Our New Baby Alpaca is Struggling!

This baby reminds me of a baby donkey I had several years ago. The vet gave the foal colostrum and the jenny a shot of domperidone. He said the foal was just a bit early and the milk supply hadn’t fully come in. I bottle fed her for two weeks along with some extra colostrum the vet sent home with me. After two weeks, she would knock the bottle away and run for her mom. She is still with us 14 years later! Definitely bottle time in my book, you don’t want baby dehydrated. 🍼🍼🍼

Old NICU RN here. I thought - this baby is a bit premature, the humming sounds like respiratory distress, and the baby has low blood sugar. Praying for a positive outcome!

The initial mistake was not putting the newborn to feed. It might not have worked.

I've raised them for 20yrs. You have to get colostrum in them as soon as you can. You can buy or freeze colostrum to keep on hand. Every minute counts!! Don't worry about Lucy!!!

If Lucy is too stressed and not drinking enough water, she won’t be able to produce much milk, but Lucy’s mom calming her is truly the key here.

I agree. If Lucy’s mom could be brought up by the gate and tied there for a little bit at a time, it might calm Lucy down to where she can start producing milk for her baby and not be so distracted.

I'm a newb with a small herd of Alpacas and small Alpaca book library that I have read 2 times over. So I don't know much other than what I read. But each one of our books stresses that mom and crias should never be separated from the herd and should be left in the pasture unless there extenuating circumstances. There is a long list of reasons why. But, yeah I agree with you.

#SharonBolton you can't feed an Alpaca baby a bottle like you can a cow or donkey. They don't make the type of formula or milk feeding that Alpacas make naturally.

YOU NEED A LACTATION CONSULTANT for Lucy. If Lucy's biggest need is the security of being close to her mom, please make it happen. Lactation will be helped if she will be "least stressed". Give Lucy lots of water. Good feed. PRAYING FOR SUCCESS! From an RN who worked in Obstetrics for 15 years.

There's always a chance that baby could be a premie, when looking at its size. Could be a reason Lucy hasn't come into her milk.

I seriously wondered when I saw her birth video if she was ok. It looked like mom wanted nothing to do with her. She sounds so hungry. Time for DJ to start bottle feeding. I pray she makes it 😢❤️

I went through this with an alpaca birth 2 years ago. He was a tiny baby. I had to supplement bottle feed for about 2 or 3 weeks and then mom took over. Don't give up! They're resilient! Maybe put a buddy in the pen with them. BTW Rocky is a big 2 year old boy now!

I'm glad you intervened! It was heartbreaking watching her struggle to walk and to try to get milk from her mom. Praying Lucy begins producing sufficient milk and standing still long enough for the baby to get the nourishment she needs!

Through the entire video I was saying, “Feed that baby, Daniel!” Oh, this was stressful but so glad you included us. You didn’t show it, but I’m guessing you were stressed, too. It worries me that Lucy doesn’t seem to stand still for very long when the baby tries to nurse. Praying for all. Do keep us updated.

I like those names but I was also thinking Desiree because of Lucy and Desi, but also because it means desired and they did desire to have more Rufus babies and now this makes two of them. They could also just name her Desi since it would likely be a nickname too. I guess that’s an obvious choice to go with Lucy, but because if the meaning I thought it was cute. Praying she starts thriving quickly. It would be heartbreaking to lose a Rufus baby after the heartbreak of losing him, and believing he was sterile.Just as your name idea says, she is a miracle. You need a hand milker, colostrum, and a device for tubing babies. Don’t wait more than an hour or two they drink or get tubed

Clearly being this is Lucy’s first and the baby is so small which leads me to think it may have come early, Lucy doesn’t have the milk supply right now. That poor baby is crying nonstop….it’s hungry. Why they aren’t giving it a couple of bottles until her milk comes in surprises me. I know they didn’t realize that Lucy was pregnant but if you are going to let animals penned up together and breed, you’d think you’d have a few emergency supplies around like milk replacement just for this kind of thing. They probably would only need to bottle feed for a few days. Poor thing….it’s hungry.

@@karenblanck7726 Giving the baby substitute milk at this stage may discourage it from trying to nurse mom. He's getting good results from the extra collostrum (sp) and the vitamin B. Baby is getting stonger and able to work harder to nurse which should help mama produce more milk.

As she is quite a bit smaller could she be a bit premature. Glad you trusted your instincts and brought her and baby up to the shelter to keep the both safe. Like you said Lucy wasn’t really paying much attention to her being first time Mum must be strange for her too. Doing all you could to get her through her first day was captivating and so wanted her to make it. All that hard work laid off. Hope she is producing more milk and Lucy is letting her nurse more. Question: 1. Can you pen Lucys momma next to her pen? 2. Will the other new momma allow the new baby nurse if Lucy continues to neglect baby girl (foster the babygirl if need be) 3. Bottle feeding may be what babygirl needs. Lucy may not be ready for this. May think about that in the future when it comes to breeding. Yall are amazing with rhe babies. It is sad to watch that little one, but I am appreciative of being shown what you, Lucy and her baby are going through. Hopefully Lucy will begin to produce more milk and feed the baby.
