Our Mission | 1st Combat Camera Squadron

The 1st Combat Camera Squadron (1CTCS) is a tenant unit at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. It is the only active duty Combat Camera (COMCAM) unit in the Air Force. The COMCAM mission to provide the President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Unified Combatant Commands, and the Air Force with a directed imagery capability in support of operations and planning requirements during worldwide crises, contingencies, exercises, and war. How would one go about trying to do this in the airforce ? How hard is availability ? I want to do this in photojournalism in the airforce but I’m worried that I won’t get the opportunity to try

For COMCAM you need to enlist as either 3N0X2 or 3N0X5 career fields (which are in the process of merging into 3N0X6). Any of these AFSC codes are eligible to apply for COMCAM assignments, so that is the first step. Your local Air Force recruiter should be able to understand those codes. After completion of basic training and technical school, you will be given your first assignment. You get to create a "dream sheet" of your preferred bases (which could include COMCAM at JB Charleston, SC), but understand it is prioritized by the Air Force needs at the end of the day so it is not guaranteed you'll get it first try. I've been in seven years as a broadcaster and am now at COMCAM, but I only tried applying for this specific location over the past two years. If this is a serious goal for you, it is more than possible as there are multiple opportunities to apply in the span of your enlistment (or career if you plan on staying in).
