There was a devastating fire that went through Jasper National park in Alberta Canada. Footage showed the difference between properties where the owners were able to keep sprinklers going and those across the street with no sprinklers. There was still damage but not nearly as bad as those without. Stay safe Robbie and Brent! 🇨🇦

Robbie, I suggest that you cut that dying lavender back an inch or two above the ground. It could flush back if roots have life in them. Laura cuts hers back every year so it avoids or reduces the woody stems that usually develop on lavender, which won’t put out new foliage. Since it’s a new plant you shouldn’t have to worry but be sure you don’t cut back to wood. You can throw it into a pot if you find a replacement while you’re waiting to see how it does. The butterfly bush can be solved the same way. Cut it back to the ground in the spring. No need to worry about cutting it too far. It will keep it size checked. You can do that every year or every other year depending on sizing. Just remember that they are slow to start in the spring so don’t panic ! 🙃 Hope this helps! You probably know most/all of this but I thought it might help others.

Like you Robbie, I too miss the cut flower garden. I think my favorite part about it was you taking the flowers to the retirement home, so that’s when I got my first glimpse of your generous heart. Now we get to see that with your grandma. Is the Park fire disturbing your air? We have one that’s fairly close to Bakersfield in the Kern Canyon. No containment yet.

We're ready when we're ready and not a moment sooner. 😉🐾❤️

I know that as Snow in Summer. Lovely garden especially considering the heat which in my experience challenges the plants and then the bugs move in. You can rejuvenate your butterfly bush with a hard cut back in the fall. Love the apple espaliers. I really want an aviary in the future. Yours is fabulous.

Donna here, I watch Jim Putnam on Horttube and I just watched a couple of his videos on butterfly bushes (because I just got some myself, never had them before). Robbie! What a complete tease! Watched to the very end, excitedly, to hear what was coming and then you didn't even give us a hint!!! I hate "to be continued"!!! The Gardens look beautiful! Especially your hydrangeas! Instead of pulling out the one butterfly bush, maybe give it a rejuvenation prune?? I planted a "dwarf " Buzz butterfly bush which grew so tall that I trimmed it into a multi trunk standard. It now looks beautiful and I was able to underplant with some white Shasta daisies.

Hi Robbie - your garden is looking so nice, I especially love the espaliars. It really shows all the love and attention you give. Regarding your hydrangeas, I have both kinds...I don't know their names but the one with the cone-shaped flowers is thriving in all-day full sun and I prune the bajeebers out of it. The other one I have is the Anniball-type hydrangea...it lives on the north-side of the building in mostly shade and I don't prune it all all, it too is thriving and has salad-plate size white flowers on it, it's just gorgeous. So, I think you have the cone-shaped hydrangea in the correct spot, it loves sun. But, the other one you showed with the round flowers that got burned, needs to go to a shadier spot. My daughter lives in Sacramento and she planted a ball-type hydrangea into a 1/2 wine barrel with wheels on it and it too is thriving on the north side with allot of shade. So, I guess the moral of the story is...sun for those that thrive in it, and shade for those that don't! 😊 I can't wait to see what's next for your garden, don't work too hard and thanks for sharing Robbie! BTW. I now live in Boise, ID, I'm native Californian from SF and Sacramento. Gardening in ID is a whole 'nother ball game!😅

Hey Robbie! 👋🏼 You’ve done a beautiful job with your gardens!! Regarding the petunias in your front window box as well as the one in the corner by your driveway, give them a haircut ✂️ and in about 2 weeks they’ll start pushing out more blooms and will look fuller for you. Always works when they start getting leggy. 👍🏼

Hi Robbie, your garden beds in the back yard look beautiful and have become so lush. Im in the same hot zone as you in Sonoma Co. I used to get spider mites and aphids in the past but since I started lightly spraying my plants in the AM, not so much. (BTW shower setting on water wand not mist) There are people who say keep the water off the foliage but in our dry climate its a different story. Your echinacea looks so vibrant and pretty, they definitely come across deep orange on KZbin. One of my favorite flowers that I didnt even know about until 3 yrs go!

Hi Robbie, questions about the mahogany hibiscus: It doesn't flower right? Is it deciduous or does it keep its foliage in the fall/winter? Does the foliage change colors for fall interest? Thanks for turning me onto this plant. I'm having a heck of a time finding it in my area though 😔. I'm in LA zone 10a. Do you think it will withstand full sun here?
@Eric.Mercado5 ай бұрын
Hi there. 👋 Mahogany splendor hibiscus is a gorgeous specimen! It's a perfect alternative for those of us who are unable to grow Japanese maples due to our heat. I'm in Phoenix, 9b, and it's an evergreen for me. It does flower as well. The flowers start to bloom from mid to late summer until frost. They are about 2-4" in size and have a deep burgundy/maroon-ish color. Like all hibiscus, they only last for one day, opening in the morning and falling off by evening. They are stunning in my opinion. There is no fall color, but it does hold its beautiful mahogany color consistently, whereas most other colored foliage options on the market tend to lose their color once the heat kicks in. Speaking of the market, I haven't seen this beauty available in my area either. Which is a bummer, so if you ever do see it, you better not hesitate or it'll be gone before you know it. 😂 The good news is that Mahogany splendor is very easy to grow from seed, so you might want to take that option rather than waiting for availability in the nurseries. I hope you don't mind me chiming in for Robbie. I figured he'd be a little busy. 😂 I hope this information is helpful. Good luck and happy gardening! 😉

@@Eric.Mercado thanks so much for the info, Eric. Do you have yours planted in full sun in your 9b zone? btw - i snatched the last one up at my local garden center!!! I have it in a pot right now but my plan is to transfer it to the front of my house once it's larger. It is a full afternoon sun spot/morning shade so a little nervous 😬; but that won't be for another season or two. Happy gardening 😀
