Put C channel under the casters of the toolbox that is on the loft, it will keep it from sinking into the particle board / plywood and help spread out the weight. As a bonus you can put a strip of 1/8 material on the bottom of the front C channel so that it is slightly higher than the rear and the box drawers will drift shut.

@DirtLifestyle to tag behind this, coming from working in a cross draft prep booth, you're going in the right direction with the fan. I'd maybe even jump to another 2(3 in total) and place them top to bottom in that far corner. Put pre filters in front of the fans and when you go to clean up your grind room you can basically blow out towards the fans and they will catch a majority of debris/dust. Alot of pre filters are a plastic like mesh material time, and they'd last quite some time. Could even clean them out.

Nate, Awesome shop. Its really well thought out, and implemented. On your grinding room I have some advice that I learned in a stainless fab shop that had a grinding/polishing department. (1) double your exhaust fan CFM. Whatever CFM you plan on using double it. Its crazy how far griding dust will travel, and how far the "suction" of the moving air drops off away from the fan(s). (2) you will need to have a "spark arrestor" on the outlet of that fan. Sounds dumb, but stuff happens, and hot sparks get out. We made a large turn down that had a water pan in it, and a 3 " or so stub out past the pan. you can line the pan with a plastic paint/sheet rock pale from Lowes Home Depot, and put the water in that. (3) The curtain you use at the opening leave a gap at the top for air to flow into the room, tight at the bottom, and each side line the curtain with magnets. Then put some metal on the opening of the walls. Also weight the bottom of the curtain some how , so air cant get in from down there. This allows only air in from the top causing a positive pressure like effect in the room settling the dust to the floor. you do not want air in from the ground it kicks up the dust. (4) Dedicated shop vac with some water in the bottom of the inside, or a metal shop vac if you can find one. Hot stuff go in, fire come out lol. I have seen first hand someone (not me) suck up some hot metal after grinding, and the shop vac went a blaze, and melted. Also you can steel wool wrap the filter . Cheers from the Snoqualmie Valley !

Awesome Video: Banister Railing, I'd use metal posts (your a fabricator) and run coated dog leash cable (or something similar) horizontally, it looks great and gives it the open feel. The air compressor, wrap it with hot water tank blanket, move the air intake out side, slightly larger in OD than needed. Even better if you could run it up through the roof and put Briggs and Stratton metal air cleaner set on the end. Works great in any weather, slightly oil soaked, check once every 10 years ( do you really think it'll get dirty mine never did, plus oil keeps the bugs away). The grinding room, buy welding blankets and hang them, put your own eye-let holes in then and on hooks, you can use them on other jobs when not grinding. The Mobile Tool Room is the new catch phrase or MTR. I grew up on a farm and finding things was always a challenge, even in the best laid out machine repair sheds. Once a week clean out the building, crap builds up fast. PS long ago I was an Industrial and commercial tool Mechanic. Keep your tools cleaned and oiled when possible. Cheers to you Nate.

Best to dry the air with an after cooler after the compressor pump before the air goes into the tank. The air is so hot after the pump (400 F on my 2 stage compressor) that cooling it will get so much water to condensate. I run a transmission cooler as an after cooler on the compressor fan with 2 self draining water traps which keeps my compressed air dry enough where I get no water in my drip legs and almost none in the air tank. I have to say, the shop is coming together nicely. Having the space to get organized looked to have helped a lot.

Rubber fatigue mats in front of the work stations, hose reel at front of shop so you can air up out front, maybe water reel too for radiator fills. Also maybe a mop sink somewhere if it makes sense and supply and waste is nearby. Just a few ideas for you, shop looks great!
@bc30cal995 ай бұрын
Regarding air lines Nate, if you run the air lines in a big loop all around the shop it makes for more even cfm and pressure distribution for all stations. In really big buildings we'd run a cross line every 50' if possible which again helps even out the pressure and cfm flow. If you've got areas far from the compressor which require a fair bit of air, placing an air tank near that station helps, even a smaller one. You can use a high pressure radiator and fan as a dryer. We had an Air Tek that was just that, looked like an air conditioning rad from a semi or large ag tractor, with a fan blowing across it to cool the air. Dryers are a must even in the semi-desert where we are. Lastly, mount the compressor on wooden beams instead of onto the concrete floor as that'll quiet it down a wee bit as well. Hope that made sense and helps you or someone out there.

