The Uzbek government says it is a victim of terrorism carried out by the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan - linked to al-Qaeda.

When i was there in 2000, it was pretty scary to go out of Tashkent. Tanks were ambushed in a mountains. Soldiers stood everywhere with full body armor and weapons. When me and my mom went mountain hiking by city of Angren all of the locals adviced us to stay away from there. Taliban and god knows what other scary militant groups were wondering around those mountains. No wonder Uzbekistan supported NATO invasion, it helped to drive out those scary islamist groups out of that region.

That is so refreshing to hear as fanaticism of any kind is awful. I love the music and culture of Uzbekistan and wish the people there all good things.

Islamic country means a country where the muslims are in the majority. Islamic state means a country where the state is islamic.

As an outsider looking in, there are things I don't understand. Do the majority of Uzbeks want an Islamic Republic and all that goes with it? If so, why? Wouldn't a genuine secular democracy be a lot better for everybody? I would be interested to get the opinion of Uzbeks as it will help me to understand the situation as it currently stands in Uzbekistan.

No, but karimow only defend his and his groups position, and say its because islamic extremism. This is no way to treat his countrymen, or anyone. So no, i dont whant taliban or groups like it to be in uzbekistan, but there is better way than this to do it.
