That’s going to be an awesome space. Maybe blue tape everything out on the floor to see the layout. And just move tape lines if it doesn’t work, before you lug equipment around.

Totally agree keep that middle area between the doors for the fab area it fits perfect between the 2 doors makes it easy to work in between the 2 and saves walking.

I worked in the Labs up at Lubrizol years back, and they had "H-Bench" workbenches, everything was accessible from 3 sides, you had 2 long surfaces to work from and the benches were far easier to organize and manage. A well designed workbench is a game changer.....

My shops over the years have always had space between the doors that had work tables and tool boxws between the doors, generally from front to back. My st shop had an area that was the chassis/weld table opposite the bay doors. Didn't have lifts, would love to have had one, just no budget for them. Love the new place and hope you get it how You want it to be useful!

Love this content. It's a car guy/girl vlog. Every guy that got/bought/built a shop has this same issue. Keep it up guys and I feel we all will be here for the ride. Also from building a shop for myself take into consideration tools that are big or awkward that don't get used much. Putting them further away to keep tools more used closer.

The small door in between the big doors is perfect. Put the metal fab in that space, so you'll have a direct escape route, first aid and fire extinguisher right there if anything happens. Then you'll need a clean space for engine assembly and another one for spaghetti incidents. You can put another fab area near the back door, to accommodate the assembly areas. The treasure storage needs to be completely separate for obvious reasons. Put the 4 post at the end and the 2 post in the middle. It's easier to get around them like that. Also this makes the middle hanger door for bigger jobs and the end door for basic maintenance/chassis tune, with the access to fab table. As you roll it in through the middle hanger door, you can choose between the lift or jack stands. There's also never enough table space. At least for every lift, there should be a table at the back wall. The metal fab in the middle can have nut and bolt storage at the wall next to belt sander etc, as the welding table is in the middle of the floor. Then you'll need an office space for opening and recycling packages. The "first" door in the near corner is perfect for that. Bigger loads can be pulled in through the middle hanger door, hand held items through the small door. Keeping the packing material away from any of the fab areas is a fire safety measure. A designated area needs fully lit table space for unpacking and quality inspection. Then there's the merch section with required logistics. Your newly acquired dance hall gets tiny and cramped faster than you'll realize. Oh, and most importantly, you need a space where you can sit comfortably, eat and look at it.

Was thinkin just like you said. Fab area in the middle, rollups on the ends. Can have the single one side, double other side and just relocate swing door. Bonus! Loft area above the fab area, then it's easy to close curtains when welding and cutting so you don't get debris on the cars.

I’m building a new shop. My fab area will be in the front of one lift away from the door. The other bay will have a lift with work bench and big tool chest for special tools in front of the second lift. I use a roll around tool cart with all my standard hand tools. Like a 5-7 drawer tool box on a cart that I can keep towels, carb clean, brake clean on the bottom of the cart. I roll the cart to what vehicle I’m working on. If I need a special tool I walk over to my big tool chest. I try and put any special tools I need on the cart before I head to the vehicle I’m working on. I’m doing two, 2 post lifts. I’m not a fan of the 4 post. You still have to Jack them up to work on suspension. I hate bending over to go under a 4 post lift every time I go underneath. My work bench is only like 8 feet with a vise. It’s a place to set on a stool and rebuild a carb or port a set of heads. My fab table is 4x8 steel with casters to roll it around. I can store it against the wall when not in use. I don’t have a tire machine. But I’m building a loft across the front of the shop for a place to store light parts on shelves. Gaskets, carbs, valve covers etc. With a big 8ft shop ceiling fan in the middle to keep air moving in the shop. I believe I will try a mini split to keep the temperature around 68 degrees in winter and 75 in the summers. I found the secret to a nice shop is keeping things put away when not in use. 🇺🇸🦅🏁

Having a set of tools, hardware that you use regularly and small/large workbench right next to the lift saves so much time. Also having the stuff that makes a huge mess or dust or soot in a separate area helps keep that shit out or off of the rides. I come from a large shop and thats kinda where we ended up after years of trial and error.

