In this video I cover our first service for our Hyundai Kona electric car. I explain what was included and my thoughts about Hyundai’s servicing schedule compared to their diesel cars.
During the service the maps software was updated along with a firmware product enhancement; BMS & MCU & VCULDC & IGPM update high voltage battery. Read, stops it catching fire!
I take you through what is included in the first service and the Vehicle Health Check Report. I also show you how I wash my car prior to taking it for a service in 3 minutes!

What is the future for legacy ICE car manufacturers, how will they make the change to making and selling EVs in volume?
@lindsaycole8409
@lindsaycole8409 4 жыл бұрын
The manufactures still have expertise in suspension, interior design, exterior design and aerodynamics, worldwide regulatory requirements, manufacturing and assemble at scale. Electric drivetrain technology is well established and subcontractable. So that leaves the battery technology and management of that battery as the Key enabler of EVs and where the real R and D is. That is the magic technology and the center of what Tesla has in terms of IP and competitive advantage. It is what's wrong with the Nissan Leaf (no cooling so short battery life in hot climates) for example. VW seems to be OK with their tie into this company: www.reuters.com/article/us-quantumscape-m-a-kensington/vw-backed-u-s-battery-maker-quantumscape-to-go-public-at-3-3-billion-valuation-idUSKBN25U1JH . So the companies will live and die by access to the best battery technology.

Interestingly, I bought my Kona EV used and it comes with prepaid maintenance until the car reaches either 100,000 miles or 10 years from the in service date. I am sure this was factored into the price, but given the great deal I got, I can't complain. The maintenance schedule in the US is 15,000 mile intervals (except tire rotations at 5,000 miles). As for what car dealers should be doing, they should be installing massive numbers of quick charging stations. They should off the charging for free to their own customers for x number of years, say 3 years, then charge say $0.15 per kwh (USD) to their own customers. Offer those who bought the same brand from other dealers say $0.20 per kwh and those that have different brands $0.25. the exact amounts can and should vary, but should always remain profitable. Additionally, they should have comfortable waiting areas that have restrooms, some free snacks and water with maybe meals offered for purchase while you wait for charging to be done. Dealers should be encouraged to develop their own accessories, say coaster for the cup holders, branded phone charging cables, perhaps offering customers the chance to design their own decals for their vehicle and gave the dealer professionally apply them while the vehicle is charging. Offer car washes for a fee while charging. While of course showing off the newer EVs. Ultimately this will all require a massive redesign of dealerships and a shift in staffing, but can keep the dealer model profitable and relevant. And the beautiful part is many of these items are ultra high profit items that can be done while providing a service to the customer, meaning the more EVs they sell, the more money the dealerships will make.

@@cmwade77 Thanks Chris for your detailed reply. Good to hear you had the maintenance factored into the used vehicle price you paid and that you have a 15,000 mile interval. Makes more sense and I feel should be standard globally. No difference between USA and UK that I can see would constitute a third less mileage for service intervals. I love your ideas around dealerships. They have been slow to respond here in the UK, clinging on to the ICE business model and approach. Not many are looking forwards and being early adopters. Time will undoubtably take its tole on those that fail to adapt and innovate.

I have the Hyundai service plan for my Ioniq HEV. It was almost impossible to book it in over the phone. I ended up having to do it via the website. But the service process itself I found quite useful. I was also automatically rescheduled, and take your point about the AI elements of the website, but to be honest I found it fairly painless.

I guess my real beef with Hyundai, and many other incumbent manufactures, is they are applying the same scheduling / maintenance approach to EVs as their ICE models. They are very different technologies and require a different approach to maintenance schedules and frequency. They have shoehorned their EV range of cars into their exiting ICE processes and methodologies.

Fully agree. My Kona EV did not have the screen service due Notification set as new, so I just carried on driving up to about 16,500 miles. What I did get was a warning to update the satnav software so I called the Hyundai garage to ask them about it and while I was out saying when is the service due and they said 10,000 miles which I found rather shocking considering it’s electric what were they gonna check anyway got the car booked in, had everything done service was good from the garage. One of my past company cars was a Vauxhall signum that had a service interval of 30,000 miles which was incredible you could literally drive a car only have two maybe three services for the life of it that was a diesel car with a lot more that could go wrong then an electric car. You mentioned Tesla and they are light years ahead of any other car manufacturer in how they go about manufacturing and keeping their cars serviceable on the road, other car manufacturers have a lot to learn to catch up. In fact I don’t think they will catch up because they are so stuck in their ways with a reluctance not to promote the EV cars over the ice cars.

