busy with other things such as astronomy, biology, inventions and her future.
A couple of years ago, Shanna was still ‘the little sister’ of Mirte, but now this feels out of
balance. Shanna has outgrown her older sister. Starting her teenage years, she is becoming more and more independent unlike her older sister, which Shanna finds difficult to accept.
In Our Island, we follow the process of Shanna, in which she surpasses her older sister in her abilities and distances herself by doing this. She has to accept that there is not much time left for them to simply ‘play’ together."