New shop looks great! Our shop has 2 operational compressors, but all of the dead compressors are plumbed together for extra storage. The 2 working compressors have their intake filters hard piped to the outside of the building so the draw fresh air instead of shop air. This also helps reduce the compressor noise when running. All tanks have shutoffs and bottom tank drains. Hope this helps.

A great hack to increase your compressed air capacity is to keep your eye out for a curb alert or "free stuff" compressor with a blown motor. I was given a 26-gallon Kobalt with a busted piston. I trashed the motor, found an out of the way place in the shop and piped it in. Slapped a shut-off and gauge on it and just like that doubled my capacity. This also saves the working motor by reducing the amount of cycling. Thanks for the tour!

You may want to put an upper and lower louver in what I think is the exterior wall in your "compressor room" to prevent heat build-up. Also... Just build a serpentine tupe radiator out of 1/2" copper pipe (10'-20' of pipe) and then a drip leg. That will cool the outgoing air from the compressor right there at the source and get rid of a bunch of the water. Then the final cooling through all that distribution network will condense out the rest as you have already seen at your existing drip legs. I'm VERY envious of your wonderful shop. Great job.

Find yourself a wire cable length counter as it'll make your life easier & be sure to have an inlet for fresh air to be drawn into your compressor room for both fresh air and to keep it cool during extended run times. A drier solution is a looped series of copper pipe soldered together & mounted on a wall near the outlet of the compressor with a 1/4 turn ball valve at the bottom of each loop and add an auto drain to the bottom of the compressor with a catch can so you don't have to manually reach under it to drain it and then have to mop up the mess it makes. If you don't plan on painting with the air, then no oil/water separator is needed. Cheers!

Very nice setup there! Quite envious! Might be an idea to move the compressor - partly because they get HOT, and you've used a LOT of insulation, which means it's going to get even hotter! Then you have a lot of paint in plastic tubing, both of which will go up like torches if there's a fire from a grossly overheated compressor motor - and that'll burn the whole place down. On that, I'd strongly suggest having a reliable fire suppression system - a simple water shower system would be an excellent start - lumbed into the building, with some CO2 and foam hand extinguishers strategically placed. Maybe one of the specialised ones for magnesium, too, if you work with that material.

Wow, that shop is amazing, and came together fast. Your work ethic has been rewarded again. My shop is small, so I can have my tools in a big long toolbox and still have common-use things close by. For my size shop it is literally 3 steps or less. But with a big shop, it is handy to have a small roll-around cart that has sockets, wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers as well as a few power heads. Common use stuff in a 1.5 foot x 2.5 foot cart with great wheels. Harbor Freight has them, as do most other suppliers. I like the "camera ready" lighting in the shop. Not parking future projects, tractors, etc., in your shop makes it three times as big. However, you might find the forklift lives in the big shop because it is so useful. There is so much grinding and cut-off wheel stuff that happens right at a project, that I'm wondering if the grinding area will get much use. Maybe it is only for axles. I'd need a dedicated welding area, with a thick top welding table, vise, etc. And, one welder and plasma cutter needs to be on a cart with a long 220V cable for use at a project. I'm also wondering what the plan is for extension cords and air hoses that are used in the middle of the shop on projects. I prefer overhead, to keep the floor clear for things that roll.

I’m 55, disabled due to MS, and now am in full time ministry. I have always worked in construction, but now have the time to try and learn how to weld and fabricate. You put things in such an everyman, easy to understand way, that it has inspired me to branch out and learn something new. I’ve got a small welder, and I’m going to take a hobbyist welding course at the local tech school later this year, due in part to being subscribed to your channel. My goal is to replace the rusted outer rockers on my ‘01 Suburban 2500 4wd and build my own bumpers for it. Thanks for the videos and inspiration, man. It’s great to see a good guy winning, and getting his whole family in on the win. I’m looking forward to the finished shop and see what you come up with next! God Bless brother!