In my case (car delivered Feb. 2020) the recent product enhancement (called a recall by the dealer) included a check on and replacement of relays (I do not know which). I suspect that there was a batch of sub-standard relays and that relay failure may have been one of the factors in the fires.

Thank you for watching. Quality is a concern for many potential Tesla customers. Tesla doesn't use the standard Pre Delivery Inspection process that a traditional dealer network uses as they don't have a dealer network. This unfortunately means cars get delivered warts and all and the customer see them, whereas with other cars this is all sorted before the customer sees the car. This can give the impression that the quality of Tesla's is poor. I doubt it's any worse than any other manufacture.

Asked for quote on the advance service plan. £54.56 for #1, £171.82 for #2 and £57.22 for #3. Not sure if it's worth paying the service plan in advance at just over £11pm. @@johntisbury it was a very informative video. What do you think of the service plan option? Based on your costings doesn't seem worth paying in advance. Good point about trying to justify income for the dealer with the servicing intervals. Should be 2 years or 20K! Still in your 2019 Kona EV?

@johntisbury 3 жыл бұрын
@@fmulleady yes we still have the 2019 Kona EV, plus we have a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance model. You need some kind of servicing done so you don't void the warranty. It doesn't need to be a dealership product, but that's what I went with as at the time there was little other option available, being that EVs were still very unusual. I pay £10 per month for the service plan which I paid for the full 5 years worth. Only because I knew we were planning to keep the car for the longterm. I still think it's over priced for what 'needs' to be completed on the car. But you are between a rock and hard place, because not getting it done will void the warranty. Everyone will STILL want personal transport. Have you seen all the EMPTY buses , well they're empty where I live as NO ONE wants to go on them despite their subsidies etc. It's all changing and with Covid and an empty city of London, people are discovering what they can do without travel and all the hassle it entails. Thanks Dave, agree with your thoughts around lockdown and people's approach and attitude to what is now termed essential travel. Why travel to work at a desk 30 miles away when you can perform the same activity and output from your home. Whilst this won't work for everyone, lots of employees and employers are re-thinking their approach to the daily commute and the need for such a large business premise. Smaller, affordable EV's are starting to appear and will only increase in numbers, availability, and selection as more and more manufacturers start to embrace the change. Tesla 12 month review coming soon at end of September. It's a year old tomorrow on the 28th.

After eighteen months I still have yet to take my Kona in for a service although I had the BMS update when I had my winter tyres changed to summer ones in May, like many owners I could not see the need for a service. But when i have the tyres changed back again in October I am going to have the motor and the regen systems checked only because the sound the motor makes seems a little louder lately. I noticed they didn’t carry a check on this system in your service !?

This is true Victor they didn't tick the box for regenerative system check, although they did do a road test so this should have identified any issues like you are experiencing with increased noise. However, I don't have much faith that to date they have seen enough EVs through the service bay doors to highlight this as an issue.

I took my Kona Electric in for servicing too. I had the upgrade done for the battery. Now the car will not charge properly, the ev warning light comes on. I am now waiting for a new battery to be shipped from Korea. If this doesn't solve the problem Hyundai may need to give me a new car! I have no idea what went wrong and I am not certain that Hyundai does either. Car manufacturers would make more evs and likely help build better charging networks if they could sell them without caring about their dealers. The dealers are the ones who would lose money on repair services and are not prepared for the technology change. The manufacturers do not need to care about that profit center as long as they can build and sell cars profitably.

Most dealers say they don't make a lot on new car sales. Car Wow claim average saving of £2000. All dealerships look to make any money our of "likely" needed work. My local Kia and Hyundai car dealership charge £125 per hour labour. Tried to charge a family member £1500 for a new turbo on a diesel car when a local NON Hyundai garage did the same job with the same parts for £800 including an oil change. Hyundai garage part was over 200% more than local garage with same part code.