Chief heres some considerations to take into account or to look at carefully before installing lifts in this new place . first look at the height from the floor to the roof trusses next look at the depth of the floor slab the reason being if you go drilling into something that isnt thick the anchor bolts will not hold the lift . next look at if a cars on the lift with a hood open look at the height will it be high enough and not interfeer with the roof trusses i know this from experience i installed one in a bodyshop and we ended up having to move fire sprinklers out of the way . chief also building code will not allow plywood has covering on walls especially not around wielding areas it has to be 5/8s fire rated drywall also you need to leave at all times a 3 foot clearence around your electrical panel . chief your wielding tanks need to be stored in tank cages . chief if your thinking of putting in another over head door check and make sure the building structure was designed for that because sometimes there built for 2 doors . chief also 1 very important thing to take into account is whats your electrical entrance amprage because lifts use 220 volts each bigger maybe more then add on all your machining tools plus shop lights and stuff your shops electrical entrance and panel might be undersized for what you want to do you might need a 400amp entrance remember commerical buildings are powered much differently compared to res buildings and small wood shops .

in a body shop I worked in we installed elevated parts storage, hung off the side of our 2 poster, a simple arm and chain fall winch attached to a basket that ran on a track welded to the post, the basket size we used would support 500 lbs of parts and lifted them to about 6'10' off the ground kept the floor area clear, and later on we did the same deal on the wall where it didn't interfere with tool boxes ect.

I worked at a power company, for big trucks like dump trucks and class 8 trucks we had portable lifts that stored in the corner and you wheeled them up to each wheel (rated for 33,000 lbs.) Lift, work and push back to the storage corner, then you can have free range where you need the lift. Free's up work area and nothing permanent.

A couple of things: 1. You're going to want a well lit clean room for things like engine tear down/assembly. Normally these go in a corner & have a strong roof for storage 2 Some sort of storage racks for all your spares. These go against a wall that doesn't have windows. 3 I normally have bulk fasteners against a wall and a rolling rack for common use fasteners. That way I'm not running around for the common stuff & not tripping over ship to work Have fun!

I like your thinking guys. It makes sense to put the things you will use the most in between two lifts, that way they can be used by either lift and are close. Saving time by not going far for tools gives more time to work on them. No rush Chief and Jackie, take time and do it right!!! 🇺🇸☝❤🇺🇸💪

Just a thought. (From the road looking at the shop) In the left door you could do a 4 post(storage for 2 cars) and if the shop is deep enough you could push it back far enough that you could have a car on pro jacks between the lift and the door. In the middle between the doors could be your fab area and work benches and could angle 2 post in there accessible from the right door if you want. The right door you could do a 2 post pushed back so a car could sit in front of it and from what I can see you may have enough room for a car to the right of that and put the machines against the back wall or the corner closest to the house. The 2 post lifts take up less room and would make seem less cluttered in the main fab and work area of the shop. The 4 post end could be where you park what you’re not focusing on at the moment

Put your welders on nice portable carts. Add the outlets all across the shop for all the tools. Run 1 large compressor and add air lines across the walls and drop retractables where needed. All of your oxy and gas’s need to be on portable carts and make sure to have code approved storage areas for both! Lights on retractable systems are a good idea. And last but not least, why don’t you have over under car storage lifts? Put hitch points in the floor at different points to use as frame bending tie downs. Hydraulic jacks for everything that needs to get done! Gitrdone!

I also like the idea of, if you were outside looking at the front. Putting one lift in the door on the far left to drive straight in and on the lift. The garage door on the right I would put two lifts to the right of the door if there is room with the ceiling. Then you would have all the middle space to have flat floor space for jacking cars up on. Good luck you two😂☝

Happy holidays/new year. Enjoy the build. I loved every time I redid my woodworking shop. You already mentioned it, but "work flow" is the key to making it nice. And limiting the number of steps you have to take, on each task, is the best long term thing you can do. Also like you mentioned...keep moving shit around until it feels right. You only want to do it once. Hope you all have a great 2025. ✌️❤️

Supplies in the center? Hard core fab on one side, and finish side, tuning on the other side. Maybe lifts to the side, drive in and turn to get to a lift? that leaves a lot of open area for anything.
