My plan has to do with an enclosed trailer. I carry a 5lb propane tank inside the trailer right now and have always seen that as a problem. I bought a aluminum box for the tongue and plan on storing it in there. No battery or regulator on on the tank. It’s strictly for my bbq. Thinking of just drilling holes in the bottom for venting. LP gas drops so bottom holes should do the job in my senior citizen opinion. Well done video and clean job!!

This is the perfect mod for the LGM! I actually have a newer model with the diamond plate box but unfortunately its only a 3 sided box which allows lots of rain and snow to enter the box. Right now everything inside mine is covered in thick ice. Also being able to fit two propane tanks and 2 batteries is huge for boondockers. You should send this to Xtreme Outdoors...they might change their design. Excellent job!

As I said in the video, you must ventilate the box to avoid having a problem with the propane. I have the large vent on the back and several holes in the bottom of the box for both water drainage and venting of gas. We also keep a digital remote thermometer in the box to monitor the temp inside. We've had this in place for over a year with no issues and know many others who use a similar setup without issues. Anyone who has concerns should research and only proceed with what you are comfortable with.
@robertwolf61703 жыл бұрын
@@TurnerMaxAdventures Agreed. If you are careful and understand what you are doing you can improve upon the original design especially coming from the plastic cover. Vents and drain holes are better solutions than an entire open backside. The remote thermometer is another good idea for the batteries and if someone is concerned about gas build up then a detector can be added for that too. Do you guys have a solar setup to feed the 2 batteries? Did you pull the trigger on the lithium batteries?

Nice mod! I see lots of concern s about mixing propane and electrical. Here are my thoughts. 1) Your drain holes create a propane drain. 2) Your big vent in would likely dilute a propane leak, if there was one, to the point where the gas/air mixture would not explode. 3) You could always install a propane detector in the box.

BOTTOM LINE IS WHEN IM MOVING OR NOT USING IT THE PROPANE TANKS WILL BE SHUT OFF

Question, going from 1 full tank and 1 battery and original cover to your setup, what was the difference in tongue weight?
@TurnerMaxAdventures5 жыл бұрын
We have always had the 2 - 6 volt batteries so they aren't new for us but they are 65 lbs a piece. The box itself is 29 lbs but the plastic cover and steel supports was 25 so only a 4 lb increase there. I added a dual propane holder at 6 lbs and a second tank at 37 lbs. So my personal net increase was 47 lbs. We alre also swapping out to LITHIUM ion batteries so battery weight will cut in half. So I expect my net increase to be about 10 - 12 lbs total after that.

This looks great Chris - well done! Tell me, do you think that this craftsman box could hold 70lbs of weight on the cover? I have a generator and generator box that I'm looking to locate on the tongue of our LGMM trailer. I'd prefer to avoid the Stromberg Carlson tray solution that requires ditching the propane/batter shroud completely. Thanks in advance for your thoughts or advice.

I am preparing to do the same mod. I am considering mounting the box reversed to save the space for the lid to open. I am concerned the box will get in the way of my attachment for the weight distribution hitch. It's near impossible to measure how the new box will fit until the old is off and the new is sitting there. Thoughts on this approach?
@TurnerMaxAdventures Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out I considered installing the box reversed to open on the "back side" but the box I bought didn't have the diamond plate on the back, and I didn't like it that way. But you will be able to push it back a few inches doing it this way, which will leave you with more room for your WDH hardware. I don't have a WDH, so it wasn't a problem. Most of the ones I have seen attach around the tongue frame and stick up. I assume that's what you are concerned about.

great video but people are telling me that putting propane tanks together in a small box with batteries is crazy idea.!!!!! they say with one spark of battery the whole thing might explode. also looking online it says that if you get propane above 12o degrees in summer it might explode the bottles. its a metal box. wont it get hot inside in summer.? will your vent idea fix both these problems? if I google it it says if a propane leaks it leaks low............so if I make vent on back I want that vent to be low on box? I WANT TO DO SAME IDEA AS YOURS I HAVE A METAL BOX. AND IN BACK I PUT 2 BATTERYS IN A PLASTIC BATTERY BOX TOGETHER. A BIT DIFFERENT THAN YOUR IDEA AS THE BATTERYS WILL BE FURTHER ENCLOSED IN A BATTERY BOX. THEN ON OUTSIDE OF BATTERY BOX I PUT TWO SMALL 11 LB PROPANE TANKS THAT TUCK INTO METAL BOX JUST PERFECTLY . SO TIGHTLY I DONT PLAN ON SECURING THEM. TO KEEP IT SIMPLE I PLAN ON ONLY HOOKING UP ONE PROPANE TANK AND THE OTHER ONE I WILL HOOK UP MANUALLY SWITCHING OUT TANKS IF ONE GOES OUT. WILL I KILL MYSELF WITH THIS IDEA? PEOPLE SAY IM CRAZY . I APPRECIATE YOUR IDEA OF THE GRILL ON BACK. DOES RAIN STAY OUT OF YOUR CAMPER WITH THAT GRILL? IF MY BATTERYS ARE IN AN ADDITIONAL PLASTIC BATTERY BOX A LITTLE WATER INSIDE BIG METAL BOX WONT HURT I COULD HAVE A DRAIN HOLE.
@TurnerMaxAdventures3 жыл бұрын
As I said in the video, you must ventilate the box to avoid having a problem with the propane. I have the large vent on the back and several holes in the bottom of the box for both water drainage and venting of gas. I will sometimes get a small bit of water entry from the back vent during a rain shower, but it is very minimal and drains quickly. We also keep a digital remote thermometer to monitor the temp inside the box. We've had this in place for over a year with no issues and know many others who use a similar setup without issues.
