Yes! It looks like it was beautifully done, clean and modern. Last time we were in Madeira we stayed on the flat in Funchal (above La Vie) for a month and then a week in Calheta and a week in Machico. We ❤ Madeira and will be back again. I found an apartment in Canico, which is very close to Funchal. I was approved for an 8 year loan and have signed the purchase agreement. As you know, Funchal is too costly at this point. I go a great deal and have much more space than I expected. Sometimes we have to be flexible. Now I need to think of a name :)

We do have a car to get around, as we like to hike in the mountains and swim on the other side of the island and just tour around. Beautiful villa with ridiculous views! I am retiring in 2-3 years (with the military in Okinawa, love island living. I get mainland fever, never island fever :) onto my 50' sailboat and will be heading to Portugal to visit friends outside of Lisbon. I thought about basing out of Portugal for a few years, but did not really know much about Madeira. If there is long term dockage there, I could see retiring to Madeira, and even buying something like you have. I cannot believe the price with those views! Here in Okinawa, your home would be about $6-800K minimum. See you in a few. Well done!

Please look us up if you make it to Funchal in your sailboat 😉. We see SO many beautiful sailboats, yachts, and ships here from our terrace - I always have the binoculars out. As far as dockage, we see many boats docked in Funchal's excellent harbor, but also all around the island - for how long though, we can't say. We see many dry-docks and storage locations as well. Okinawa must be a very interesting posting - exotic and historic. We certainly do not foresee experiencing any so-called 'island-fever' here, there is SO much to do, and easy access to the mainland and the rest of Europe if desired. Great video, watched it a few times! My wife and I were in Portugal last summer 2021 on a one month vacation/scouting trip (we went up and down the country). We loved Madeira, such a beautiful place. Ultimately, we decided to make our future European home base in Lagos, Portugal (we are both huge golfers, so the Algarve gave us more options). We bought new construction that has a two year time build. So in 2024, it should be done. We will then retire early (middle 50's), and also live our second half of life. Look forward to more of your great videos and content.

@@thomashawker2883 Still a great question. We originally planned to start on mainland Portugal and rent for a year at a time, moving at the end of each year to somewhere different in Portugal. Then we "discovered" Madeira and decided to start here. After less than 6 months here, we realized, for so many reasons, that we wanted this to be our base and travel around from here. We knew we had to act soon if we had a chance of getting into the housing market here on Madeira. We have driven through mainland Portugal before in a motorhome, so were at least a little familiar with it, but had not checked out the Azores first. We have friends from UK now, who lived in Azores for a couple years - apparently not nearly as developed or lively, and quite rainy. We still want to visit & explore there, and all over Portugal. We are so glad that KZbin presented this video to us yesterday. My wife and I have subscribed and already watched nine of your videos. We'll get through them all pretty soon. We are targeting Portugal and want to buy and set up a launch pad too. We plan to head over for three months to the Iberian peninsula beginning in mid October 2022 to including a scouting trip for a place in Portugal. Wow, absolutely nailed it. Quality finish, and the views are stunning. I have been to Madeira 15 times since 2001 and really don't consider going anywhere else. I'm not in the position to retire to Madeira, my wife has MS, but Iyou both visit twice a year. BTW: I saw both of you in the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant on Saturday 8th October but you were deep in conversation with another couple and did not want to interrupt. Maybe a coffee in the future. Very interesting. I recently bought a house in Arco da Calheta and I'm retiring there early next year while I finish up some stuff here. Aside from being single, y'all have a very similar experience. It will be interesting to watch over the next few months to see if I can glean some insider information or cheat codes from you. I do want to watch your expat health insurance video. I want to see what kind of coverage you have. I'm curious why you went with Meo over Nos for home internet. Most people have told me Nos is fine for home internet but avoid them (in favor of Meo) for cell phones. I'll be in Madeira in early July to take care of some things with the house and get the internet connected. Have you considered scooters? I always see them around Funchal. I'll have a car but for local trips I'm thinking of getting a scooter. Parking isn't free for cars but it is for scooters. Thanks and I look forward to seeing if your house closing expenses track with my own experiences.

That's good to hear that you can relate to our experience - hopefully it will be at least a little helpful as you plan. As far as internet, while of course others will have their own preferences/loyalties, we talked to enough people who highly suggested Meo for Madeira (but not for mainland) and after researching it a bit, we decided to go with them. Reception has been great all over the island and their package for over 200 TV channels, Fibre 5G high-speed wi-fi, plus 10Gb of data for each of our cell phones, plus a home phone, was just incredible compared to what we were paying for EACH of these services alone back in N. America. Yes we love the idea of getting a scooter one day (or a motorcycle). There are tons of each to choose from here, many very stylish. A scooter would be an excellent idea. One day when it makes sense for us financially, we hope to do that. All the very best to you with your experiences & plans! Doug & Monique.