I dare say they would have mentioned if they were not working. But there’s no mention of the VESS or the HUD or the suspension or the wipers, (even though they mention the washer fluid). Guessing the short service intervals, is dealer appeasement. The servicing intervals appear to be every year, regardless of mileage driven. This is not unusual with an ICEd vehicle, as lots of short journeys are just as hard on the engine oil, plugs and filters, as less but longer journeys. But EVs don’t have engine oil & engine related filters, don’t have spark plugs or heater-plugs. Could be worse though. In Britain, the intervals are 10,000mi or 1yr., whichever comes first. I recently read that in Europe, the intervals are 15,000km or 1yr., whichever comes first. But 15,000km is just 9,375mi. So back to dealers making money, as the distance driven seem quite arbitrary. If 10,000mi were that important, then Europe’s service intervals would be 16,000km.

My understanding is 52% of all new car sales are company cars - due to the huge tax savings for companies and company car drivers it is reasonable to assume a great shift to electric over the next buying cycle as range issues diminish with improving battery capacities.. Market forces will drive this change and the Darwinian process of evolution will occur for main dealers, those that fail to evolve to this rapid change will fall by the wayside as the more lucrative ICE vehicle servicing and repair aspects of their business dwindle. I suspect multi franchise EV service and sales centres together with online selling direct from manufactures will become the norm.

My view on ICE cars is similar to yours. Manufacturers have spent billions on manufacturing facilities for producing ICE cars and all the associated components, they cannot simply ignore that investment and switch to EVs , they need to run their current manufacturing model as long as possible to get the return on their ICE investments. In my view that is one of the reasons for why EVs are expensive to buy. Yes manufacturers for compliance purposes will produce EVs but will want to encourage consumers to buy ICE cars for as long as possible. I would love to get an EV when my current cars ( which are a small hybrid and an Hyundai PHEV) come to the end of their leases in about 18 months time, but currently for the mileage I do ( which is not high so running costs are not the major expense), it doesn’t look comparing initial price v running costs I will better off with an EV. Now I am prepared to take a small hit on the initial cost for the “feel good” factor of running an EV but currently the gulf between the costs is too high. I can also understand why dealers don’t want to encourage sales of EVs either because as you say in the video to do so means they are basically turning money away. Be interesting to see which car makers continue in the years ahead on the assumption that ICE cars will be legislated away at some point in 2030s. I suspect many motor manufacturers will merge in the years ahead, car manufacturing will be concentrated at fewer plants ( I think it unlikely that the U.K. will have any volume manufacturers based here in 20 years time). Of course the even bigger change will come about when we have completely autonomous vehicles ( perhaps in as little as 10 years time for the introduction of such vehicles). Btw very much enjoy your postings particularly on your PV system, very useful for my own deliberations.

Thanks Peter, good thoughts. The secondhand EV market is slowly starting to bear fruit with first gen leases coming up for renewal. There's many a Nissan Leaf with no battery leasing. This will only ever be an improving position of the coming few years and then secondhand prices will start to fall. I can completely understand the position you are in at present around not being better off swapping to an EV on cost grounds. There is certainly a massive change about to evolve within the car industry, the next 5 years will see an epic shift in power and market share. Thanks for the kind words about my PV system postings, glad you find them useful.

Remember, too, that car makers have developed an extensive network of component manufacturers; they will be impacted as the market changes. Car makers and dealers know that a given ICE model will yield x dollars at the time of sale, as well as x dollars over the first few years of service, in both parts and labour. The EV cars may have a decent return at point of sale, but the service department is going to suffer in terms of parts and labour. Hence, I suspect, the service every 10,000 miles. (Gotta get 'em in somehow!) Presently, I drive a leased 2017 Corolla, with a year left on the lease. The Kona EV is more than twice the price of a new Corolla, but I'm keen to move to an EV. The Tesla 3 is about the same as the Kona EV Ultimate, but the Tesla Y is about $25K more than their 3. So the Kona EV will be the one I'll likely purchase. Currently, there's a 6 month wait for an ordered Kona EV.

@@dougfrith5001 Having both the Tesla Model 3 and the Kona I would recommend the Model 3 hands down, especially as the price is comparable. I think the dealer of my car might take a LEAF out of the Kona dealer's book. Charges are about double to treble your Kona costs. The appropriate acronym would be RO. Again, listing all the checks that are not carried out. I intend produce a printed list and get my trusted ex-neighbour's local garage to "service" my car in future according to my requirements. He doesn't sell any vehicles. I have the L..spy dongle which reports far more about the large battery than the dealer does. I would like a "researcher" to investigate the wording of warranty and other deals. I get "free" breakdown cover if I have car serviced by a dealer. It would not surprise me if these 7 year warranties have the same caveat. This is to get around the legalities of dealer servicing.
