"Our Mother Died In Our Arms"|Brothers Narrate Tragedy Of Goa Medical College Which Led To 26 Deaths

26 people died in a single night at Goa Medical College due to lack of oxygen. Mojo Story's Nazia talks to 3 brothers who lost their mother in the Goa Medical College incident. They told Mojo Story that their mother was quite normal and suddenly the oxygen pressure dropped uniformly for all patients that night and the next morning they were declared dead. They also claimed that the doctors or nurses at the hospital don't even know how to use a ventilator. "We were pushed out of the hospital with the help of police", one of the brothers said. The three brothers also raised questions on the hospital administration and authorities and made serious allegations on the doctors and nurses who were treating their mother.

The explanation of these Brothers is definitely pointing out gross malpractice in this hospital. The protocols followed are very unsystematic and the injection is sounding a bit fishy...it seems as if they were not bothered to correlate the symptoms and match the administration of either drugs or oxygen in the appropriate manner. A Probe is definitely required. But As Usual we are a corrupt country, no one will try to learn from Mistakes or examples. Sadly the Boys feel helpless after fighting so hard to save their Mum. What kind of a reporter is this woman? Probing with ridiculous questions. And the cameraman at 10:38 focusing on the kid crying. You really need to have better and more empathetic people. Having said that, some of the stuff the kids are angry about (and I totally understand their anger) was normal protocol for COVID. It is a terrible disease - I say this as one who lost his father on May 15 (he was in the ICU for almost 3 weeks and on a ventilator for the last week).

The above incident just like many exposes the lack of communication between health officials and common people. The relatives need to be informed on a timely basis about every aspect of their patient. Minor details like what medication and why it is being given if explained .....I think it will help lower the mistrust . Easy to swiftly judge a situation, especially when it involves emotional and traumatic incidents like death of a mother. Its unbearable. As a doctor, and also as someone who lost 5 members of our family in the past two weeks to Covid, i would like to say that, yes the government was largely unprepared for the second wave of pandemic, and medical infrastructure of our country is the worst and most neglected. But the basic protocols of treatment which are being portrayed by these young loving brothers, like giving insulin to a nondiabetic, giving antibiotics to a patient on ventilator, doing violent CPR (which appears as if they are destroying the heart), Negative RTPCR report despite having Pneumonia, Diagnosing pneumonia without xray, doctors explaining possibility of death to family, are all practically possible, valid, legal and include no conspiracy. Many doctors have done these to their own family members, particularly in this pandemic. They are the treatment guidelines which happen in every i.c.u. But, the death which has occured due to Shortage of Oxygen is definitely a preventable death and the government is accountable for it. If the deaths occur due to shortage of beds, even then the government is responsible. Several Doctors and Nurses have died in this pandemic being in frontline. Before we abuse and rebuke them for every death, that"s happening around, we need to be broad minded and think how much the medical system and doctors and nurses are overburdened. Also covid pneumonia has high unpredictability of treatment outcomes, Unless the patient gets, personalised care and close professional observation, which unfortunately is not posssible in a crowded government hospital, that too amidst a medical mass emergency of pandemic. Thats our fate. I pray, God gives these brothers courage to take this pain.

Over-Generalisation of any issue to the entire Medical fraternity is not fair. Unethical practices happen everywhere unfortunately, as long as bad humans exist, and yes they exist. Because our profession deals with lives and health, its more stressed. Few doctors definitely wud be bad if they are bad humans and no one encourages that. Saying "Doctors kill patients intentionally and milk out money" at a time when we ourselves get infected saving lives, in the government hospitals and also infect our families being in Frontline, getting abused every now and then, affects our morale a little, but we do not have time to feel bad for it either. I am not siding with hospital staff, but there r lot of misunderstandings. It is possible to know that pneumonia has reached the lungs without x ray or scan. Dr can know it even by breathing pattern and by putting stethoscope on the chest & back. When the dr she may not survive, she really had a good intention to prepare u guys mentally It's not to break you, but to avoid shock. (U can clarify that if u got all reports, blood reports, x ray, etc from the hospital. U can request for it from hosp) Insulin is given to hospitalized patients of they are receiving steroids (she was on ventilator & so most likely on steroids) Steroids increase blood sugar in patients even if they r not Diabetic.. So insulin is given.

But there are lot of misunderstandings. It is possible to know that pneumonia has reached the lungs without x ray or scan. Dr can know it even by breathing pattern and by putting stethoscope on the chest & back. When the dr she may not survive, she really had a good intention to prepare u guys mentally It's not to break you, but to avoid shock. (U can clarify that if u got all reports, blood reports, x ray, etc from the hospital. U can request for it from hosp) Insulin is given to hospitalized patients of they are receiving steroids (she was on ventilator & so most likely on steroids) Steroids increase blood sugar in patients even if they r not Diabetic.. So insulin is given.

I am sorry for their loss. But the boys have no knowledge about the medications their mother was on. They're emotional and are thinking the medications as a torture. There will always be reaction to the drugs given. We can start medications for pneumonia based on symptoms if we can't wait for the reports to come. The oxymeters available now r cheap and not accurate And where should the cpr done??

Blame the cm for not enforcing a proper lockdown, blame Modi for allowing people to travel between states. And most importantly blame all the Indians who flocked to Goa to spend their lockdown/isolation period , without caring what happens to the local Goans. Just do a search for goa vlog on KZbin and you will see how many people travelled to Goa during the pandemic, this is what has caused the virus spread and wreak havoc in Goa.

How sad. Why is there so much incompetence , neglect, mismanagement , insensitivity in GMC. This is a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions. It made headlines here in the middle East. Who is accountable for this carnage? Legal action is the only way to stop this nonsense. The Goa govt should be taken to task.