Nate that is one amazing shop you put together. Call me jealous but I am excited to see the new working on truck videos, I think I can speak for us all in I have been missing those since you bought the new place and have been moving in. Excited to see you get back to it, I certainly have learned a lot from you.

Nate, that is already a badass shop! I know I feel more productive when I have a space I feel good about. I can't wait to see what this shop helps you create.

For the grinding room, could build a Speed Door for it. Essentially, just need a electric motor (wheel chair motor should do it), heavy plastic sheet, a roller and some C-channel on each side of the door. Walk in, hit a button, down comes the clear curtain. When done, hit a button and up goes the curtain. I'm slowly working on a design for one to go on a drive-in paint booth/finishing room for my garagemahal whenever I get to finally build it.

Thank you so much for doing this vid... I have a 40'x60' and it drives my wife crazy at all the chaos.... I will have to set aside a few weekends to organize the shop now...

Once upon a time i had a 22'x44' garage. To keep heating costs/time down, keep car storage end cleaner i split the length in two parts, pretty much at the halfway point. I hung two heavy canvas tarps, one on either side of a ceiling truss. Joined the bottoms of them by screwing them into a 1x4. They went from one side wall to the other minus 4' on one side. Here I made a false, hinged wall, 4' wide with a man door in it. I alsomadded pulleys and ropes to the canvas tarps to make roman blinds tied into a worm gear winch mounted on one wall. Remove the crank handle and welded on a nut. So with an impact and socket i coukd raise/lower the partion to separate or join the two halves, and swing the false 4'wall against the side wall of the garage. It worked great, made a huge difference in heating and kept the one end clean while i machined, welded and ground metal in the other end.

Love the shop hacks, my old brother ran my intake from the air compressor outside, helps with noise, and pumps cool fresh air into the air compressor. And put hose, and ballvavle at the bottom so you and empty it daily.

E-track on horizontal beams to give yourself flexible places to hang things, hoist, etc. I did it in my garage and it's been a game changer. Very cool shop. Congratulations on all the good stuff happening and that you're doing. 🍻

Electric cord reels. Great to move tools and workstations around. If you move workstations a lot, put a cord reel on the station with a make plug on the end.

I recommend an auto drain for your air tank, its amazing how much water will collect in the bottom of the tank and will eventually rust it out. I have one that purges every few hours and is plumbed to dump outside.

I like the initial layout video. Really like the use of dedicated spaces, wiring, grinding, tool room and hardware. Also thanks for some tips to do with the air compressor.

(Railing) I did 1/8 cable around our wrap around porch. I ordered a swage Lag Screw kit off Amazon. Super easy install, clean look, and safe. That shop looks amazing, Nate. I'm happy for you all.

I work in a custom Jeep shop. I have worked in multiple…and your shop is better than all of them haha minus the fact that we have multiple lifts and an alignment rack. Beautiful work 👍🏼

Bought mine a little over a year ago, big game changer and smaller tables are pretty affordable. Went with the crossfire pro.

@DirtLifestyle, Nate, NICE set-up. Shop looks professional, and the lighting (kelvin-wise) is spot-on (from how it looks in video.) 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 I was just thinking this morning: *_'haven't seen a video from Dirt Lifestyle, in a while.'_* FYI, some L.E.D. flat panels on the walls would cut down on shadows and work as fill lights. Just a suggestion.

I live how the shop is turning out. With all those brackets and link ends, it looks like you can literally build a 4 link rig right there in your shop!

Shop looks absolutely badass! It’s not just about having a large space, but being smart with the space you have. Definitely seems like you’ve thought heavily about a lot of areas in that shop and utilized the space as effectively as you could. I look forward to seeing more!

that icon job box setup is crazy so much tool storage and it looks like something you would get from matco and snap-on. that upper deck is nice but id for sure fall off the end with no railing .
