Description:
Visit the Slaughter Pen Farm at Fredericksburg, Virginia with Medal of Honor recipient Britt Slabinski to explore the brotherhood among soldiers.
This video was created as part the Brothers In Valor project, in which the American Battlefield Trust brought modern recipients of the Medal of Honor to Civil War battlefields so they could walk in the footsteps of earlier recipients who fought in circumstances parallel to their own. These stories, and incredible first-hand accounts more modern military service, were captured in breathtaking video footage and in the pages of a special edition of the Trust's Hallowed Ground membership magazine. The Trust is deeply grateful for the invaluable assistance provided by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society during this project.

Gentlemen, I can understand why you would armchair quarterback this from the comfort of your homes, but consider the situation. First of all, he made the conscious decision to return to recover a fallen brother, knowing that he probably wasn’t coming back. Second, the fog of war... devastating fire erupting all around, at night, knee deep snow at high elevation with very little intel and multiple injured team members. Slab sees Chapman hit. Obviously a serious enough wound for him to BELIEVE that he was dead in the heat of the battle. SEALs pride themselves on not leaving brothers behind, but since he had to CARRY HIS WOUNDED TEAMMATE down the side of the mountain in deep snow without even being able to recover the body of Neil Roberts, the reason they went back in the first place, should make it apparent how devastating this situation was. And how do you think this makes Slab feel? Losing one of your men is one thing, but finding out that you unknowingly left someone behind will haunt him forever. If you think for a moment that this was done intentionally, you are deluding yourselves. And if you think that our country would award this medal without knowing with 100% certainty that it was deserved, then you don’t know what this medal is all about.

@@jamessiebert728 Chapman found that avenue to the enemy before the other guys and just monster-dicked it on impulse. Brit was the only one who made an attempt to stay near him, but overall it kinda looks like the seals just used Chapman as cannon fodder instead of capitalizing.

Thank you! My ancestor Sgt James Moore was wounded on that same field. Serving in Company K 136th Penna Volunteers, the battle raged on December 13, 1862 and he was shot through both legs. He lay on the field for two days until the Confederates took him captive and shipped him to Libby Prison in Richmond. He was soon paroled and made his way north to Annapolis Maryland where he recuperated over a period of 6 months in the Nave Hospital. He was discharged and returned home. On the 50th anniversary of the battle he wrote a detailed memoir of his experience.

@@OMEGATROPOLIS I deployed to Iraq for one year back in 2005 - 2006. I do not deserve the Medal of Honor. Please do some research on what warrants the award of a Medal of Honor before you comment. There are plenty of lesser awards that can be given for bravery (e.g. distinguished service medal, silver star, etc.), which is what I think Britt Slabinski should have been awarded.

@@josephc3249 I took your advice Joseph, and this is what it said were the Medal of Honor requirements: who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty: While engaged in action against an enemy of the United States; While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The mere fact that he made the call to go back in meets every requirement. His duty could have been to leave but he went outside his duty and made the call to go back in. I said every one deserves the MOH when they fight because there are always sacrifices made by each military member even if they do not risk their life, they may have risked something else like a relationship. Hence why i said Every deserves it.

I forgot to mention Britt Slabinski's MOH citation contains false information. It states: "Senior Chief Slabinski, without regard for his own life, charged directly toward the enemy strongpoint. He and a teammate fearlessly assaulted and cleared one enemy bunker at close range. The enemy then unleashed a murderous hail of machine gun fire from a second hardened position twenty meters away. Senior Chief Slabinski exposed himself to enemy fire on three sides, then moved forward to silence the second position." Watch the drone footage and you'll see he just followed MSG Chapman as he cleared Bunker 1. MSG Chapman was then shot while in Bunker 1 and no other enemy positions were overtaken after that.
@OMEGATROPOLIS
@OMEGATROPOLIS 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephc3249 it doesnt say a second bunker was overtaken in your description, you added that. it just said he moved to take it out or silence it. as for the first bunker by him shooting his weapon from behind Chapman fits the description of assaulted. So he did assualt the first bunker, and he did intend to assult or silence another bunker. THis means the description is not lying at all.

You’re right, that Medal of Honor on your neck belongs to John Chapman- the man who’s valor you tried to steal on that hillside in Afghanistan until the drone footage was released, showing HE was the one who stormed the bunkers and killed the enemy combatants as you and your team left him lie with 2 gut wounds. I still feel that if he was a part of your SEAL team, you guys would have fought for and rescued him rather than retreat. I’m not taking anything away from your service or the men on that hill, but stolen valor is stolen valor.

A truly moving testimonial to Mr. Slabiniski's stalwart adherence to immensely laudable convictions. Of course, these traits have been displayed by EVERY MoH recipient through the award's history. I have met 3 such gentlemen -- Ronald E. Ray, James Allen Taylor, and Harold A. Fritz -- who attended The University of Tampa after their military service, all in Vietnam. Their demeanor is exactly what we see in this video: "I was simply doing what I was trained to do." "I was just doing my job." And "The real heroes are the ones who didn't get to come home." A wonderful project by ABT to doubly preserve and connect personal military history with protection of the physical places of struggle. I salute everyone involved in this, and the greater, endeavor.

Realize that, yeah it is terrible to leave anyone behind but, sometimes it's what one has to do to save everyone else, If Chapman was still living at that time, on that mountain, 17 yrs. 5 days and 13 hrs ago. He probably would have wanted That outcome knowing that his team could not take him with them, He being part of the American Military most likely would have known, that giving his life could save the others with him on that mountain top, and he probably decided that he would give his life for those others fighting with him. Knowing Britt personally, He himself would most likely as well, give his life to save anyone in this country, regardless of the endangerment of his life, and his family loosing him, because it would be the honorable thing to do and a just thing to do, because one can be scared, and do it anyway.
